I don't want Brokeback Mountain to sweep the Oscars
I haven't seen it, I don't know if I like it or not. It's just that everything I've seen or read about it just seems so...underwhelming. I mean, the last couple years, even though I disagreed with their pick for best picture, they were at least SOMETHING. Like, "Yeah, I didn't think ROTK was the best movie this year, but it had the giant-ass epic thing going" or "No, I thought Aviator should've won, but Million Dollar Baby was good, had Eastwood and Freeman, Swank wasn't bad, et cetera" But...Brokeback Mountain...I haven't seen it, but something like Munich seems like it'd be right up their alley. I'm not even saying pick the BEST movie, cause no way they'd even nominate Sin City. Crash or GN&GL, maybe, but all the buzz is saying...Brokeback Mountain. Nothing against the movie, I like Jake Gyllenhaal, but...that's it? Seems like we're getting another English Patient year...

Hollywood loves movies with homo themes and this one's about 2 gay cowboys. I think it's practically a given that it'll sweep the Oscars, although I am in complete agreement with ya that there are probably at least a dozen better movies that came out this year.
I'm of the opinion that his work on The Hulk should have disqualified Ang Lee from any Oscar contention for the rest of his career. |
that's like saying because he made Dead Alive, Peter Jackson shouldn't be nominated for anything ever again
|
And the oscar goes to......Heath Legder.
I'll probably throw up if I here that. I don't really think they'll be a sweep of any kind this year, looking at what's in serious contention I'd say the 5 majors are going to take a couple each. Like last year actor and actress were all but locked and you knew The Aviator and MDB were going to clean up and the year before after the first couple you could tell ROTK was going to have a big night but this time it seems up in the air, just my opinion. p.s. Kinda funny how the most ungay movie theme got turned gay and is a hit. |

i doubt very seriously that this film will ever be seen by john q. public, but in 20 years i'm sure they'll call it a "masterpiece". |

Dead Alive is a low budget horror film from a fledgling director just getting his feet wet. The Hulk is a large budget piece of shit from an accomplished director. No comparison. |
Quote:
Sling Blade Forrest Gump Rain Man Yeah, the Academy loves any theme that features homosexuals or mentally challenged people. If someone ever makes a movie about a retarded gay guy, they're a lock for every award possible. |

peter jackson ..yuck!!
Frighteners was on the other night.. did anyone see the part where they were in the abandoned/derelict hospital.. no power and yet the chick was able to start the elevator to escape..'shrug'. Well..i too have been keeping a close eye on the reviews for that homo movie and in accordance..the public seems to be curious cos apprently ..its doing well in the box office.. I don't think i will see it either . |
It's just art. Who cares what side of the spectrum it's on anyway? Left, right, it's all the same, and someone is probably going to be pissed about it no matter what happens or what the "industry" says. The way I look at it is, "You're damned if you do and damned if you don't"

Maybe "That Homo Movie" ( ;) ) will deserve to win Oscars. |
well - i have seen brokeback mountain and found it incredible. it was deep and tender and well-acted. it brought a tear to my eye near the end. was it perfect - not by any means. but it is an impressive piece of work and, as far as i'm concerned, is as deserving of oscar attention as many of the other films this year.
that said, i'd still vote syriana as best picture. i could see ledge as best actor and gyllenhal as best supporting. (i was also fairly impressed by anne hathaway and michelle williams (who was in H20). as for best director - i'd probably prefer to see Clooney get it for Goodnight and Good Luck - but if Lee won for brokeback, i would consider it well deserved. |

I really really feel this way about Hollywood. Maybe I'm a dewy eyed romantic, but Hollywood used to be more discreet in all that it did. Now it's like, "I'm a whore who can't act making tens of million a year." |

Meh...I'm not even interested in this movie...
You think a good HORROR movie will ever win any real awards? |
Silence of the Lambs

AND...If there were anymore...You'd know about 'em Horror movies just never get a fair shake... |
Not passing judgement (because I am above doing that, because I am better than those who do!) but even Jackson has grabbed some Oscars with that touchie-feelie thing. Heavenly Creatures had the girl girl thing; and Lord of the Rings had weepy hobbit man-hugging all over it. I'm just making an observation, is all. I actually don't care about the Oscars, most of the time.
|
Oh yeah, uh...."Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" 1931, Best Actor Fredric March.
|
Exorcist, Alien(s), Shadow of the Vampire, Psycho, Jaws, Bride of Frankenstein, Rosemary's Baby, Kwaidan, The Birds, The Uninvited, Misery, Rear Window, Vertigo, all got at least an Oscar nomination.
And as for SotL and how it "couldn't happen w/o Hopkins", it might not have been as good a movie as it was without Hopkins |
Well acting is part of what makes a great movie so I don't see why the fact that a good actor who killed a roll in the film takes any credit from it.

you guys don't honestly take the oscars seriously, do you? if so, my opinion of this board just took a sharp nosedive.
I have been of the opinion for a while that the Pulitzer is the only award that means anything at all, or can be trusted. |

It's just a discussion, personally I wouldn't say I take 'em all that seriously but the films involved are always really good if not great so it's interesting to discuss and see who wins. |
Today's movies are trying goto alot of gay or close to gay films. look at the shit on cable (hbo-sho) It won't suprise me if gay back mountian get movie of the year. But dose usly go by how much a film make and stay #1. And why the fuck in any t.v show they show more man-ass, what about woman-ass. I kind of think alot of movie and shows are gay or way to weak.
|
Sometimes there are blockbusters in the oscars but usually('specially last year) it's mostly movies that the average joe haven't even heard of or weren't going to see until it recieves the nomination.

Are you saying you don't like homosexual-themed films and/or TV shows, and have a problem with man-ass? |
to be honest, i think a lot of the people criticizing the film (and its oscar chances) ought to see it first. . . .is it a love story about two men - yes - but its more than that in so many ways. i really think it is a great film (the best this year? not for me, but still great)
to criticize it only because it has two male lovers seems remarkably narrowminded to me |

Well, ya got what ya wanted.
Those are my favorite shows when everything's spread around and everybody gets their props. |
Quote:
1) Sin City got nothing. Not even a visual effects nomination 2) Good Night and Good Luck got nothing 3) The Meaning of Life did not get motherfucking nominated for best animated short. I actually refused to watch this portion of the Oscars because of this. |
Do you think Brokeback Mountain would've got as many nominations if it wasn't about guy guys? I mean, even if it was lesbians instead do you think it would've gotten as much acclaim? Anyway, I wanted History of Violence to get more nominations and it didn't, I was surprised to learn that March of the Penguins made more than all of the best picture nominees.
|
Quote:
I'm not saying yes or no. My stance is simply this: Who gives a shit? Seriously, why argue about how much acclaim it would or would not get if it were a different movie? |
I'm asking if it was the same story with different genders playing the roles with only slight changes made to accomidate the sexes. Do I really care? No, it was more rhetorical. But why ask questions about what would happen at all in that case? Everybody likes a little speculation.

Too graphic and sexual I guess. Then again with the way things are now, you'd think graphic and sexual would be more accepted than gay cowboys. Having said that...although I believe Crash is the better film, I think the academy wasn't ready to present an oscar to an homosexual themed movie. Just my little theory. |
The reason it's acclaimed is because of the statement involving homosexuality. And aside from that, the directing and acting is very good. The Best Picture films had either social or political statements with very well done direction and acting.

BTW, CAPOTE WAS GAY!!! They gave Hoffman an Oscar, and he played a gay character. The homosexuality has nothing to do with anything |
