Best country for Euro horror
Seems like the foreign horror section is weighted a bit heavily towards the Asian side, so here's a thread for non-Asian foreign horror.
I vote Germany, with Italy being second |
how many german horror films have there been - other than calgari and nosferatu ?
|
Italy gave us giallo and zombies.
with the success of the day/nightwatch films russia could be a new contender... |
M, Faust, Waxworks, Der Golem, Hands of Orloc, Genuine, Testament of Dr. Mabuse, The Experiment, 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse
|
this is easy. Italy.
"Violence is an Italian art" Lucio Fulci |
Quote:
ok .. thats 11 should i list the italian ones ? |
that's 11 off the top of my head. Go ahead, list the Italian ones off the top of your head, but only the really good ones
|
Quote:
who said anything about really good ? that wasnt my criteria for why i loved italian cinema ! i can only think of a couple of good ones .. Deep Red ok, 1 |
Germany doesn't > Italy because of quantity. It's better because of quality. There's few Italian horror movies I can think of that would match up to what the German filmmakers were putting out in the silent era (yes, I know, The Experiment is fairly recent, but it's still damn good)
|
its extremely hard to measure films that diverse anyway ..
experimantal silent black and white vs modern italian film. both extremely influencial and important in their own ways but really - apples and oranges .. and although perhaps the experimental german films still have an influence felt today - not many people know they exist let alone have seen them. I havent seen most of them .. anywhere ... |
and the Italian schlock horror films AREN'T a niche market?
|
Quote:
those 2 particular niches arent very comparable - exept for some pretty broad comparrisons .. |
but they are both niche markets. You can't say "oh, but this one is a niche market" when the other one is as well
|
Quote:
but as for comparing them re. 'greatness ... the German films are classics .. groundbreaking .. like i said before their influence is still felt today. (watch Calgari, then watch Edward Scissorhands) A lot of Italian horror was influenced, more than influencing.. (although i'm sure their films influenced a lot of other filmmakers directly) I dont know if Carpenter was influenced by Bay of Blood - but a lot of other filmmakers were influenced by Carpenter) so niche or not i think you're comparing a small body of classic films to a huge body of mostly shlock films. (there are some 'classic' italian horror films .. but not in the same classification of 'classic' as the german silents.. |
1. Italy - Fulci
2. France - Switchblade romance |
In its current and recent state, I would have to with UK!
- 28 Days Later - Dog Soldiers - The Descent - Creep - Wilderness - Broken - Evil Aliens I'd say its pretty hard to beat... |
Goddamn English foreigners.
Anyway, I though this was the 'Japanese Horror' forum (incorporating Asia, specifically The Orient)? |
Quote:
(despite the fact that at the time asian horror has been the biggest influence on the genre since the italian wave) i personally feel that since this is more of an exploitation forum than just horror - and asians are probably the biggest producers of exploitation films (taking kick/samurai movies into consideration) - that it's entirely appropriate to have a piece of the forum devoted to asian films .. |
