Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...vstheWorld.jpg Fantastic - magical - whimsical - I absolutely loved this movie. It's fast-paced, well-written, well-acted, and an absolute blast. Perfect from star Michael Cera to supporting actor Kieran Culkin. HIGHLY recommended. I want to own it. 4.75/5 |

Black Swan
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6..._poster_01.jpg Wow. Just - Wow. The words "stunning" and "mesmerizing" barely do this film justice. I had heard that this movie was getting rave reviews, but my raised hopes did not even meet how phenomenal this movie is. To tell you the truth, I was torn about Darren Aronofsky prior to seeing this movie - I found Requiem for a Dream to be incredibly bleak, but a piece of art in its own right. Pi I found interesting, The Fountain I couldn't stand, and The Wrestler was incredibly disappointing for me. But something that I can grant Aronofsky is that he is definitely a director with a distinct point of view, and every film has its own directorial style... Black Swan is no different - An incredibly intense slow-burner, this character-driven psychological thriller is completely different from Aronofsky's previous works, this time taking a page from Hitchcock. Black Swan is dark, deeply disturbing and passionate, truly a film that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Coupled with the striking backdrop of Swan Lake, this character piece is at times horrifying and breath taking. Quite frankly, I haven't seen Natalie Portman this astute. Ever. Hands down, this is the best movie of 2010. Best Movie Best Director Best Actress Hands down. Loved it. Go see it. Immediately. 5/5. |

I Sell the Dead
I just watched a movie called "I Sell the Dead". I laughed my ass off the entire time. It takes place in England and is set in the 1700 or 1800s, about a couple grave robbers, but they're not always robbing ordinary corpses. It's a great dark comedy, hilariously terrifying. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIQ-xcI1zKQ

... The Town http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...vie-poster.jpg I'm actually pretty upset that The Town wasn't wasn't up for Best Picture this year - I would say that The Town is my second or third favorite movie of the year (definitely second to Black Swan, though possibly third to Despicable Me, which just makes me incredibly happy)... Could be that I'm biased; I'm from the Boston area and get a certain delight from watching actors who can get the damn accent right (it's not just about dropping your R's, by the way)... Or it could be that this crime drama was a really thrilling character piece with characters whom I honestly cared about. Jeremy Renner is utterly brilliant (definitely deserves the Oscar nod), and Rebecca Hall is incredibly sympathetic. And I don't care what people say about Ben Affleck - While he may be limited, he's talented within his sphere. And apparently a great actor, too. I loved this film - I was on the edge of my seat, intrigued the whole time. Highly recommend it. 4.5/5. |

Big thanks to alkytrio666 for posting that link to Un Chien Andalou-I've been looking forward to that. Has anyone seen Bunuel's Leonor?
Just saw an australian film Loved Ones (2007). Think Misery directed by Sam Raimi but with teens. Be aware it is ultraviolent though and a difficult watch. |
Cropsey
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...rl/cropsey.jpg Fascinating documentary that explores the "truth" around the urban legend Cropsey, the alleged boogeyman who kidnapped and terrorized children in Staten Island New York, which transitions into the actual conviction and trial of Andre Rand, who was accused of kidnapping multiple children in the 1980s. Chilling and horrifying, the movie follows the families and friends who banded together to search for the missing youths as well as Willowbrook, the abandoned hospital that created the myth around the disappearances. There is some truly horrible, and sad found footage. Highly recommended. 4.5/5. |

Thanks for the rec, Sir! And this one is actually available on Netflix - Moving it to the top of the queue now. :D
P.S. You should really move to Boston so we can have movie nights together - Does your wife watch with you? Could we double-date? |

Anyway, I'd love to have movie nights with you guys...even sometimes I wish I could see some cool films with all of my great HDC friends here in a Drive-In theater. :) |
Evil Aliens-More a horror-comedy and stars the horror channel's Emily Booth-a UK film that is set in Wales-I recommend it because it is very entertaining straightforward fun-Not one to watch if you want serious horror so I guess it depends what you are in the mood for. However don't confuse fun with light hearted.

The Orphanage (El Orfanato) - It mixes horror/drama and excitement perfectly together. Really a great movie! 6/6
The Descent - One of the scariest horrormovies ever made imo. 6/6 Shutter (2008) - A good and scary remake, worth a watch. 5/6 the "Ju-On" series - Much scarier than the org. movies! 5/6 The Collector - SAW mixed with Cube, but more realistic. Great and exiting movie. 4.5/6 Urban Legend - One of the best "serial killer" movies. 6/6 |
Was thinking about this one today:
La rose de fer (The Iron Rose) (1972) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...gue/Iron19.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...oisepascal.jpg A terse, surreal, visually stunning horror film. Dream-like, with an impending sense of dread, Rollin's masterpiece unfolds intuitively, with the director's choices mirroring the bizarre, fascinating motivations of his characters. Or is it the other way around? |
Now that sounds like my sorta film will check it out.
Finally saw The Children it was utterly unoriginal however the dread and starkness of its relentless pacing makes it a winner. |

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...n_the_lane.jpg I don't know how much other people will enjoy this one actually (I've shown it to four or five people, and none of them cared for it) but I thought it was a really interesting little mystery film, with a very unique atmosphere. One of my favorites. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074806/ and... Fright Night http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...l28/fright.jpg One of the best horror films ever, in my opinion. It's just a really fun film, that's a total blast to watch. Roddy Mcdowall is also outstanding in this. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089175/ |

I haven't got my copy of The Iron Rose but I'll let you know what I think fortunato cheers
In the meantime I highly recommend The Mutations (1973) which stars horror stalwarts Donald Pleasance and Tom Baker. In terms of its side plot it doffs its cap to Freaks but its main plot is more along the lines of "organic horror". The two elements work really well together-a must see for any fans of Freaks.Plus on another level-the plant scenes are very surreal so it works very well as a visual experience. |
Jeremiah Johnson (1972)
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...924971020A.jpg *SPOILER ALERT* Jeremiah Johnson (Redford) is an American soldier who goes west to the Colorado mountains to escape the Mexican war, and become a mountain man. After learning how to live off the land, settling down and even forming a new family, Jeremiah is made to lead a search party by the US Army and trespasses on a sacred Indian burial ground. The natives retaliate by slaughtering his family, and he sets off to get vengeance on those who killed them. Directed by the great Sydney Pollack (who worked with Redford on several other great films), the movie takes on a very slow pace, with a minimal of dialogue. The breathtaking cinematography of the gorgeous landscapes are among the finest of any film. Highly recommend to everybody this under seen masterpiece. Scarecrow (1973) http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...ul28/scare.jpg Scarecrow is a phenomenal film. It boasts fantastic performances by Al Pacino and Gene Hackman (who are both at the top of their game), wonderful direction (most notably in director Jerry Schatzberg's use of long takes which fits this film perfectly) and brilliant writing with deep, complex and most importantly 'real' characters. Hackman plays Max, a recently released convict who dreams of moving to Pittsburgh to open his own car wash. Pacino plays Francis an ex-sailor who plans on going to Detroit to meet his child for the first time. The two become friends and bond while hitchhiking and in a manner similar to 'Midnight Cowboy' their odd realationship begins. The one and only complaint I have about Scarecrow is, sometimes the scenes were cut short a bit early. One scene in particular (I won't reveal as it is a major spoiler) could have had so much more emotional resonance had the director let it go on a tad bit longer. |
Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ssMeDeadly.jpg What starts out as a top notch, convention-bending film noir ends with a surreal, frightening, and apocalyptic climax. Absolutely incredible. |
|
Also this subtle UK spooky number
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071791/ Stars the inimitable Marianne Faithful and Penelope Keith. |

I've been trying to find a copy of Shockwaves forever now, sounds like an awesome film.
