The Wolverine and Magneto thread
Now that X3: The Last Stand has gone on to become one of summer's biggest blockbusters, plus its getting released on DVD very very soon, the next in Marvel's X-men connection series is the highly waited and much anticipated "Wolverine", due to be released sometime in 2008.
This will be Wolverine's solo movie, where they trace out his origins and how he became Wolverine in the end. The first two X-Men movies only hinted at Wolverine's hidden past. As ensemble movies they could only use his story as backdrop. But it is assumed that the Wolverine movie will flesh out Logan's secret history and his participation in Canada's super soldier experiments. In the desperate search for his lost memory, he will travel from the wilds of the Canadian wilderness to the teeming cities of Japan and beyond. Script writer David Benioff has already submitted a script which has been approved, and filming will begin in 2007. Hugh Jackman has stated that he liked Benioff’s script so much that he tried to convince Fox to make the Wolverine movie even before X-Men 3, but Fox wanted to complete the trilogy first. Latest news on that front is that Benioff is working on the third draft of the screenplay of the movie. Brett Ratner is reportedly in negotiations with Fox to direct the movie. Hugh Jackman is very excited about this movie, as he is both acting and producing it. "For me as an actor, it's an amazing part," Jackman said. "I think Wolverine, in, not just the comic-book genre, but any kind of action movie, is one of the great parts. I love playing him, and it's a challenge." Look for the film to deal with Wolverine's past and include Stryker and Sabretooth as the main villians, newer characters like John Wraith, the Blob and Forearm as Weapon X operatives, and Juggernaut, Silver Fox and Beak as supporting characters. Jackman stressed that Wolverine is not a substitute for X-Men 4: "I want to make a piece that's in every way -- stylistically and character-wise -- that's different, that shows new stuff," Jackman said. |

I love the X Men and I think offshoots are great, but Halle Berry can eat shit and die for all I care. It's called X-Men, Not Storm and Company.

The cast of characters looks pretty good. Although, I was really hoping for either Omega Red or Cyber.

Personally I as I probably said several times on the other thread, all of the X-Men movies were titled falsely, they should have been titled, "WOLVERINE and friends" because lets be honest all 3 movies especially 1 & 2 focused mostly if totaly on Logan. I mean what ever happened to the concept of the X-Men being a team? So far the only good team movie I've seen was Fantastic Four, it may have been a crapy movie overall but atleast the idea of the characters working as a team, as a family was there. So I say we don't need any other "spin-offs" just do another actual X-Men movie so that we can see Gambit b/c the fans have been screaming to see Gambit from day 1! |

Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who will later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately signs up and goes through the mutant Weapon X program. As of October 15, 2006, the script is finished, and Hugh Jackman indicates there will be a year before shooting. He has denied rumours that it will be based on Chris Claremont's and Frank Miller's Wolverine limited series. “We've now signed off on the script. If you know about the history of the X-Men movies, that's a revolution for us. We're a year away from shooting the film and we have the script," Jackman said. Finally, while the story is definitely a prequel, it won’t be using the elements of the Japanese tale that recent comics have focused on after Logan’s origin story. “At present, no. Gavin Hood, the South African director of the acclaimed "Tsotsi" has just landed himself the plum job of the first "X-Men" spin-off film, "Wolverine", with Hugh Jackman set to again star as the near-indestructible mutant.
Hugh will return to the role after completing work on "Australia", which he is currently filming with Nicole Kidman - Production is scheduled to begin in November, with an eye for a Summer 2008 release. Hugh Jackman, who will reprise his role as the feral mutant Logan in Fox's forthcoming X-Men spinoff Wolverine, recently dropped a few hints about what fans can expect to see in the Gavin Hood-directed movie.
The project is a prequel that reportedly details Logan's back-story in the Weapon X program, and his first encounter with Sabretooth. Logan is also expected to have a new love interest. In an interview with WizardUniverse.com, Jackman downplayed the notion that Logan's past adventures in Japan might also be a part of the film. "[The Japan connection] is still something we really want to do," Jackman said. "What we need to do is establish who he is and find out how he became Wolverine. And by the end of the movie, I want it to be that you definitely knew who this guy was, like Mad Max and Dirty Harry. He's a good guy, but he's not a nice guy. He's just the guy you want on your side." WizardUniverse's sources indicated the film would see Logan in Vietnam and might include cameos by comic book characters such as John Wraith, better known as the mutant teleporter Kestrel, and Fred J. looking forward to magneto and wolverine. Although, this may get me som bashing, i have never really liked wolverine. I was always a gambit or beast person. I was told they were hoping for 2 more x-men (and apparently, on a different topic, Shrek 4 and 5 are planned. They're good but how much more of it can they pull off. Havent seen it but I'v been told Shrek the 3rd wasn't that good.)

September 7, 2007 - Alleged story details for the David Goyer-directed Magneto spin-off film have emerged online. The Fox-Marvel production will recount how young Holocaust survivor Erik Lehnsherr transformed into the villainous Magneto.
ObsessedWithFilm.com claims that Magneto "is book-ended with two scenes in Poland at the 60th Anniversary of the Auschwitz Liberation. These events take place within the timeframe of the first three X-films and will reunite Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen." The gist of the plot concerns Erik's quest to avenge himself by tracking down the Nazi war criminals he suffered under as a youth. This journey takes him to the Ukraine, France, Argentina and Israel, the latter location serving as the setting for the first meeting between the future Magneto and a young Charles Xavier. Likewise, a scooper for Collider.com, who claims to have read Sheldon Turner's script for Magneto, confirmed all the above information, adding that, "Fans will appreciate this early friendship developed between Erik and Charles, long before they adopt their monikers of Magneto and Professor X." |

You can unpack your suitcase Mr Cox – that’d be Brian Cox, who played the character William Stryker in “X-Men 2” – you’re no longer required for “X-Men” prequel, “Wolverine.” Fox didn’t want to foot the bill for the hefty CGI budget they would’ve needed to de-age you for the younger version of William Stryker; not when they’ve already spending a trough-load on shredding ten years off star Hugh Jackman’s face for it. Instead, Liev Schreiber – becoming sort of a habit-man for replacing actors in already established series; especially younger versions of said characters. You’ll recall he played a young John Clark, the character played by Willem Dafoe in “Clear and Present Danger” in “The Sum of All Fears” a couple of years back –will don the deadly trousers of Wolverine’s arch-enemy. The film also has a new official title too. It’ll be called “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” indicating there’ll be more ‘Origins’ tales to come – the first being the recently announced “Magneto” movie. Oh, and it’s already got a release date: May 1, 2009. Director Gavin Hood will start shooting in Australia before moving to New Zealand and, later, to New Orleans. Latter location is a clue that the storyline might include New Orleans-based character Gambit (who they’ve been trying to squeeze into the movies for years now), who is able to make objects explode and was a professional thief before joining the X-Men. The female lead in 20th Century Fox's spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine will reportedly be the Silver Fox, who, like Wolverine, was a member of the CIA's mutant covert ops unit called Team X. Fox apparently looked no further than its summer hit, Live Free or Die Hard, to find its Silver Fox. According to IESB.net, ass-whoopin' hottie Maggie Q will play the role. Maggie Q has also appeared in Balls of Fury and Mission: Impossible III. She co-stars with Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, in the forthcoming Fox thriller The Tourist. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is slated to begin filming shortly in Australia under the direction of Gavin Hood. |

So Comic Book Resources - via JoBlo - tells us that FOX are going to milk the shit out of the "X-Men" franchise (its teats must be stinging after Brett Ratner had its way with the poor thing!) by slipping to disc several straight-to-video "X Men : Origins" movies.
So, I'm guessing they'll decide which characters aren't worth a big screen outing of their own and send them straight to your loungeroom. Who was the guy with the inability to speak in public but had the power to start wars at the drop of a biro? Oh, my mistake, that's Bush I'm thinking of. Gambit, he's one of 'em right? Surely it's time he gets his own movie - I've heard his name mentioned for the past few "X-Men" movies (I believe Josh Holloway of "Lost" fame) was in line to play him at one stage, until FOX decided -once again - not to include him in the line-up. So which characters can we expect - besides Wolverine and Magneto who, as we all know, have big-screen ventures in the prep stages - to invade Blockbuster? Here's one possibility... Joe Carnahan left an interesting cryptic message at his site last week : A picture of Juggernaut, the character played by Vinnie Jones in "X-Men : Ratner fucks us over". Carnahan's apparently doing a direct-to-video sequel to "Smokin' Aces", would it be at all presumptious to assume he's also involved in a DTV "Juggernaut" movie? Yeah, of course it would be, but that's what us web wankers are here for... guessing, predicting, speculating and passing on whatever we hear. |

Twentieth Century Fox has added three more superheroes to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," with Ryan Reynolds set to play Deadpool, "Friday Night Lights" regular Taylor Kitsch to star as Gambit and hip-hop artist will.i.am joining the cast as John Wraith. Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston and Lynn Collins round out the cast as Victor Creed/Sabretooth, Col. William Stryker and Kayla Silver Fox, respectively. Hugh Jackman reprises the role of Wolverine in the "X-Men" spinoff that Gavin Hood is lensing in New Zealand, Australia and New Orleans. Pic bows May 1, 2009. David Benioff penned the script, which would reveal the origins of the Wolverine character and introduce other mutants not yet seen in the "X-Men" franchise. Marvel has been eyeing the possibility of casting Reynolds as Deadpool, an assassin with self-healing powers, for some time with the idea of spinning off the character into his own film series should the character prove popular among moviegoers. Fox and Marvel have also long wanted to add the card-throwing character of Gambit to the "X-Men" franchise but could never find a way to give him enough screen time among the many other mutants that have appeared in each film. Dominic Monaghan and Daniel Henney are the latest mutants to join the cast of Twentieth Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Monaghan will play Barnell, a mysterious character from Wolverine's past who has the ability to manipulate energy and electricity. Henney will portray Agent Zero, a member of the Weapon X program and an expert tracker with lethal marksman skills. Hugh Jackman stars as the titular character, while Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Taylor Kitsch, will.i.am, Lynn Collins and Ryan Reynolds have already boarded the project, which is shooting in New Zealand, Australia and New Orleans. That would be cool to see Deadpool in the movie cause he is my second favorite comic book character.

This movie is shaping up to be amazing. I cannot wait to see this. I think Jackman is amazing as Logan and Reynolds as Deadpool is just an awesome casting choice in my mind. I think the dude can seriously act. I loved him in Smokin' Aces.
Here is to hope this is a smash hit and is better then The Last Stand and atleast as good as X2. |

British martial artist-actor Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Shepherd: Border Patrol, Undisputed 2) has reportedly been cast as "Weapon 11" in the Fox-Marvel spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine. According to a fansite, Adkins' Weapon 11 "will feature in the end sequence fight scene against Wolverine." In other news, actor-model Daniel Henney has spoken to The Daily News about landing the role of "Agent Zero" in Wolverine, which marks his U.S. feature film debut. Henney recalled meeting with Fox's head of casting about Wolverine. "We sat down and she explained the basic premise of the film to me. I had no idea at this point that the director, producers, including Hugh Jackman, and executives at Fox had already made a decision on me," said Henney. "They had somehow seen some of my past films and thought I'd be right for the role." He added, "I then rushed back to my hotel, tore through the script, made a few phone calls to rearrange my schedule and called them back and happily accepted the role." Just four days later Henney was on a plane to New Zealand to begin filming. |

Purported plot details have emerged about director David Goyer and 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequel Magneto. The project follows the formative years of Erik Lensherr, the World War II concentration camp survivor who would later found and lead the Brotherhood of Mutants in an ongoing campaign against homo sapiens. The Coventry Telegraph points out a Magneto plot synopsis originally posted at Production Weekly: "The storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realization that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies." The Telegraph's reporter said that the Magneto script he read differed from this new synopsis in that it had Charles Xavier "working in Israel at a hospital where he helped war survivors from both sides to recover and rehabilitate." This storyline is in keeping with Uncanny X-Men #161, a flashback issue that revealed the origins of Xavier and Magneto's friendship. At a hospital for recovering Holocaust victims in Haifa, Israel, an ambulatory Charles Xavier discusses a potential evolution in man and the world's reaction to such a discovery. The early seeds of the philosophical battle between Professor X and Magneto are sown in a very frank discussion that precludes an encounter with HYDRA. The two essentially come out to one another and while Charles is foolish enough to believe he has discovered a new ally for the future, Magnus knows too well that their lives are taking separate paths. |

X-Men Origins: Wolverine won't be in theaters until May 1, 2009, but moviegoers will get their first real glimpse of the Hugh Jackman spin-off with the sci-fi remake The Day the Earth Stood Still on Friday, December 12. 20th Century Fox exclusively tells IGN that while the trailer will premiere in theaters a little over two weeks from now, fans will have to wait longer for it to turn up online or even on television. In short, the only way to see it soon will be to buy a ticket. "We are so excited that fans will be experiencing it first on the big screen," a Fox spokesperson tells IGN. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is still somewhat under wraps, but is believed to be primarily set around two decades before the events of the first X-Men movie. The story will focus on Logan/Wolverine's violent past, including his early dealings with William Stryker -- the origins of the Cold War-era Weapon X supersoldier program -- and Victor Creed, who would soon become his nemesis, Sabretooth. We'll know more when the preview debuts in theaters on Friday, December 12 with The Day the Earth Stood Still. |
