Ghost Ship (2002): 9/10

I had seen this before, but it had been a while. I really love this movie, despite it being panned by the critics. I thought the story/premise was interesting. Additionally, I think the acting is rather excellent. It is not especially scary, but the ghosts are at least creepy. On that note, the special effects are pretty good too. Anyway, even though this film receives a lot of hate, I actually really enjoy it.

I can't remember whether or not I liked this whole movie, but the opening scene might be one of the best of all time.

Frankenstein's Army (2013)

Unfortunately, Worse Case Scenario never go made and that project morphed into this film but it'sstill a solid low budget horror movie. This 'found footage' horror follows a squad of Soviet troop plus a cameraman (making a propaganda film) behind German lines. They stumble on an old factory where a descendant of the infamous Baron Frankenstein is continuing his experiments in animating the dead - this time for the glory of the 3d reich. This brings about the film main Raison d'être, to show case the weird, wonderful and sometime ridiculous Nazi Flesh Golems. It a fun film and does well to hide its low budget despite some of the monster chase scenes remind me of Scooby Doo :-)

This movie had some very creepy moment that worked really with really good tense before some very gross moment and some of death scenes were really gory and very well done.

Low budget horror, done right. Some good scares and an interesting change of direction.

Recommend.

Wheew what a ride!

In this contemporary era of found-footage/zombie films galore, comes a film which serves a superb dose of nice, old-fashioned horror.

The makers have pulled out all the stops to make this as scary as possible, and it's a great thing. The film oozes atmosphere and foreboding unlike any film in recent times, and the best part is that the sense of creepy terror grabs you even in the day scenes.

I agree with Villain that it will feel like a mish-mash of several classic horrors of the 70s/80s (the film's events are set in 1971 so that's no surprise), but that's a factor which works for this film, and wonderfully well! There's some great background scores which help maintain the tenseness throughout, none more than the family theme which is composed by Mark Isham (fans of the man will instantly recognise his name at the beginning of the end credits). I loved the last 30 minutes, when it grabs the viewer by the scruff of the neck and pounds the horrors into his senses (unlike the Evil Dead remake which went from eye-roll to eye-roll in the final few).

I'll be first in line if they ever make a sequel to this one. Would love to know more about that very creepy doll - hope it gets a starring part in the sequel.

Highly recommended. Definitely getting the BD/DVD as soon as it releases.

P.S. - Don't watch it after midnight, specially if you live in a creaky, old house.
