When I came to this thread, I was under the impression you were talking about sub-genres of horror. Even though that's not the topic at hand, that's what I feel like typing up, so that's all you're gonna get outta me.
Vampire (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire) Zombie (Night of the Living Dead, Dead Alive) Hillybilly (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn) Hauntings (13 Ghosts, The Amityville Horror) Sci-Fi Horror (Alien, Event Horizon) Psychological (Silence of the Lambs, In the Mouth of Madness) Werewolf (Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers) Slasher (Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street) Occult/Satanic (The Wicker Man, The Devil's Advocate) Exploitation (Last House on the Left, Cannibal Holocaust) I may have missed some. Feel free to add to this... |

I wanted to add "Fairytale" (Company of Wolves) and maybe "Satirical" (Dawn of the Dead).
It occurs to me that many movies could fall into several categories, so abbreviations/codes could be formulated for all of these, and movie lists could be made with all the abbreviated category names listed after each title. I used to shop at a video store that did something similar, and reading their catalog was really interesting, because they would list things as belonging to multiple categories. |

It's definately a zombie flick. The fact that the zombies are "just people infected with a rage virus" doesn't change that in my eyes (Or the eyes of Danny Boyle, the director.) Them being infected with rage is what makes them zombies in the first place. They lose their humanity and become bloodthirsty cannibals. Here's a quote of the films director referring to them as zombies in an interview.... Quote:

No, probably not, Rayne. I didn't see it as a zombie flic. Zombies to me are corpses a'risen not brain damaged virally infected peeps scouring London or wherever. Plus, 28 Days goes into my top twenty films that were a waste of my time.
There is case for Voodoun (Use Serpant and the Rainbow if you'd like) the substance of legends combined to make a person in such a trance it's as if they're dead. Now, I realize that the latter description is pretty close the 28 Days scenario. The reason I listed the Voodoun legend is because it is a major factor in all zombie mythos. I totally prefer and usually will only except the former description of zombies. That's they way they work in this little Witch's imagination, and I don't care if they're shambling, running or hopping on pogo sticks. If they're dead, rotting, and eating people, they're zombies, otherwise, bugger off. This is just the way that I classify zombies. Now someone roll their eyes, start a debate, and otherwise let's all be jackasses, because this all just opinion and who really gives a shit, right? Right.:D |
Zombie doesn't mean undead, case closed.
Undead means what most consider a zombie. Zombified is a term for someone or something that is infected/being controlled/mindless/ etc. Whatever. If my definition is inaccurate don't correct me i'll probably explode...:( |
Why not, I'll get in on this.
I agree that the "Infected" were not zombies. However, I still consider 28 Days Later to be a zombie movie. Why? It's has the same formula. Small group trying to avoid hordes of mindless ______ whose only concern is to kill them. They find verious forms of shelter leading up to an inevitable conclusion. I dont care if you fill in the black with "flying plastic bags filled with pissed off cats", it's still a zombie movie in my book. |
One of the definitions for Zombie is...
-A corpse revived by supernatural powers. Another definition for Zombie is... -One who looks or behaves like an automaton. 28 Days falls under the second description, therefor I'd say it's a zombie movie. That being said, before I really did the research I didn't look at it as a zombie film, but if that's the definition then that's the definition. |

I think I remember this movie from when I was a kid. I had a sleepover and rented two movies, texas chainsaw massacre and I think this one...I don't remember anything about it except this evil guy would stare at people and they would vomit some of their insides. ( I had to keep turning away!) |

Yep, that scene with the intestines is from Gates o' Hell.
I enjoyed seeing that in a theatre when it came out, and it was lots of fun. In addition, that was a great time. I was still in high school and practically everything was fun at that time! |
that scene has been in the back of my thoughts ever since I saw it...about 15 years ago!
