I am a "Clinical Insomniac" and have been dealing with it for several years now, so I have a lot of practice...
First thing to do is try to narrow down why your having so much trouble falling asleep. You've already started by cutting out caffine, but there are many other causes possible. Some people that have difficulty in falling asleep are considered "Situational Insomniacs", that is, their sleep deprivation is directly related to one or more causes, such as, but not limited to; stress brought on by problems at work/school/ family, sexual frustration, depression, excitement over a new job, a new partner, new medication, change in routine, upcoming vacation... etc.) If this is you, once the stress is over, your old sleeping habit should return. A Clinical Insomniac" is basically a person that can go to bed exhausted and as soon as they try to relax...BOOM... they can't shut down their brain and go to sleep. Their brain is flooded with thoughts about everything from what they plan on having for breakfast in the morning to the latest stock quotes and the name of the actor in the movie...? and back again. (Of course, you have to rule out the situational, environmental and diet stuff first). If you are unlucky enough to be a "Clinical Insomniac" such as me, then it usually involves a trip to the Doctor for prescription sleeping medication, followed by a "sleep study." I have had good luck with Ambien and Rozerem, which I take unless I have been drinking alcohol. If I have a buzz on from drinking, I have no trouble in falling asleep. *Disclaimer* I am not suggesting in anyway that you drink any alcohol in any form! :D |

I say you just pop a couple of Tylenol PM's ;) Then you won't have to worry about what to do when you're up...cause you'll be fast asleep! ;)

Long time periods of insomnia really works on you mentally and emotionally as well as physically. It's something that needs to be addressed or it can effect your job/school in very detrimental ways.
You're stress level goes through the roof and you start snapping at everyone for nearly nothing - including your Boss (experience here - nearly got intimidation charges on me) and you can actually have brief periods of black outs and find yourself in some serious situations. Trust me on this. Get checked out. Especially if you are thirty or older. |

Unless you are like me then OTC sleep aides might as well be M&M's! There are times even my Rx's don't help me sleep. |

Ack :( Yeah, definately don't try that then...I think like Tat2 said, it's probably time to speak with a doctor. Sleeplessness can be caused by an infinite amount of things...probably best to seek some professional advice if nothing else seems to be helping :( |

No...get check out period. It is just more pressing once you hit the age of thirty. When your younger, metabolism is normally higher and the body can rebound quicker. Once you hit thirty or so, the metabolism slows and everything is amplified (healing time for injuries, sleep dep.,etc.) and can affect your long term health quicker. However, since you stated that you have some form of a heart problem, don't play around...make an appointment soon. |

I don't want to get into a political arguement/debate, but until the Republicans are out of office and the Democrats take control, we will continue to see the middle/working class suffer. What we need is a new-age "Boston Tea- Party"!!!!! The sad thing is, 200 years ago it was people fighting for their freedom and are highly thought of, now-a-days if it would happen...they would be labeled as terrorists! Go figure. Well, until then...we-be-screwed! |
Dear Sleepless in Georgia,
I'm going to be hard pressed to believe that prescription sleep aides do not work for you. If you are having severe trouble with sleeping they are going to give you medications that will anesthetize you. If you say that doesn't work, what you're telling us that if you were prepped and put on a table for surgery in a hospital, they wouldn't be able to get you under. Get yourself a prescription for Ambian sleep aide or xanax because either one of those most certainly will make you fall asleep. |
Try reading the "This or That?" thread from start to finish.
zzzzzz..... |
Sounds like your in love..
thats a sign of true love when you can't sleep after your g.f has been there. Did you get up at that same hour when your g.f was there for a bit of a cuddle or what ever ..?? (em not being rude). |

If that's the case, and I like you keed, but I'm having a hard time with this, then you need to see a specialist and quick, because shit like that can cause heart failure. Do you understand that? If you're actually having a problem like that, tell your mum, go to the doctor, get a referal, see a specialist, and get help, because if you don't you're going to sufer serious problems.
This is not a joke. Not sleeping is not good for you. People don't seem to realize this fact. All the time people are like, "Hahaha I didn't sleep for three days hahaha." THAT'S BAD!!!! It's bad for your brain, your muscles, and YOUR HEART. It's not funny, and it's not cool. See your doctor, see a specialist and get some rest. |

AmbianCR is the one you're thinking of. It has 2 layers, one that dissolves quickly to help you get to sleep, the other dissolves slowly to keep you asleep (damn I sound like a fucking commercial). I've tried that, worked great for sleeping, but I think I could have slept for 3 days on it! Regular Ambian doesn't have the slow release layer, so it just helps you get to sleep. That's what I take now and have had pretty good luck with it. |

I call B.S.
How can you not go to sleep for 4 days, be immune to any and all sleeping aides all because you miss sleeping with a girl. Just pay for a prostitute, that kind of cuddling will get ya goin'. |

If theres one thing i love very muchly
and thats my SLEEP.. when em tired..nobody interferes with my sleep ..'all hail the sleep' hope you work it out soon VC.. |
Sometimes sleep aides don't work for me either. And for my roommate, they don't work at all. Things that are supposed to make him tired make him more awake and things that should wake him up, sometimes makes him sleepy. Body chemistry has it's own way of doing things. I used to be able to sleep through anything, now I'm very much an insomniac. Arg, I hate it!

Too many people I want to quote here, so I'm just going to try and do this from memory. ~heh, yeah right~
I've used Ambien in the past and it has worked very well for me. There are people in this world, my roommate being one of them, that things have the opposite effect on. If she takes a sleeping pill she's wide awake, if she drinks coffee she gets sleepy. VC, you need to do something and fast. I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations for you. But I want to tell you my nephew went without sleep for about a week and ended up in the psych ward of the local hospital. The lack of sleep plus his VERY vivid imagination was NOT a good combination. Too bad you don't live around here - I have an herbal tea that's for insomnia. I haven't had to use it, but I have been told by other people that it works great. But, seeing how you're one of those people that stuff has the opposite effect on, I don't know if it would work. Would be worth a try, tho. I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you. Keep me updated. |
