Spirited Away....

crabapple 02-26-2007 07:07 AM

Hey, Toy Story was good and fun. Spirited Away was much, much more substantial and intense. And, uh, better.

well, well, a 5-5 tie. I'm too torn to vote, so the next vote wins

Round 1: Match 7

The Matrix
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
For better or worse, the shape of both sci-fi and action films today owe a lot of their style to The Matrix. Perhaps not the best action movie, but arguably as infulential on modern action as Die Hard was to the "classic" action movies.

VS

Office Space
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
In my opinion, the best office comedy (including TV shows) ever. A star-making performance by Ron Livingston, at least one memorable quote per scene, and the genius idea of that rap soundtrack all make this movie the sleeper little gem it is.

3-0 Office Space

The_Return 02-26-2007 04:38 PM

Even though it wasnt nearly as influential, Office Space beats The Matrix any day.

The Matrix

The STE 02-26-2007 04:54 PM

4-1 Office Space, next vote could end the match (assuming it's for Office Space)

Round 1: Match 8

The Thing
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
John Carpenter's remake of the Howard Hawks classic, though mostly just a separate adaptation of "Who Goes There?". Good perfrmances by Kurt Russel and Keith David, good special effects, heavy atmosphere and nicely ambiguous ending. And for the most part, the characters weren't stupid, so there's always that.

VS

Clerks
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
While it may not have been the first movie of its kind, most workplace comedies that take place in a non-office setting are compared to Clerks, mostly in a "pff, that's not nearly as good as Clerks" way. And with good reason. Look past the gruddy look and the rampant swearing, and you'll see some smart dialogue with almost a cinéma vérité look to it.

Dominion 02-26-2007 07:07 PM

The Thing.

The Thing

bwind22 02-26-2007 08:37 PM

Clerks. I think The Thing gets too much hype.

Despare 02-26-2007 08:43 PM

Clerks

I loved both movies but I have to give the nod to Smith's film here.

pinkerton 02-26-2007 08:49 PM

Clerks.....

i dont really think clerks was all that funny.
bezerker was awesome though.

Round 1: Match 9

2001: A Space Odyssey
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Long stretches of silence, very little in the way of coherent plot, ambiguous beginning, ambiguous ending, pretty antiquated in its views of what 6 years ago would be like, and one of the best movies ever made, probably THE best science fiction movie ever made. One of the few films I'd call "art."

VS

Evil Dead 2
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Not art. But a hell of a fun movie, and probably more influential than it gets credit for. A lot of fun, gorey, horror/comedies have tried to be Evil Dead 2, some have been better movies, but still, none of them are Evil Dead 2.

pinkerton 02-26-2007 10:02 PM

The_Return 02-27-2007 03:41 AM

I dont think anyone can argue that 2001 isnt the better film here, but it just isnt that enjoyable. Great movie, but I'll take Evil Dead 2 over it anyday.
