Being a Horror movie fanatic
Quoted from urge in the Six obscure movies thread:

First question is, what do you consider to be a horror movie fanatic? Second question, do you consider yourself in that 1-5%? |
ive got a movie buying disease. ive gotten over 50 dvds in the past two months, everytime i pass a movie i want, i fucking buy it, and i cant stop. someone help me. this is an unhealthy obsession
|
That does sound obsessive, and probably a bad thing if you don't really have the money.
I know a guy who has just thousands upon thousands. He has millions more than he could ever possibly watch. I keep wanting to say, "Hey, could I have eighty of ninety of your videos?" but I have a feeling he would be upset by the idea. |

If youīd ask me that question 1-2 years ago i whould without a doubt have answered 5%.
But now i donīt know anymore... Canīt seem to find time or concentration to see anything else than horror movies and a few selected comedys. Guess iīm just a hardcore horror-fan now. |
I'm not sure if I would fall into that category or not... I truly love film and spend a great deal of time watching movies, more often than not foreign language films. However, I rarely if ever actually buy movies. My true passion is collecting books, so Netflix is definitely my friend.

I suggest you switch to a cheaper format and buy used over the net...like if you go to half.com and get set up, you can find used VHS copies of things for just a buck or two. Don't try to destroy your movie obsession--tailor it to fit your budget instead.
Also, AVOID ALL CURRENT MOVIES because most of them suck. That'll get you away from the expensive new releases. You don't need to watch special features about movies made by assholes. Cultivate an interest in old films nobody likes or wants. They're cheaper, generally. |
well ocme to think of it im specifically a horror movie fanatic, i only buy action movies every once and a while, however i have been expanding on the horror sub-genre that i watch lately. ive slowed down a little bit of the foriegn trash films and started watching classic higher budget films that i havnt seen before, the thing, the fog, pet semetary ect.

my passions of literature/film/music are equal in my heart. external forces determine what i get to spend my actual time doing and movies seems to win out - as i only need 90 minutes usually - i can do other things while watching, my family can watch with me, etc. when you have a family - book reading time tends to be anti social... and music - christ - i cant remember the last time i just listened to music. just in the car or at work these days .. but i love all 3 equally. because i also play a couple of competative sports, have a lot of work to do on the house, have a kid who's in a few sports, etc ... i have more interests than 10 of any other people i know in my life combined. still .. i'm amazed at j.q. public without passions for anything .. hardly anyone reads, cares about music, or really explores film at my age .. all they give a shit about is saving for a boat or snowmobile .. it really sets me apart from most people i know in suburbia. downtown where culture and art still mean something - i fit in just fine. |

hell no - i hate that extreme stuff .. (i downloaded that particular movie as a VCD years ago and thankfully heard about it before i watched it - thank god) i will say though that it certainly does dictate what i do watch.. i've been killing myself to find things that are kid safe but still interest/amuse the adults .. and holy shit - its getting harder every time we sit down. and i've made some big mistakes - things i've forgotten about .. language..etc. anyone remember the VERY last scene of They Live ? kid friendly until the last 15 seconds .. then .. oops |

Canīt say that i do. What happens? |

I'm absolutely a film fanatic, all genres from silent to DV. And a horror movie fanatic! Ity is my favorite genre followed closely by crime films and samurai flicks.
And at least 75% of everyone I know feels the same way. Friends, family, coworkers they all love film & music & literature. |

must be nice .. i live in a culturally devoid bedroom community and i only know one guy at work who digs movies the way i do .. hard to watch a movie when you're doing 360's on a snowmobile at 60mph |

where the fuck do you live, the yukon? I buy shit loads of horror and b movies. I have a decent amount of action, comedy and drama but I rarely buy them anymore. |

no - just outside of toronto ... but i'm not a kid anymore .. its not where you live its how far along in life you are and you dont see a lot of 'horror guys' in the corporate world. if i was in highschool or working in a record store in the mall i'd probably meet all kinds of people who just watch movies ... living in the basement of their parents house. |

not a good move for me ... i hate winter more than anything else ... being around blades all the time would be a constant source of temptation. |
My obsession with horror movies started when I was 15-16. I used to buy any good horror movie on VHS tapes those days (Alien, Aliens, Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead etc.) Gradually it shifted to DVDs and looking at the racks right now, I must say I ve shifted a lot towards horror than any other genre.
I used to love Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Jack Nicholson, Gregory Peck, Disney's comedies, touchy romances, Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, out and out action flicks, space science-fiction etc. but of late all of their movies sit idly in the rack waiting for a spin, while I keep picking the horror movie DVDs and watch em. I go out to purchase new DVDs, and almost usually 75-80% of those turn out to be horror...with an occasional Scorcese or Tarantino thrown in. For example, I went to the mart last weekend specifically to look for Apocalypse Now...a movie I ve longed to own on DVD...and came back with a handful of horror movies instead... Even if a particular horror movie sucks...it ends up in my bought list... Right now many classic or very popular movies are missing in my collection...but if you look for sucky horror movies...you ll inevitably find it there... I m a fanatic I guess...:( |
you live in the UK the sun doesnt even come up out there. The two english dudes i had the pleasure to work with said its the dreariest place in the world weather wise. Pretty sure I live in vancouver and we've had about 7 days of rain since april, and that's a complaint from me.

I was obsessed with Godzilla, King Kong and Creature from the Black Lagoon when I was around 5. I also loved the Disney cartoon "Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
I've always had a huge monster obsession. Even though my favorite movie of all time isn't a monster movie, the good majority of my top 20 are. Especially werewolves. |
I like horror toys also, not the expensive ones most of the time, but the cheesy dumb looking ones.
I bought a weird little green Frankenstein wiggly toy yesterday you shake it and it goes BOOIIIIIINNNG, wobble wobble wobble it's like the truffle shuffle. |

I'm not a fanatic about anything, i dont have the energy or concentration necessary. However, horror is about my favorite genre, followed closely by sci-fi and fantasy. Yep, good ol' well rounded nerd here. |
