The Bride Of Frankenstein (1935)
watched this again after first viewing it several years previously and i have to conclude that it is a classic.
Boris Karloff is amazing as the monster and you've got to hand it to Colin Clive as Doctor Henry Frankenstein. And of course there is that classic moment in the movie when the monster goes to the old blind man's house..."Smooke...good" |
One of the greatest films of all time. The true meaning of "horror classic" Everything about the film is brilliant
|
isn't that with bela or long chaney?

Yes, it is a brilliant horror film. I now can appreciate it, though for years I didn't care for the old Frankenstein movies because I was such a fan of the book and I never felt they really did the book justice. But this one in particular is a great film, I can't really find fault with it except for my own personal bias. But it will never be a favorite of mine. I do love Boris Karloff though. Talk about scary.

I liked this one better than the original Frankenstein. The Universal Legacy collections are awesome for people who are just getting into classic horror. I've got the Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Mummy collections.

I agree. These collections effing rule. It used to be, you hadda spend twenty bucks on a single movie (or even more, depending on how far back you are remembering), and now you can spend about that same amount and check out a whole series of films, generally with still galleries, commentaries, and so on. I think Universal does a great job of presenting their films. They look great on DVD.
Universal, Something Weird, Disney and Anchor Bay all put out great video. Here's a neat tip: If it's summertime and you're feeling a little warm and sweaty, put on a "Creature from the Black Lagoon" film; all that water will cool you off and take your mind off the weather. |

i must say hat the wolf man is brilliant. But havent you seen werewolf of london. thats great.
|
I liked "Werewolf of London" a lot. David Naughton was great in that.
No, I'm just kidding. It's a great film. It even has giant carnivorous plants in it, I think it's the only werewolf film that does. There is a very, very clever walking transformation scene created by John Fulton and Jack Pierce, very smooth, very nice. I don't think anyone else did one quite like it. Usually this sort of thing is done with cuts, and they went the extra mile to composite a separate element of the pillars going by. |
The Wolf Man is probably my favorite classic movie, but I too really enjoyed Werewolf of London. I first saw it a few years ago on Turner Classic Movies around Halloween (like so many other classics I might add, TCM rules!).

Boris Karloff is an amazing actor and definatly one of my favorites. all the frankienstien movies are to be remembered as true classics. I am personally a great fan of almost all black and white movies. even arsnic and old lace which has both Boris Karloff and Carrey Grant in it.

I recently viewed Bride of Frankenstein for the first time and absolutely loved it. I think this is one of the most brilliant horror flicks ever. What're some opinions (besides these^) on this film? |

I hate to say it, but I'm not crazy about Colin Clive, although his acting did get better in bride. But, my props go out to Elsa Lanchester for a few all too short minutes of excellence and to Ernest Thesiger. Praetorius makes the movie much more interesting as a kind of personification of Henry's evil. He contrasts Henry's misguided science with outright black magic in the scenes with the tiny people he's created and is surprisingly subtle in his manipulating the monster. The addition of this character and the portrayal alike were fantastic. I have Bride and aren't too crazy about most of the Frankenstein, except of course for Karloff. Do you think the Frankenstein collection would be a worthwhile purchase, then? I have seen neither Son nor Ghost of Frankenstein. I'm kind of curious with the legacy collections having been brought up in earlier posts and being very fond of the Wolfman and Creature from the Black Lagoon ones I have.

The films are all well presented, and the extras are interesting. Unfortunately, not all the movies have a commentary. As far as the Frankenstein movies are concerned, the first two are definately the best, but that doesn't mean that the others aren't worth seeing. The Legacy Collections are also quite reasonably priced, given what you are getting in them. |
Yah, in my opinon, Frankenstein alone is worth the $20. It's a great set.
|
It is a cool set. I rented it a while back and may buy it at some point, nice to have all that Frankie.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon set is totally cool, I think I like it best of all the sets for some reason. It just works for me...I dunno, cool monster suits and monster performances, water, fish, swimming chicks...............for me it just has everything. Here's to the fish-headed fish man! |

This collection is going to require an international order real soon now... |
I've picked up all of the Universal Legacy sets, and I think Frankenstein gets the best treatment. Good commentaries on the original film and Bride, and I liked the documentaries.
Bride has an excellent combination of horror and comedy, and the score is brilliant, especially for its time. I can't think of a single flaw, really, though I'd like it if Universal dropped some serious money into restoring those first two films. The sequels are entertaining enough, albeit in a much schlockier way. They're good Saturday afternoon fare, but they don't really compare to the first two films. |
