Im 99% sure this will get moved to Classic horror, but since Im a senior member and this is the first thread I've posted in ummmm.....forever, maybe y'all will let it slide.

Anyway, Im doing an informative speech for English class about why the original NOTLD is the best horror movie of all time.

I have my angle with the whole racism/social commentary thing going on, but Im just checking if there is some site or resuorce that has a lot of info on this, that'd be great.

Or if you just wanna give me your opinion on this, feel free :)

EXTR3MIST 02-01-2005 01:47 PM

My opinion is that there is no racism or social commentary - such findings are the work of over active imaginations and overwhelming desire to attach significance to simple fantasy.

Or not.

orangestar 02-01-2005 02:09 PM

hey, Im trying to do a speech here.

EXTR3MIST 02-01-2005 02:17 PM

Actually, Extr3mist has a point. According to Romero, the social commentary was not intentional

Vodstok 02-02-2005 11:51 AM

It was semi-intentional. They realised what they had when they cast Duane Jones and decided to insinuate some social commentary into it. he repeated the theme with the next two also.

Dawn of the Dead was rampant consumerism and loss of individuality in the 70s, day was the fear of a man-made apocalypse and the military. And a zombie with a walkman.

Sometimes, when a film is so different, a (social) comment is made unintentionally. In most cases it causes publicity and I think most filmmakers would sit back and let the ball roll. Many conversations were made because of the different way NOTLD was cast and written. Romero is a genius, but I really think he was only making a horror movie the best way he could with very little money. And he did a great job!

filmmaker2 02-03-2005 05:13 AM

NOTLD was groundbreaking, in that its main character (as Romero claims) was cast in spite of rather than because of his race. From a casting perspective alone, that's noteworthy ...I find that far more interesting than the topic of what the film later evolved into.......

A very interesting angle, I suppose, is a discussion of how "there" the commentary is in the first place, since opinions are so widely varied. Hey, it's a thought-provoking movie.

Vodstok 02-03-2005 05:16 AM

And to think, to a lot of people, it's just dead people eating guts.

urgeok 02-03-2005 05:35 AM

i think it's fair to say ...
that the one simple message that comes naturally - is at the end of the world .. we are all equal .. at least judged by our actions .. not our status.

nothing new, you see it time and time again in apocalyptic films.

the Duane Jones character was assuming a leadership roll because he was a man of actions ... the father clearly had a problem with it ..

i think the biggest prejudice in the movie was between the living and the dead.

MrShape 02-03-2005 09:50 AM

They were probably making a social comment about the deep racial hatred living people have against flesh eating dead ones.

Vodstok 02-03-2005 10:04 AM

Why does it always have to be a dead/living thing?

Cant we all just get along?

i'd really like to .. if they could just learn to be satisfied with licking, rather than biting ... everybody would be happy.

Vodstok 02-03-2005 10:14 AM

You cant expect that much from a zombie. They have it hard, you know, with the brain-rot and all. We must learn to give and not ask for much in return. Granted, i realise that once a zombie has gotten a finger, they generally try to make off with your arm, but be understanding. Im not saying let them have ALL of tyour fingers, just a couple, to let them know you care.

Only the living can stop the hate. All the dead have tried to do is eat us, and can any of us honestly say we have never told anyone "Eat me"?

sure .. i've said 'blow me' too ,, but i didnt expect anyone to actually blow on it.

the problem with zombies is that they never get full.. they eat like your teenage daughters boyfriend .. munch munch munch, and never gain an ounce.
you think after guzzling down a few pounds of intestines that they'd want to sit back, put the feet up on the coffee table and chill with some icecream or something but no ... off they go again.

wouldnt it be funny if their sole instinct wasnt to eat the living ... but something else .. like .. read books, or watch gameshows...
play tennis ...weed lawns ...
that would be handy .. they never sleep or die .. they dont need money .. a couple of them could weed an entire neighbourhood in a week.

Vodstok 02-03-2005 10:30 AM

Typical. Your attitude is what lead to slavery. You want "seperate but equal" zombies. Well, it just doesnt work, my freind. we must embrace them.

And i dont appreciate your sterotyping. How do you know they all just eat and eat and eat? Have you met every zombie, mr KKK?:D

uhhh, i've seen a few ..
they come into work and try to tell me what happened on survivor and/or friends the night before.

None of them have actually tried to eat me yet but that might have something to do with the sour look on my face.

Vodstok 02-03-2005 10:34 AM

I can pull off that "Liberal Naziism" thing pretty well, eh?
