Concussion (2015)
9/10 "In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play." Much better than I expected. There is plenty of drama in the real-life story, and Dr. Omalu is a fascinating figure, and Will Smith does a fine job bringing him to life. The story has much to do with conviction, values, self-sacrifice and hard decisions. King King (2006) Netflix 7/10 I don't want to give too much away... but a film, and merchant ship, crew discover a giant gorilla and bring it back to 1933 New York... and back in 1933 New York, they hadn't seen a giant gorilla, not even from the future. It's a mildly fun film, with mildly likable or hate-able characters. There's some nice big screen CG visuals, especially in New York, but basically every action sequence goes on much too long. The film runtime is 3 hours and 7 mins. I think the film would have been more enjoyable if it were cut more tightly. I did quite enjoy the first 40 or so minutes, which take place before the ship leaves NY... which is a good part of the film to nail; as we do get a fair handle on the main characters, and it pay dividends. I would consider King Kong (2006) as my least favorite film of that name, after King Kong (1933) and King Kong (1976). Kong: Skull Island (2017) was better too. |

Godzilla: Monster Planet (2017) Netflix 6/10 My pal Sven said this was good... Meh.mmmm..... not... mmm... can't say agree. This is an animated Japanese offering, and "Episode 1" is out, and it's 1hr 27 mins... on Netflix. It's really more of a sci-fi military drama. So it's like this... in the intro... giant monsters reek havoc... er I mean wreaks havoc on Earth, just as an alien race reaches Earth after a long journey from their destroyed planet. They want to settle on Earth, and offer to kill Godzilla, but they are unsuccessful! So they take the remaining Earthlings on their space ship and flee Earth. They get as far as Jupiter ::big grin:: and it takes a long, long time... and then collectively the Earthling and Aliens (who look like humans) decide to go back to Earth and see what's up. Well, I don't think I'm giving too much away when I say... some how... Earth has gone through 10,000 years, but the escaping ship only 40 years, or something like that... you know whatever, these guys must be rolling dice, or something else, so we'll just go with it. So they find there's still a Godzilla there, and through science and military, they are going to try to destroy it and settle back on Earth. It really comes off quite sophomoric emotional jingoism and rather science militaristic action, but not in a good way. There's not a lot "godzilla stuff" going on. |
Brawl In Cell Block 99
8.5 / 10 A lot crazier than the trailer led me to believe. One of the best flicks I've seen in a long time. No nonsense hard nosed old school crime film with a dash of Riki Oh thrown in. Vaughn totally kills it. |
