Moore to script "The Thing" remake
12:00 AM, 17-NOVEMBER-06
Moore To Script Thing Remake Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures will remake John Carpenter's SF horror movie The Thing, with Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore writing the script, Variety reported. The 1982 original dealt with a shapeshifting creature from outer space that terrorizes researchers at an Antarctic station. That film in turn was a remake of the 1951 classic SF movie The Thing From Another World, which was adapted from the 1938 short story "Who Goes There?" by legendary SF author John W. Campbell Jr. Strike partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, and the company will co-finance the remake, to which Universal owned the rights. David Foster, who produced the 1982 film, will executive-produce. The producers said they consider the new film to be more "a companion piece" to the Carpenter film than a note-for-note remake. |
'a companion piece"...wonder what that means...prequel maybe?

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if this remake shows what happened with that group. The end could show footage from the original where Kurt Russell's group is headed there to check out the scene. |
Why is this movie being remade, again, and again, and again?
|
Just no originality out there...but plenty of greed.

You want originality? Go see Independant films in the theater. If Original ideas start making more money, you'll see more of them brough to the screen. And those of you who "don't go to the theater" (like I keep reading) have no room to bitch about what Hollywood does. The only way to make Hollywood listen is to pay to see what you like. |

The easy version:
"Oh, they're remaking The Thing??!? Piss and moan. Bitch and whine. Bitch and whine some more. I'm still going to watch it anyway.;) |
So Moore is doing the new Black Christmas AND Thing? Wow... prepare to be scrutinized Ron.
|
Bah! The new CGI Thing will look really kool.
:D |

Moore =Black Christmas and the Thing remakes...maybe Moore could tie them together....you know, the whole North Pole thing and all...send the Thing out in a sleigh or something...now there's some originality!!! |
haha, thatd be hilarious. id pay money to see the thing riding around in a sleigh.

I could see why Carpenter remade it, but I don't know about remaking the Carpenter version. The question when a person wants to do a remake is "what can you contribute?", in this case there's really not much. I don't think imposing a more modern viewpoint would make the movie novel, nor would special effects innovations, money or the modern talent pool. It might still be worth seeing. And I definitely agree with Roderick regarding viewing independent horror films. A ticket at a multiplex is ten bucks. A ticket to your local arthouse is usually around 5 or 6. Two people get to see a film which is getting limited exposure in a theatre environment for about the price of a single movie ticket. Plus, removing the temptation of three dollar Skittles (as some arthouses do) prevents another instance of price gouging. Everybody's money is precious, but spending it on a good date or contributing a little bit to somebody who might not get the money and exposure otherwise is worth it. It might make the Lion's Gate Rubberstamp-O-Tron 3000 get some better taste and give discriminating exposure to intelligent indie directors.

Raise awareness Rod!!!
I live in the sticks, with the nearest city an hour away, so it's hard. So many great films come, and I'm just stuck due to time and shit like that. However, if someone would resurrect their trailer thread on the General Forum ;) then I think a lot more people would take notice. |
i want to see what they can do without any CGI. see if they can get even close to the brilliant FX of Carpenter's.
