The Exorcist

Bloof 12-07-2020 06:47 AM

The Exorcist

Alien is fantastic but leans more towards Sci-fi which is great but The Exorcist is straight- up horror. And I like it better.

I really need to see Exorcist seeing as it made it to the final round. I didn't think it would be on the same level as Alien.

It won the last tournament.

Still taking votes!!!

It's still close: 6-4... expecting another 4-6 votes for this...

Yeah, that's a big hole in your Horror experience. It's considered by most to be one of the scariest. Won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, among other awards and Oscars. It's streaming on Amazon. You can see it and update your vote.

It did? I think I missed that one. Was it last year?

I only barely remember seeing parts of Exorcist when I was very young. It probably scared me with the demon in the house. That's the only thing I remember from it.

I'm going to watch the whole series. I remember a reboot or maybe TV show with a character in the desert. The scene looked cool because I tend to like old religious stuff that turns up in the middle of nowhere.

.

No, it’s about 10 years ago, I think.

Tommy Jarvis 12-09-2020 04:25 AM

Maybe we could do this every year. For example with the stipulation that you can not nominate a film you nominated last year.

Unless I die, we'll start doing this every year, probably try to start Oct 1st.

What do you mean exactly when you said, "with the stipulation that you can not nominate a film you nominated last year"? You mean the same film can't win 2 years in a row? Or do you mean each participant can't nominate the same 5 or 10 films they did last year? Or you mean something else?

Last HDC Best Horror Film All-time was 2016, 4 years ago.

Very, very close... in dog years.

Bloof 12-10-2020 04:36 AM

I think he means more like the results will just keep repeating themselves. Maybe next October we could do something like " Best Werewolf film" or "Best Vampire film" or "Best Frankenstein film" , "Best Slasher"...that sort of thing.

It was the second thing. So if you nominated Poltergeist this year, you cannot nominate it next year.

That's a pretty good idea! Of course, we don't have to wait till Oct to do one of those as a tourney too.

Looks like we're not getting any more votes here... too bad Roshiq, Villain and Ferret didn't come back. So I'll soon be laying out how different/same things were this time compared to last.

Got ya. It's a logical idea. But I myself am a bit of a purest, in that I say let the real winner win, so to speak.

One change I made was having folks pick 10 films instead of 5. I think that made a big difference. Many lesser famous films made some impressive runs. Seeing those highlighted alone was worth it. There's probably a few ways to twist the tourney up a bit.

And the Winner of the 2020 HDC Best Horror Film All-time is:

Alien (1979)

https://johnkennethmuir.files.wordpr...06/alien11.jpg

Beating The Exorcist 6-4. Exorcist won the 2016 Tournament, over Alien.

Films Alien beat in the Tourney:
The Plague of the Zombies (1966)
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Quarter Final: Fright Night (1985)
Semi-Final: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Final: The Exorcist (1973)

This year the Semi Final Matches were:
Match 1. Night of the Living Dead (1968) -- Vs -- The Exorcist (1973)
Match 2. Evil Dead II (1987) -- Vs -- Alien (1979) -- Vs -- The Thing (1982)

Interestingly, all three Match 2 films were tied, which I had to break. Very close to choosing The Thing.

In 2016 the Semi Final Matches were:
Alien (1979) -- Vs -- Jaws (1975)
The Exorcist (1973) -- Vs -- Halloween (1978)
(And Alien beat Psycho in a pre-Semi-Final match)

Quarter Final Films:

2020 ..................................................2016

Night of the Living Dead (1968) ..............Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Alien (1979) .........................................Alien (1979)

The Shinning wasn't even selected this year. Evil Dead II, Suspira and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) made big advances this year. Carnival of Souls also made a big showing. Predator was very popular, and wasn't even the tournament last year.

In 2020 these films were the top seeds, that is, films that were chosen by more than one person in the lists of Top 10s:
4 Evil Dead II (1987)
4 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
3 Alien (1979)

2 The Exorcist (1973)
2 The Thing (1982)

2 Insidious (2010)
2 The Lost Boys (1987)
2 Friday the 13th (1980)
2 Carnival of Souls (1962)

Thanks to everyone who participated!

That was a good tournament. A lot work put in with all the images and tracking votes. Next year should be interesting. I'm glad one of my favorites won in the end this year.

Tommy Jarvis 12-12-2020 11:33 PM

A fun tournament and I got to add a few films to my watchlist.

Big tanks to sculpt for all the work.

And congratulations to Ellen Ripley and Jonesy.
