Dune

How is this? Can I have some reviews and/or comparisons.

slasherman 05-14-2006 12:08 PM

you mean the Lynch version ?

Jacob Singer 05-14-2006 12:16 PM

Buff, the problem with this film was that RH Giger and Jodorowski wasted a lot of money but they didn't had flm anythin' so Dino de Laurentis fired Jodorowski and get Lynch as director. When Lynch re-starts to work on the film, the producers didn't give him all the budget that he needs, and Lynch couldn't make the film as he wanted (a lot of material was cut, he filmed over 4 hours but the final cut was around 177 min.) When Lynch talks about Dune he always said that was a traumatic experience, and he ever fells like the film is incompleted.

still one of Lynch's best movies...Lost Highway better...I sure like Dune much better than the quasi Mulholland Drive....Wild at heart is pretty good too

I can't say the shame, isn't bad but it could be much better.

Otherwise I think that Blue velvet is the best film of D. Lynch

i loved Dune.

I was one of the few who had read the series and still liked the movie.

a lot of people who didnt read the books didnt like the movie because they didnt understand it. (it would have required listening to the dialogue and narration - something most people dont bother with - its just a distraction between the car crashes.

Miss Olivia 05-14-2006 01:12 PM

It's very interesting visually, but the actual script runs a tad to the ludicrous. I love the book, it's one of my favorites and it seems like they tried way too hard to shove in as many references to the book as they could. Most time I tend to feel cheated when the movie doesn't follow the original manuscript close enough but there were sections of the Dune movie that made me giggle because they were so silly. Like all of the character's have lengthy internal dialogues in the middle of just about every scene in the movie......annoying as hell.

chainleen 05-14-2006 01:49 PM

I still love the David Lynch version of Dune.

I don't think the script was that silly, he took a very detailed book and made it into a 2 hour movie while still trying to let the viewer know what was going on...I think it would have been impossible otherwise. Every action by the characters in dune was due to some personal and political force that extended back generations in some cases and there was no way he could have conveyed that in the time he had with 2 way dialog. I think it would have been all over the place if he had tried that.

Miss Olivia 05-14-2006 01:55 PM

I understand how large the scope of the book was and I really do appreciate that it's a difficult task when you have so much material to translate, but it's the way they went about doing it that irritated me so much. I couldn't get into the writing. But I still own the movie so I didn't dislike it too much....

MisterSadistro 05-14-2006 02:33 PM

Lynch hated it and had his name removed from it (as was pointed out to me recently). The monicker Alan Smithee now resides on it as director :D

Its Alan Smithee over here on the extended version but the original on still has Lynch's name on it as director. Might give this flick a day in court this week.

mothermold 05-14-2006 10:29 PM

Lynch has made some very good films to be sure and I still count Dune among them....despite it's director disowning it.It's a tuff story(book)to adapt any way you slice it and I for one think he did a fine job of it.

And the effects still pretty much hold up after all these years.

komi 05-17-2006 02:03 PM

good movie  :D

ItsAlive75 05-17-2006 04:06 PM

I can't like Dune because my dad's had a boner for it for years.

...and I can't enjoy anything that gives my dad a boner.

Assuming you meant "transvestite porn" I'll say no. I did find his stash of bondage porn though... It's creepy knowing your dad likes his women tied up and gagged.

Toooooo much info.

DUNE!

Iam a Dune addict. I love the movie both versions of it infact. I thought that the Lynch version was interesting & had a really weird unearthly feel to it. I've read his script too & the movie seems a bit incomplete but I can see where he wanted to go & why he couldn't get there. Something about the movie always seems to draw me into it.

well, it has an outstanding cast, some crazy images and performances .. rich lush sets, nice FX and miniatures, great toto/eno/lanois score.. and an interesting story.

whats not to like ?

Yeh I did mean porn, bit to eager in my posting there. Bondage porn would be a strange thing to find. But count you lucky stars you didn't find anything homemade :)

Lengthy running internal dialogues and a Navigator that resembles a giant vulva with eyes.....

urgeok 05-19-2006 01:29 AM

uh yeah .. nothing ruins a good movie like people talking..

_____V_____ 05-19-2006 02:45 AM

the first time I saw it...I had a puzzled look on my face when it was over...then I saw it the second, and third times...and I loved it.

the premise is awesome, I loved Kyle MacLachlan in a role which perfectly fitted him (saw him in "The Hidden" where he wasnt casted right)...Lynch's direction is superb, one of the very few sci-fi adventures which left a lasting impression on me.

This was the only movie which made me want to read the books after I saw it...I remember running to the bookstore to look for em but didnt find many parts of the series, cept the original and pt.3, which I still got today.

I managed to get my hands on the game though. It was really cool, visually stunning, and tough as hell to play.

I read somewhere that Peter Jackson was gonna remake it once he finished the LOTR series and King Kong...dunno where that one went...but it would be great if Dune had the Jackson touch...

A true sci-fi classic.

urgeok 05-19-2006 04:57 AM

i could definately handle a jackson remake of dune ..

he wont have the edgy insanity of Lynch, but the worm effects could use some updating ...

Hey, opinions are like assholes....everybody's got one...and most people think that every other one on the planet stinks....

Miss Olivia 05-19-2006 07:05 AM

Except theirs....

The Vern 05-29-2006 01:14 PM

If your gonna watch up, check the original Lynch version and not the Directors cut, special edition. Alan Smithee rides again. Lynch said bollocks to that and had his name struck from the credits.

It's longer, boring and totally pointless (Not to mention in MONO!)

da vinci code doesnt have a lot going for it .. and the amout of dialogue isnt the biggest problem .. its the lack of pacing and passion. the performances are too controlled and plodding ..

my dinner with andre is 2 hours of a dinner conversation between 2 people.. its one of my favorite movies - i think it's fascinating...
da vinci code is just dull in every sense of the word..

Whatever he's great in that flick! I like how he seems weird and out of place..... he is an alien in it after all.

I was pleasantly surprised with the Sci-Fi Dune mini-series...but a Jackson probably would be cool as long as he didn't try adding too much.

he is always a bit odd ... a fish out of water with a mama's boy face .. he could have made a great bond villian.
