Rubber -- 7/10; Relating to nonhuman objects is good mental exercise.

Angra 09-12-2014 04:48 AM

"Falcon Rising" 4-5/10

Forgettable action starring Michael Jai White.

"The Captive" 7-8/10

I would think this one is for fans of Prisoners. Good, but less violent.

"The Giver" 7/10

Started out as a Divergent/Hunger Games clone, but turned out to be more of a philosophical drama. To me the story was completely stupid, but the movie was actually very well made, and at the end i wanted to see and know more about the world i'd only seen a tiny part of. Pretty much the same way I felt after reading Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. I hope for a sequel, but i'm not so sure it will happen.

This was quite a weird watch. The entire movie was like a pilot to a very promising series. Like watching The Fellowship of the Ring not knowing if there would be any sequels. I guess only time will tell.

DrFrankensteinsGirl 09-12-2014 01:05 PM

Just got done watching Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow and am currently in the middle of Mars Attacks which I haven't seen since I was a kid. I guess today is as good as any to have a Tim Burton movie marathon. The Nightmare Before Christmas is next in the line up.

Damn Heathen 09-12-2014 01:07 PM

Static -- 6.5/10; Subgenre manipulation is at play in this film to provide a big albeit familiar twist. It is better than expected, and I suppose sentimentalists will eat it up.

I finally got around to watching Nightmare Before Christmas earlier this year. Interesting movie....

Wer (2013)
Thumb resize.

This was way better than expected.
Surprised I haven't read anything about this one.
Sure there's some typical dumb horror logic and an average ending, but overal this is a decent werewolf movie.
Would've been more interesting if they didn't give it away with the title.

Funny. I just saw a trailer for it a few hours ago on Youtube and decided to give it a try.

Haven't seen it yet tho, but definitely looks like one of the better werewolf movies.

An abnormally tall, hairy guy (with behavior disorder) mistakenly targeted as a werewolf!::big grin::

Yeah, it's one of those weird horror movies set in a world where the average person doesn't believe in mythical creatures and looks for a more rational solution.

Angra 09-13-2014 08:35 AM

"Honeymoon" 6/10

This is how you make a no budget horror movie without hand-held cameras.
A couple spend their honeymoon in a cabin in the woods... Cheap.

I think most people could do without the first 20 minutes of the happily in love newlyweds doing what happily in love newlyweds do on their honeymoon. We don't wanna see that? We want to see a happily in love newlyweds having a horrible time, that's what we'd like to see. And thankfully that's what we get the rest of the movie after the wife disappear some hours in the woods. Rest of the movie is one big question mark and contain one pretty damn gross scene.

I thought it tried too hard to be bad. The second one was even more desperate.

I didn't last long, ended up turning it off.

Now watching The Gravedancers

Damn Heathen 09-13-2014 12:00 PM

Demented (2012) -- 2/10; If this film had a crew that knew how to operate a camera, this could have been a passable Crazies ripoff. There are some tense moments. Do not watch if you can't handle dog deaths.

Me too! I loved all the movies from the first "Movies to Die For" collection. Hopefully, I'll have all of them someday.

Willow Creek (2013)
I expected more from this writer/director but it's basically Blair Witch Project with Bigfoot. He should have taken the Trollhunter approach instead.

Would someone who likes almost every found footage movie (i.e. me) like it?

I thought they did a good job at building suspense even if some of the scenes dragged on way too long but i was really disappointed in the ending.

It's pretty standard so I guess you will.

I was mainly disappointed because I thought the movie was too shallow.
Next bit contains spoilers so I'll put in in white
"The information they gathered was more centered about the old Bigfoot footage and should have been more about the creature itself. I think the only actual info they got was about the noise Bigfoot makes.
Then later on in the tent the main character says Bigfoot are known to smash wood together or something. Like where did you get that from?
It all felt a bit cheap to me.
And what the fuck was that naked women near the end?!"
Anyway, I still would love to see a decent Bigfoot movie.
Maybe an excursion into the woods with Native American guide, more folklore and some actual Bigfoots (or is it Bigfeet?)
"

Mulberry Street
Deaths of Ian Stone
Nightmare Man
Borderland
Tooth and Nail
Unearthed
Frontiers
Lake Dead

The only one I didn't like that year was Crazy Eight

Mulberry Street is pretty good - the director went on to 2 other great films, Stakeland and Cold in July. I though Borderland was excellent - based on a true story too.

Is Tooth and Nail the post apocalypse one with Vinnie Jones - in my opinion it wasn't up to much.

horcrux2007 09-14-2014 10:35 AM

Paranormal Activity

8/10

I've seen this before. What I like so much about this is the still shots that'll last for like a minute. Those can build an incredible amount of tension without resorting to lame jump scares or gore. The scariest part was without a doubt the last night. Definitely the best of the series.

The Battery (2012)
Starts out good but dumb and boring towards the ending.
Too bad. Acting, idea and execution were good.

I've watched it twice now and I want a copy to add to my collection. I'm a huge fan of IFC rentals at Family Video and they rarely let me down.

Very gory but humorously done.

Contains the catchiest hillbilly song i've ever heard.

You're Next (2013)

http://durnmoosemovies.files.wordpre...re-next-sm.jpg

9 out of 10 rating from me. This is just a great horror movie that combines suspense and fun. Think of Evil Dead mixed with Cabin in the Woods with a dollop of The Strangers. Loved it.

I agree!! I also loved this movie and it did remind me of The Strangers with a touch of The Purge. I think I may just have to add this one to my collection.
