Yeah I thought preacher was "ok", though never read past half way...not even sure where I got up to, somewhere around the vampires back-story I just got bored and dropped it.
The title "blood and water" for me, is the standard to which I hold most modern vampire comics, I really liked that...just 3 issues, and it was great.
Not that preacher was really a vampire comic, just had one in it.

Another long running series I could never get into was hellblazer.

TWD is cool, yeah...though the issues can be pretty short - where you at with that one issue-wise/storyline wise urg? Done "fear the hunters" yet?

Shade the Changing Man, vol. 1 - The American Scream, by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo

Online comic by Warren Ellis called FreakAngels. Post apocolyptic, steampunk, mind reading adventure. It's a lot different than the other Warren Ellis' I have read, and the art and colour is fantastic for a weekly comic. Trying to read a chapter a day to get caught up. So far, it is kicking my ass in a great way.

THANK YOU for introducing that to me. Psyched to read it.

...

Just finished Best American Comics 2010. Had some fantastic excerpts and now I need to buy the whole volumes:
  • Shortcomings by Adrian Tomine
  • Insomnia (Ignatz) by Matt Broersma
  • Skim by Mariko Tamaki

I like the character, but his adventures are pretty one note and usually just revolve around tricking some demon or another. I prefer him in Swamp Thing and Books of Magic.

cheebacheeba 02-14-2010 03:50 AM

Never really followed any of that.
I got my usual lot of comics...nothing great this week IMO...
One thing I liked seeing though was a promotion for upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man" comics of 2010, that kind of indicates they may be bringing the whole "Brand New Day" storyline to an end...I REALLY hope they can get this title back to what it was before all the changes.

ChronoGrl 02-20-2010 09:00 AM

Read the latest Walking Dead. Meh. I really feel as though this comic series leaves a lot to be desired.

Caught up with FreakAngels. I want more.

Scarebaby 02-20-2010 10:37 AM

Ooh, I recently bought the first collection of Walking Dead! Is it any good?

Honestly, it's more soap opera-ish than horror-ish... I'm disappointed with the series... But I keep reading it.

The art is great but the writing can be pretty bad.

Everyone else I know who reads it loves it, though, so you might too.

Brand New Day has allowed for a lot of changes back to a smarter kind of old school Spiderman. Read the recent The Gauntlet issues. It's gone back to Peter having trouble juggling his attempts to build a life and his superheroing. Though a lot of people say "why would Mephisto want Peter and Mary Jane not to be married?" if you think about it, this world is a perfect Hell for Peter. Kraven's family wants revenge, many of his old villains are stronger than ever, J.Jonah Jameson is mayor and he can't find a girl to settle down with. It's a nightmarish throwback to 60s and 70s Spiderman.

I'll look into it. If I like it that'll be swell and if I don't, I only spent money on the first few issues. :p

Doc Faustus 02-21-2010 08:19 PM

I just finished Jeph Loeb's Daredevil: Yellow. Good stuff. Daredevil is really underappreciated.

Post what you think! I'm always curious about how people feel about that series... Plus, the first few issues are the better ones, so you'll most likely enjoy those.

Reading Skim by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki. Loving it. Will need more graphic novel recommendations. Doc - Anyone?

P.S. Doc: Have you read The Squirrel Machine? Picked it up for the boyfriend and I think it's something you'll really dig... Haven't read it myself yet, but when I read the positive review in Rue Morgue I thought of you immediately.

Not really, it's among the more renowned DD minis.
I liked it too.

So if anyone wants to check out an interesting horror title with REALLY good art, check out FVZA (Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency)...sounds a bit silly I know, but I checked it out and really enjoyed reading it - and the art, as I said...just fucking awesome.
Pick it up, I'm sure the horror community will like it.

GothamUndead 02-25-2010 10:28 PM

I just picked up Choker #1, Irredeemable #11, Blackest Night #7, and Popgun Vol 4.

I am officially not interested in super heroes (main stream) outside of Batman, if you count him, at this point thanks to Blackest Night. I lost interest when I quit my job running a comic shop and now it's completely dead to me. I'll stick with my fantastic Dark Horse and Vertigo titles with some Image in there as well.

sgambino 02-26-2010 01:55 AM

You got Choker 1? They sold out before I got a chance! Lucky. Tell me how awesome it is.

GothamUndead 02-26-2010 04:15 PM

It was pretty awesome. A solid setup issue for sure. That sucks that your shop sold out. When I still worked at my shop I built up a pretty large Templesmith fanbase so there is never concern for their not being books of his on the shelf. So, it's not really luck, haha. :p

Dante'sInferno 02-27-2010 11:14 AM

The Silver Surfer issue 2.

Blackest Night runs really hot and cold. I'd be stoned to death on the Wizard forums for saying this, but I like Final Crisis better.

sgambino 02-28-2010 09:26 AM

Hack/Slash today...

GothamUndead 02-28-2010 10:13 AM

Haha, even though I hate Final Crisis as well I do enjoy it more than Blackest Night.

Also, sgambino, how do you feel about recent issues of Hack Slash? Tim Seeley is a friend, but I don't have the heart to tell him I've almost lost interest since the original artist left the book. :(

If you read FC all at once it's much better than reading the individual issues. Out of all the recent events, I think it's the best. Marvel seems to want to alienate me with all this brand x middle of the road Brian Bendis liberalism. Hey, Brian Bendis, I was wondering, is the government always right? Would you write three or four thousand comic pages about the Bush administration so I can find out? Event fatigue is killing me. I think the only good things on the stand are Batman and the current Spiderman run.

GothamUndead 02-28-2010 03:47 PM

Don't rule out Daredevil. Series was good with Bendis, better with Brubaker, and now it's still better than Bendis but not as good as Brubaker.

Doc Faustus 02-28-2010 04:27 PM

I haven't read any Daredevil lately except for a recent trade. It was pretty solid. Lady Bullseye was sort of a letdown, though.

GothamUndead 02-28-2010 07:06 PM

I expected more from that character than what we got. She seemed to be a background element more than anything. Hopefully, Kingpin will have some better plans for her.

Doc Faustus 03-01-2010 10:10 AM

I hope that series has an upswing. Marvel's been striking out so badly. I'm surprised at New Avengers. Such a good roster with nothing cool happening most of the time. I think they should add Human Torch, Moon Knight and Thor to the New Avengers and have Grant Morrison write it in awesome fashion.

Doc Faustus 03-04-2010 01:57 PM

Uzumaki volume 1. Awesome Manga.

LizLaceration 03-21-2010 02:44 PM

I'm reading Choker.

It has art from Ben Templesmith. The guy who did the 30 Days of Night artwork. I really love his stuff.

asoundmind 03-22-2010 06:17 AM

I'm reading Garth Ennis' The Boys and Crossed. Just bought a TPB of Hellraiser, but haven't had a chance to crack it open yet.

The Krell 03-24-2010 06:05 AM

Just finished the first three installments of The Molting by Terrance Zdunich.

Doc Faustus 03-24-2010 01:20 PM

Hellsing Volume 3

Doc Faustus 03-26-2010 07:48 PM

Petshop of Horrors Volume 3. Nice series, though plagued by redundancy.

iSeymore 03-27-2010 10:43 AM

Just finished reading "Friday the 13th volume one" Well, atleast it's supposed to be volume one. I also started reading the Gears of War: Barren story arc, it features on an Echo squad Sargent named Alex Brand, one of the only Female infantry Gears in the GOW Universe. :P I also recently finished reading Spawn Volume 3.

Doc Faustus 03-29-2010 03:27 PM

Petshop of Horrors volume 5.

QuisCustodiet 04-02-2010 07:02 AM

Somehow I skipped Kick-Ass when it first came out so Im getting caught up on that. Great series but I think the movie will water it down way too much. McLovin as Red Mist? Please.

I know right?
In the comic he was like the "older and cooler" kind of guy...and yes, I'd find it hard to believe they won't water it down.
If you've missed it, you should check out "sleeper". Nothing to do with kick-ass, but I reco it to just about everyone.

Just got done with the latest JSA - Since the last issue, they've been doing an "in the future" kind of storyline at the moment where superpowered neo-nazis have taken over the world and de-powered all the "supers", who they have imprisoned and are executing intermittently - an escape plan is being hatched.
I'm really enjoying it.

Read the last "Blackest Night" and here we go again with DC, leading right into another fucking crossover event. Give it a rest.

Nothing really great this week IMO, but I've a few left to go,m including the latest Incorruptible.

My girlfriend worked at a comic shop when that came out and she picked up the first issue. It was ok but it just didnt grab me enough to read more. Guess I should give it another day in court.

Weapon X 04-15-2010 08:28 AM

Deadpool Team-Up.

cheebacheeba 04-15-2010 09:25 AM

That particular DP title actually annoys me a little, it's just stupid for the sake of it...no continuity etc, the other titles are way better - wouldn't mind them a bit darker though (eg - blind al, the box, wade being REALLY fucked up, better villains again etc) anyways...

Brighest Day #0, was actually pretty interesting...Deadman...I'll be following this series, quite good so far.
