Why do you watch horror films?
Hi everyone,
I'm a student at Ithaca College and I'm doing a research paper on why people choose to watch horror movies. I found this website and I thought it would be a perfect venue to ask this question. I would greatly appreciate it if you answered the following questions: Why do you watch horror movies? When did you start watching horror movies? How do you feel when you watch a horror movie? What is your favorite horror movie? All responses are welcome. I will probably be quoting some of them in my paper. Thank you! |

Q: Why do you watch horror movies?
A: They're entertaining in many different ways. Q: When did you start watching horror movies? A: Probably when I was six or seven, thereabouts...roughly thirty years ago. Q: How do you feel when you watch a horror movie? A: Horror movies vary greatly in their effect. Some are bad, cheesy, and funny. Some are depressing, grim, upsetting. Some are exciting, stimulating, fun. There is a GREAT variance, and it is difficult to get bored with that kind of variety. This particular genre has a lot of interesting tonalities. Q: What is your favorite horror movie? A: Probably "Night of the Living Dead," because it succeeds at being horrifying, the basic goal of any horror film. So.........do I get a cookie now?? |

1. Because when they're good they are the most memorable. Fear and Laughter are our two most primal emotions. I dig that.
2. Started when I was 4 and watched Magic about a ventriliquist dummy that comes to life. It may not be horror, but it was scary when I was 4. 3. Primal, bloodthirsty and gleeful 4. Probably The Shining or Halloween. Honorable mention to Suspiria. They all have those chills I seek out on a daily basis. |

Why do you watch horror movies?
**Because I like them? The genre appeals to me out of versatility, and that we are subjected to things we'd otherwise never experience. As with all types of movies, horror is a chance to see the creativity of another - to see their fears and imagination become hybrid in a tangible form, somebodies personal perspective put into film is always interesting, regardless of subject matter... When did you start watching horror movies? **I can't remember clearly when I first WITNESSED any part of a horror movie, but I do recall seeing Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm st, both at about the age of 7. How do you feel when you watch a horror movie? **That depends on how well it's made, how/where it's filmed, use of a good musical score, a convincing cast, a RANGE of things. A good horror movie can make you experience many emotions or feelings throughout. The horror movies I appreciate the most are the ones that actually "scare" me a little. I'm not referring to the many attempts to make you jump that the average horror film throws your way...I'm talking about the films that bring about contemplation of a fear that you share with the maker of the film, be it pre-existing, or something you've never even considered. Suspense is also good, but a distant second, gore isn't all that important, but good when used effectively, and moderately. *Tense *Disgusted *Sympathetic (not just for the victims either) ???I dunno??? It's quite hard to put it simply. What is your favorite horror movie? **If I chose only one, I feel that this would discredit the many other horror films I've appreciated through the years for various reasons. This is a question I no longer answer. - B. |

For those that did not answer the questions seriously, or that don't INTEND to:
You know... I don't personally like being generalised as a horror fan, there is a lot of negativity out there cast upon us due to uninformed people judging us based on their ignorance. I know for a fact that most of you other horror fans get pissed off by this also, and think it's complete bullshit as I do. I don't usually complain about it, as there's no point arguing with ignorance. However, many others posting here would be the first to complain about how we're stereotyped - yet many you have given the kind of answers that will only serve to perpetuate negativity. Even if you speak in obvious jest, if those are the only answers you choose to provide - those are the only answers that will be taken into account. As I see it, this person seems genuine AND relatively neutral in regards to our viewing habits - something that you should consider a GOOD thing, as we are being afforded more in this, than we are by the masses. Try to understand where I'm coming from, and be a little more mature. Be part of the solution, not the problem. And AMK, you shouldn't be endorsing this foolish behaviour either. |

I've always liked horror movies, except that I'm not a fan of gratuitous blood and gore.
Many of my favorites are from the 30's and 40's. These were usually B movies, but to me they are good escapist entertainment. I outgrew my taste for Horse Operas at a fairly early age. I also became bored with "It's a Wonderful Life", "Our Town", and "Cheaper By The Dozen". Outside of this, I'm a fairly normal citizen. |
i watch them because it's interesting to see what people come up with, what things they consider horror and how they portray their ideas and put it onto the screen.
|
something interesting to do, esp when ur bored. good date shit
plus.. rain isnt fun unles theres sun. need good and bad, black and white, yin and yang. etc etc. take u out of ur day, adrenaline rush pump etc etc. |
i sort of remember the first horror i ever saw. i can't remember the name of it excatly. but it was about this woman called debbie,
and she was in dallas. and all these men kept on trying to kill her by stabing her in the face with these long white things. but it didn't kill her it only made her ill she kept on spewing up this creamy stuff. if anyone here knows the name of this movie could you please let me know what its called. thanking you in advance. wufongtan.. merry christmas:D |

Cheeba posts from a day or so ago : 1) MOTHERFUCKER! YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT, DO YOU? YOU WOULDN'T KNOW DRAMA IF IT WHIP KICKED YOU IN YOUR UGLY BITCH-ASS FACE. YOU AIN'T EVEN BEGUN TO EXPERIENCE DRAMA, MOTHERFUCKER. YOUR MAMMA, YOUR MOTHERFUCKING BIG FAT CHICKEN-HEAD ASS MOMMA, DONT EVEN KNOW ABOUT THIS DRAMA, MOTHERFUCKER! 2) No need. It was a joke. C'mon...I don't talk like that... 3) I couldnt find the one about how the person who merged a thread should stand by and watch their family get raped and murdered in front of them before it was their turn .. i guess it was deleted. yeah cheeba .. i understand exactly where you're coming from.... |

I think Cheeba has some sort of 'Jekyll & Hyde' split personality.... one day he's posting sensibly and tell others how they should respect etc, then another day he's acting like the devil himself and casting all rape, pillage and damnnation against the families of those that oppose him. kind of weird. |
1. To detatch from bland TV
2. Early age 3. Sexually aroused 4. The Blair Witch Project, 'Salem's Lot |
...and back to the original point of the thread.

see above answer.... at a pretty young age, maybe 5 or 6, mostly b&w horror that was classed as family viewing. It then progressed to more graphic stuff in my early teens... then onto more gore etc. Quote:

its funny that you said that .. i was actually thinking that having absolutely no sense of humor shows a definite lack of balance. Lack of balance is instability. So essentially that post did more damage in the very direction he didnt want it to go than the joke posts before it. i'm also confused as to this collective 'we' as in horror fans .. I dont feel dumped on for liking horror ? as a matter of fact i didnt think it was so cultish. Are we labelled by the fact that we watch horror movies ? i'm sure I'm not. not to mention the fact that i couldnt give a shit about what anyone thinks - strength of character will have that side effect. Judging from the little admonishment metted out to AMK for actually endorsing such irrisponsible behaviour i thought it was really a premeditated chance just to tell the mods once again that they were shirking their holy duties. I think he desperately wants to be a mod. |

that depends on the nature of the weirdness ... a 4 foot tall ladybug with blood dripping fangs, 3 human arms, wearing fuzzy dice and a tutu would be weird .... but i wouldnt want to pet it .. |

1. preferred drug; natural born movie addict, i just love horror. why watch some bland film when you can spend your time looking for the most fucked up shit that you have ever seen and test your limits.
2. been watching since my eyes were fully developed. my brothers and sisters always brought this stuff into the house and i just took to it from an early age. 3. why don't you tell us what you feel? horror isn't a narcotic; although some would say watching simulated murder happens to get some people's rocks off. one might say that murder is the most intimate of crimes since it is often considered very sexual for the agressor. Is this what you were trying to get at? 4. undecided |

peggy ann snow, peggy ann snow, i will follow, wherever you go ... I saw that film at the theatre .. great movie.. it qualifies as horror... If you liked that one ... check out another movie with a similar theme called 'Pin' I think it's Canadian so it might be hard to find. |
Why do you watch horror movies?
I enjoy the irony and creativity involved in a good horror flick. Also, fear is a rare emotion for me to feel, and i get a thrill out of experiencing it. When did you start watching horror movies? I saw Alien when i was 5. I pretty much avoided them from then until 12ish How do you feel when you watch a horror movie? A good one: Excited and entertained. makes me want to write. A bad one: Bored, angry. Makes me want to write. A better one. What is your favorite horror movie? Hmmmm.. There are a few, all for different reasons. 28 Days Later the Exorcist The Ring Dawn of the Dead (take your pick, i dont like either version better than the other) |
