I would say yes and no at the same time, the biggest differences I think between the two is that gialli has a slower build up and less of a gimicky ending. Also, gialli often favors mystery over horror, despite the graphic blood shed, plus gialli rarely if ever have a sequel, and the sequel is damn near a characteristic of the slasher genre.

All the same, let it be clear, I love both styles and believe they are both worth anyone's time to investigate.

I suppose you could consider Twisted a modern non-italian Giallo.

you can't have a non-italian giallo as by definition giallo are italian.

There is sort of a neo-giallo though. A non Italian giallo, (but not a modern one) would be Pieces. There's the fetishistic violence, the same kind of cat and mouse game and even the ridiculous dubbing. I would say that all giallo are slasher movies, but not all slasher movies are giallo obviously. Non-giallo slashers have abandoned aesthetics, pseudopsychology and intense stylization, which are present in giallo. Wolf Creek would be a non-giallo slasher. As for a modern non-italian giallo, I can't think of anything but Seven really. It isn't territory too often touched upon directly in American movies, though I'd say Halloween has its share of giallo elements. It begins with a childhood trauma, the killer performs fetishistic acts of violence and many shots are done from the killer's POV. Not to mention the gialloish music.

Giallo are Italian thrillers......usually with ultra violence and explicit sexuallity.





I think slashers like Friday the 13th,My Bloody Valentine,The Prowler,Prom Night and Scream would be considered as giallo.....if they would have been made in Italy.:)

Yeah, but giallo also has this style- this ultra-bright, dreamlike style, that Bava and Argento so finely created- that sets it into its own little genre.

The murders are an art-form to the killer, not just a gory mess, but a "beautiful", serene-but-at-the-same-time-gruesomely-sloppy performance.

are the kills in the typical giallo always violent or is that an argento thing? would you say that the dirty harry movies are giallo or at least giallo inspired? what about silence of the lambs and zodiac and summer of sam?:confused: :confused: :confused:

Well, killings are always violent....;) But as I recall, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Argento's first, wasn't really all that graphic, I can't remember what the rating was.

Most of the crime/thriller novels in Italy during the 60's and 70's had yellow covers.....so people began calling Italian thriller films GIALLO.

I think the killer in Dirty Harry was inspired by the zodiac murders?
