The witch only wanted to eat the children...Although, in SOME variations of the story, the stepmother was BOTH...But, in those renditions, the kids didn't kill her when they got home, cuz they had already killed her in the oven...So, when they got home, the dad was all alone...

In the original, the dad realized what she was up to WHEN- after the kids killed the witch and came back home...The stepmother saw that they were back, and not dead, and she wanted to kill them herself...The dad was protecting them by killing the stepmom...

At first, when they sent off the kids, the stepmom was crying, telling the dad that they had no choice, and that the kids might be found and adopted by someone that could feed them...She acted like it was the best thing to do for the kids...She even convinced the dad that if he REALLY loved his kids, he would do this for them, because he truly could not feed them, and didn't want to see them starve...

He knew something wasn't right when the kids came back, and the stepmom was majorly pissed and flew into a rage...

Hmmm... Interesting...
