The Shape Of Water

How this movie won best picture at the academy awards is beyond me. It bored the hell out of me and I gave it a chance but after an hour I gave up. It just couldn't hold my attention.

Prequel to the 1982 film of the same name. Researchers find a very old spaceship and it's frozen occupant.

I think the reviews at the time of it's release were a bit harsh, but certainly not incorrect. That is to say, it's not as good as the 1982 film, and it's much too light in exploring and featuring paranoia. Just when character paranoia heats up, the film is interrupted by more inconsequential action of the CGI, violence and explosive variety. The film is fairly action orientated, but not particularly good at it. It also misses the chance to explore the essence of the new lifeform, and the dire consequences of it's existence.

A fairly pointless prequel, reboot, or remake. I was watching it in the background On Demand recently. I think if you've never heard of the original The Thing you might think the 2011 version is a good movie. All the actors are fine in it. But there is the original which is a perfect movie.

Very true. I watched it with my undivided attention, and it's a mildly entertaining escape film. The cinematography is nice looking and effective. The general plot and setting are primo. So it's hard to screw this up. But both The Thing (1982) especially, and even Thing From Another World (1951), cast a long shadow over this film, and the fans were not happy with how shallow this was. And really, actor Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as Kate Lloyd, does such a great job, she saves this film... to the mild level it reaches. The film lost money (Budget: $35 mil, Boxoffice $32). As we see so often, it was a missed opportunity.
