Dark Water (2002)

DVD DESCRIPTION:Japanese director Hideo Nakata (THE RING, JU-ON) adapts another story by RING novelist Koji Suzuki for a supremely creepy tale of atmospheric horror. Yoshimi (Hitomi Kuroki) is a soon-to-be single mother going through a rather nasty divorce and struggling for custody of her adorable five-year-old daughter, Ikuko (Rio Kanno). Forced to find a new job and home, Yoshimi settles for a drab concrete highrise with long, unpopulated corridors and damp, shadowy interiors that include a patch of murky water dripping through the ceiling from the apartment above. As the building's mildewy recesses take their psychological toll on Yoshimi, Ikuko keeps stumbling upon a small, red, child's handbag that belonged to a little girl named Mitsuko (Mirei Oguchi), who lived in the upstairs apartment and disappeared under mysterious circumstances--and who seems to be exerting her ghastly influence over the mother-daughter pair in increasingly menacing ways. Sustaining an aura of dread that would make Roman Polanski proud, DARK WATER mines metaphor-rich water images of gurgling bathtubs and ominous rooftop water towers for a thrilling horror odyssey that also works as a social commentary on the dynamics of motherhood, madness, and the modern nuclear family (ala THE SHINING or ROSEMARY'S BABY). Like THE RING, Nakata's superlative slice of J-horror was given the Hollywood treatment with a 2005 remake starring Jennifer Connelly STORY: 3 out of 5 ACTORS QUALITY: 3 out of 5 VIOLENCE: 1 out of 5 BLOOD: 0 out of 5 GORE: 0 out of 5 SPECIAL EFFECTS: 2 out of 5 LOVE: 0 out of 5 THOUGHTS: I wanted to see this before I saw the american version...I have to say what a boring movie..The main actress was dull as can be....The water was really nothing.. OVERALL SCORE: 2 out of 5: I hope the american version is better... SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!! Read On for detailed movie events.. Ok, the main actress was the only person to die in this movie, which took forever to get 2....The music was scary...I didnt make me jump or get scared....The water didnt turn dark until the very end....The dark water was this little girl that died in the water tank on top of the building....All she wanted was a mommy..... |
my rating gives this movie a 4 out of five ..
maybe 4.5 acting - excellent, story - very good effects - efficient for the tale being told. lots of tension ... |
this movie SUCKS.
|
Quite liked the Japanese Version - 6.5/10
The US Version sucked!! 4.5/10 - well acted but even changed the end scene which for me made the Japanese version. Oh and decided to leave out all the tension too. Very poor Effort |

it was dull and boring for the entire movie, and i fell asleep 3 times. the ending was stupid, and the ONLY thing i liked was how she was just in that tank for so long, and the scene when she found her.
i DO however, give it credit that there was nice suspense, and it kept you waiting the whole movie. |
i think Dark Water (the origional) works especially well if you are a parent.
a lot of the tension and suspense played on the theme of a single woman struggling to keep a job and be a good mom .. but all the odds are stacked against her. not often you find a horror film mature enough to deal with very real life issues and find a way to use them to heighten the terror.. |
because most horror films have nothing to do with that sort of aspect. this, to me, isnt a horror film, its a drama about that woman and her problems. and i think the ghost might as well have been in her mind, formed because of her over stress and loss of sanity. face it, she was losing her mind completely
|
the little girl went back at the end as a young woman and saw the ghost of her mother ...
|
ah well. i may have been asleep at that part. either way, i've seen much better. it wasn't like, the worst movie ever though.

For me, it was very very boring. Maybe it was because I watched it early in the morning (2am or something), but it seemed like it went on and on and on and on and on (see? :p)... |
I thought this movie was going to be really good and scary. However, I was so mad at the ending. It was really bad in my opinion.
|
Dark water and Wolf Creek are on my "I can't believe I wasted 8 bucks on this "list.
