Japanese Horror
In my opinion the Japanese make some of the most disturbing horror out there. I mean you have Ichi the Killer, Battle Royale, Versus, Evil Dead Trap, the Ringu movies, Another Heaven...okay...I hated that last one but other than that they have some of the best titles out there. What think you guys?

as far as Japanese movies go, the Kurosawas (Akira and Kiyoshi) are the best. Akira Kurosawa is far, far better IMO, but Kiyoshi Kurosawa does the best of the Japanese Horror (Kaïro has a pretty good spot on my top 50 list). Takashi Miike is good, too, but at times he goes too much for being weird or artsy or just 'out there' and not enough for entertainment. He's effective either way, Visitor Q did a good job of making me uncomfortable in a couple spots, but it wasn't entertaining. His best work was, again IMO, Ichi the Killer. Ringu is great, too. It is, like Paradise Lost, a placeholder for my top movie list (it was at 25, then 50. It's not on the list now, but if I took a movie off somewhere for whatever reason, it would temporarily get that spot). There are some great movies that I don't consider horror, but are close, too. Battle Royale is great, one of the best movies I've ever seen, and Versus, which could easily be called horror but has a kind of ingenious way of defying categorization, is almost the anti-Miike, in that it seems to aim completely away from being artsy or taking its self seriously at all, and goes straight to being awesome. A lot of movies are like that, but I've yet to see one do it as well as Versus.
Man, I just went all over the place there. Try and sort all that out if you want. There's a lot of BAAAD Japanese horror movies out there, too, but I chose to ignore them for now. |
Japs ROCK.....
nah but for real I fucking love japanese horror have been a fan of it for years... |
one thing that irks me....people seem to talk about movies from Japan like it's a genre. Not a big complaint, just a little thing that annoys me
|
after joing these forums, I've just got into Jap Horror, and I'm pretty impressed by the few that I've seen so far, Audition, Dark Water and Double Vision. There's quite a few on my list I'll be getting soon.... Versus and the Ringu films etc.

Jap Horror...the new way to look at horror!
With films like The Eye, Ju-on...Three coming out of Japan, the future of true horror finally looks brighter!
|
dark water, st john's wort etc...
|
St. Johns is a bit campy, but well done I suppose. the Phone is creepy. Watch out for the Pang borthers, they put out great stuff, Ringu...Ju-on.. Also, Suicide Circle was great

The Eye a Jap film? I like you your funny!:D |
I guess it ain't always too easy to recognize the country at first (I had some problems myself in the beginning) bu there is a truth to it. I would not say that Japan is the only one, but for us westeners who has grown really tired of the so called Horror movies (most of them only medicore Thrillers) that gets poured out of Hollywood, the entire Asian horror movie production has proven (in my opinion) to be an Eye opener... The first time in 15 years I have actually been scared by a movie was when I wached Ju-On the first time (In a dark room with lots of sound :)
There is just one thing I can't stand with it... Why the f''' can't Hollywood keep theire ugly hands off the good movies? They wreked Ringu, and here the other day I heared a rumor thet they are planning a remake of Ju-On!!! Pleas... Someone... Put that rumor to shame by telling me it isn't so!!! But, anyway... The asian horror movies rock (not only the japanese) Darkshade |
I'd like to get into more Asian produced horror movies, so far all I've basically saw was Audition and I thought it was great. It's really hard to find anything, even at Blockbuster all they have is Ringu and Ichi the Killer; none of which are the uncut versions :(.

The atmosphere of Ju-On is very, very creepy. The gohst are freaky and can apear when you least expect it, creating some excelent scares. The only downpoint I can think of (for some people), is the story. It`s not linear and very vague. Like in most asian horrors, you are expected to solve the puzzle for yourself and if you don`t like doing that, you can be very confused. But in all it`s just a great horrorflick 4/5 |

http://moviesonline.ca/movie_details.php?movie=Ju-On I will ask Luke if he can do a review of it, he is a HUGE asian horror fan and speaks highly of Ju-on. I myself have not seen it. Sorry i could not help much more. |
I rented Chaos about a couple weeks ago. That movie is so confusing. They keep going back and forth and back again. It's fine if you do it a few times. But doing it more than a few, it tends to get confusing. Took me a while to understand the movie. I had to watch it again, lol.
I want to watch the Ju-On movies before I see The Grudge so that I can compare and stuff. I've seen clips of the movie as well as the first 8 minutes of it on IFilm.com, and it looked real bad. The acting, sets, a lot of stuff. There's a scene in the beginning where the lady walks to this one house. Then she jumps when she sees the front of the house and they have that scary jump music. And it was just a regular house! Nothing to be scared of. It was so corny. |
Do you like Japanese Horror ?
What is everyone's opinion on Japanese horror ? I really like the movies that have been released in the last few years like the RING cycle, THE GRUGDE 1 & 2 and DARK WATER. I find the Japanese are very good at creating fear even without language.

I like the styles that they use mostly. Akward angles and long shots keep me aticipating for the next kill. The Ring was very good in the japanese version, but i liked the americanized one better. I feel that we bring more to the screen actor-wise this time. Though the ending was a lot harsher for the japanese one. I've always suggested to watch both, so that my friends could get both of the different endings.
|
I haven't seen alot of them, just Ringu and The Eye, but I thought both were excellent! Really want to see Dark Water but I can't find it. :(
|
I personally like the older asian movies better then the "New Wave" flicks wonder when this trend is gonna burn out?

ringu = suck
idk if its "japanese" but Mr. Vampire was pretty bad ass thats about the extent of my japanese viewing pleasure |
bah, I don't like to have to READ my movies, tyvm
|
Yup, I like Japanese horror. I love Takashi Miike's work. His _Audition_ is one of the best horror films I've ever seen.
Japanese horror comics are also great (as are some Korean ones). Junji Ito's work, especially Uzumaki, is better than any English-language horror being published right now. Sam |

I like Japanese horror, and a lot of the new stuff coming out of Asia's top! I loved Ringu and Dark water, recently saw Kairo too which was delightful. There are, however a few exceptions to the rule- I'm not entirely certain about Juon (the grudge) though... when I saw the previews I thought it looked absolutely terrifying, but the fact is, I just couldn't find a small child in blue make up frightening... it seemed to be somewhat taking advantage of the fact that absolutely any horror film from Asia will be a hit at the mo, and so it just took elements from all the other sucessful films and remixed them. Just my opinion, though! ^_^
The classics, like Kwaidan, etc. are excellent too! I recently got hold of a copy of Onibaba which I'm looking forward to with great anticipation- asia does ghosts with style! ^_^ |
