Evil dead 2

bwind22 02-27-2007 04:36 AM

2001 is a boring piece of shit. Evil Dead 2 by a longshot. It's about 500 times more entertaining.

The STE 02-27-2007 08:22 AM

Evil Dead 2 wins 8-4, next match in a second

Round 1: Match 10

Halloween
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Black Friday may have done it first, but Halloween did it better than anybody before or since. It had an almost Hitchcockian style in how it built suspense, not resorting to mindless "scares" where someone just jumped out of the side of the frame, a style that is apparently nigh impossible to duplicate. Decent to solid performances all around, especially an unnecessarily good performance by Nick Castle.

VS

March of the Penguins
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
There aren't a lot of blockbuster documentaries, but here's one of them. It's not an indictment of the president or an exposé on wrongly accused teens or an artistic filmmaking challenge, it's just penguins looking cute while Morgan Freeman narrates. The simplicity and how it works out is actually kindof admirable.

Although, I'm figuring on a lot of dead penguins in this one

Dante'sInferno 02-27-2007 08:54 AM

Aww poor penguins.

Halloween!

This was an unfair match. March of the Penguins is one of the most entertaining documentaries I've ever seen.

But, I mean, come on...Halloween.

The STE 02-27-2007 12:17 PM

alright, alright, I'll stop the mass penguin slaughter at 6-0. Next match in a second

Round 1: Match 11

The Notebook
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Real life pair Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams star in one of the most well-received romance movies in a long time. I actually haven't seen it yet, but I'm a big fan of both actors, especially Gosling.

VS

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
One of the three great westerns (along with Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch). Maybe not ALL westerns try to be The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but most do, and the rest should.

Ok, there's a match or two coming up that more than makes up for all these one-sided matches. Promise.

The_Return 02-27-2007 12:26 PM

Shame, I really did like The Notebook. Hate to see it knocked out so soon.

3-0 GBU

The Good the bad and the ugly

Dominion 02-27-2007 04:43 PM

I haven't seen either of them, so I'll wait until next round to vote.

Back to the Future
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...0d9ac010.L.jpg
Remember when Michael J. Fox was young and Chris Lloyd was funny? Those were the days, huh? A fun time-travelling movie where Crispen Glover punches a guy out.

VS

Kill Bill
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
The exact opposite of all these infulential movies in the tournament. Samurai movies, kung fu movies, spaghetti westerns, and exploitation movies all rolled up into one giant bloody violent epic. I don't distinguish between volumes one or two, since it was conceived as one movie. You can vote for a particular volume if you want, but the votes will still go to Kill Bill as a whole

jay o2 waster 02-27-2007 05:47 PM

DEFINENTLY.

Back to The Future

I liked Kill Bill, but Back to The Future was one of my favorite childhood movies, and one of the few that is still good.

_____V_____ 02-27-2007 08:34 PM

Havent been online in awhile so just read back through the pages and matchups...have to admit, great tourney with some shitass tough matches.

Like this one...Back to the Future has been one of my all-time fav movies...but...

Kill Bill, by a mere whisker, just cuz of Tarantino's visual brilliance.

The STE 02-27-2007 08:58 PM

6-4 Back To The Future. Next match in a sec

Round 1: Match 13

This Is Spinal Tap
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
To my knowledge, the semenal mockumentary, and rivals Holy Grail for quotability. Thuroughly original, well acted throughout, good music, and a cucumber wrapped in foil.

VS

Saving Private Ryan
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Highly acclaimed but unseen by me past the beginning, it does have one of the best war battle scenes I've ever seen.

bwind22 02-27-2007 09:10 PM

Damn, I probably woulda went with Kill Bill in that last match. I always prefered Back to the Future 2 over the original for it's cool vision of the future and those AWESOME hoverboards that we're still waiting for.

I'll go with Saving Private Ryan here. Spinal Tap's good, but I don't even know if I'd rank it as Christopher Guest's best work.
