"Dead Men Walk" (1943)
-George Zucco, Dwight Frye Plot: IMDB The twin of a kindly small-town physician returns from the grave as a vampire for vengeance against his brother, who secretly killed him because the twin served Satan. Phantom's Review: Very low budget attempt to replicate Universals style of film. George Zucco does a credible job as both brothers and Dwight Frye basically redoes his "Reinfield" character. Other than that, this film has very little to offer. |

One of my favorite films to watch this time of year. An incredible classic; Tourneur's direction is as good here as it ever was. |
The Tingler & House of Wax.
A beautiful night of Price! |

"Cry Of The Werewolf" (1944)
Plot: IMDB Young woman raised by gypsies is actually daughter of a werewolf. She starts killing those who know about her. Phantom's Review: Dull, horribly acted attempt at a werewolf film. The lead actor has the acting range of a wet towel. The transformation scenes are done off camera and the "Werewolf" is pretty much just a big dog. Truly lousy. -- |

love House of Wax |
A fun double feature:
1) "Gorgo" (1961) Plot: IMDB A salvage vessle is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo's mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path. Phantom's Review: Entertaining imitation "Godzilla" Interesting story, decent FX and a cool looking monster. Lots of fun. 2) "Mad Monster Party" (1967) -Boris Karloff Plot: IMDB When Dr Frankenstein decides to retire from the monster-making business, he calls an international roster of monsters to a creepy convention to elect his successor. Everyone is there including Dracula, The Werewolf, The Creature, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and many more. But Frankenstein's title is not all that is at stake. The famous doctor has also discovered the secret of total destruction that must not fall into the wrong hands! Phantom's Review: a Halloween treat for the whole family. You have horror legend Karloff as the voice of Dr. Frankenstein and some entertaining animation from the Rankin-Bass Company. One of my favorites. |
I also just watched Cry of the Werewolf, but unlike our Phantom friend, I enjoyed it very much. A poverty row approach to a werewolf story, complete with a noirish group of cops, and the luminescent Nina Foch as a Gypsy princess. Not a great film, but a different look at the classic werewolf tale, taking a Lewton-like approach to storytelling. Also features character actor Fritz Lieber, father of the great science fiction writer.
Also recently saw Gamma People - a delightfully goofy, tongue in cheek British sci-fi film, another that deals with their peculiar obsession with schoolchildren being mutated and used for nefarious means. |

Great eerie low budget horror.

"The Black Room" (1935)
-Boris Karloff Plot: IMDB Prophecy has it that younger twin Anton will kill brother Gregor in the castle's Black Room. Anton returns to the castle after a 10 year hiatus. Gregor, a Baron, has many attempts on his life as his subjects detest his tyranny. However, good natured Anton earns the subjects' respect, and the admiration of Col.Hassel, uncle of the beautiful Thea. When Gregor kills young servant Mashka, his subjects storm the castle to remove him. Devious Gregor renounces his title in favour of brother Anton to appease them. He then kills Anton to assume his identity and the Baronship again. He is free to pursue Thea with Col.Hassel's blessing. When Col.Hassel discovers Gregor's impersonation, he also meets death. With Thea's true love, Lt. Lussan, wrongfully convicted of Hassel's murder, it appears nothing can stop evil Gregor from ambushing her into marriage. But what of that prophecy? Phantom's Review: Twice the Karloff..Twice the joy of seeing a truly great actor work. One of his best films, creepy, atmospheric and wonderfully acted. This is a classic thriller. |
"The Land Unknown" (1957)
-Jock Mahoney Plot: IMDB On a naval expedition to Antarctica, three men and reporter Maggie Hathaway crash-land in a crater 1000 m below sea level. There, they encounter steamy tropical forest, dinosaurs, carnivorous plants, and human footprints, as Maggie's clothes become more and more abbreviated. Phantom's Review: Fun, corny sci-fi "B" movie. Former stunt man Jock Mahoney is fine as the heroic lead. Plenty of action and some half way decent dinosaurs. If your expecting a "Jurassic Park" style of FX, then forget about it , but if you enjoy these great little monster movies from the '50's then sit back and have some fun. -- |
"Curse Of The Undead" (1959)
-Micheal Pate, Eric Fleming Plot: IMDB western with a twist: mysterious gunslinger-for-hire Drake Robey is really a vampire, and it's up to Preacher Dan to save the town and girlfriend Dolores Carter. Phantom's Review: A Halloween staple for me. While this is definitely a "B" movie, I absolutely love this film. Very underrated in my opinion. I'm a devoted fan of both westerns and horror and whenever the two genres meet I'm interested, unfortunately most of the time when this happens, it's pretty bad (remember "Billy The Kid Vs Dracula") but this time they got it right. Western vets Eric Fleming and Micheal Pate do good jobs as the town preacher and the black clad mysterious gunslinger. Some spooky music and a lot familiar faces in the supporting cast make this a little gem -- |
The Red Diary Murders (1964) & The Spooky School for the Wayward Girls (1969) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...jidhdc/BBL.jpg http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...sidencia69.jpg |
"Godzilla, King Of The Monsters" (1956)
-Raymond Burr Plot: A 400 foot tall fire breathing radioactive monster rises from the ocean and precedes to stomp Tokyo to shit Phantom's Review: First and arguably, the best in the long running series. Even the American re-edited version is great to watch. Beautifully filmed, excellent miniature FX and, of course, the coolest giant monster in history. A classic -- |

Since today is Halloween (have a happy one everybody) there's an embarassment of riches on various TV and cable channels. So I will forgo my usual Reviews today and just list what I'm watching. (besides. we've all seen these films anyway) So here goes:
Creature From The Black Lagoon Dracula (1931) Son Of Dracula The Mummy (1959) Son Of Frankenstein The Reptile The Gorgon Village Of The Damned Night Of The Living Dead Curse Of Frankenstein |

The Evil Of Frankenstein
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058073/ A Hammer movie that was distributed by Universal so they had the green light to use the likeness of the original. They should have stuck to their own vision. The monster looked pretty foolish. The only saving grace was the usual atmosphere of the Hammer movies and of course Peter Cushing. |
I watced an old Roger Corman flick a couple nights ago, The Day The World Ended. It wasnt bad, it had a fairly good story line and the acting was good, but the mutant monster was a hoot. Some one on here described a monster as looking like a big turd, this one looked like a big turd with too many arms. Funny as hell.

Voodoo Woman.

Whatever happened to Baby Jane. Not what I expected but I liked it.
|
Lost Horizon-This was astounding-a group of people avoiding war in China crash land in Tibet and are led to Shang Ri La-all round great performances and the mystique of the film is maintained drawing you right in from the start. Granted it was a bit predictable being all metaphorical and allegorical but I was gripped nonetheless.

The Torture Chamber (1967, starring Christopher Lee)
IMDB has this listed as "The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism". |

Cash on Demand (1962)
http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...idhdc/COD1.jpg Worth watching for Cushing's performance alone; specially a must see for his fans. >>: A- In Cold Blood (1967) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...jidhdc/ICB.jpg Direction, lighting, script & story progression as well as performance of the cast...all were Excellent! Instantly becomes one of my all time favorites. Just after first 10 to 15 minutes, I suddenly recognized the actor (Scot Wilson) playing Richard 'Dick' Hickock...hey! that's Dr. Hershel Greene from The Walking Dead! :) Thanks a lot to NE for the recommendation. >>: A |
Hey - good call. I didn't realize that was the same actor.
|
Bride of the monster..fuckin loved it,liked how the monster was bascically a fat bald guy:D
|
Lugosi is amazing in that film.

Island of Lost Souls (1933)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...flostsouls.jpg Now that Criterion has released an incredible version of this on DVD and Blu-ray, everyone should go out and grab it. I hadn't seen this in ages, and the last time was off a crappy VHS. Truly one of the best and most startling horror films of the 30s, with some incredible make-up and a truly disturbing message. Laughton's performance is chilling and unhinged; really, the whole film is that way. Obviously, highly recommended. |
Caltiki The Undying Monster (1959)-Italian creature feature based on a mexican myth about the Mayan Goddess Caltiki. Excellent suspenseful first half then builds to a flamethrowing carnage finale.
|
Peeping Tom (1960).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054167/ I expect this caused a storm 50 years ago. But today it seems tame. Still a good movie though. 6/10. :) |

But it's still a very scary portrayal of a psychopath who specialises in despatching prostitutes in the most sadistic and violent manor. |

The Blood Beast Terror from 1968.
I know it's loathed by some but I still give it 6/10. It's creaky, it's old and it has Peter Cushing. ;) |
"Fantastic Voyage" (1966)
-Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch Plot: IMDB Scientist Jan Benes, who knows the secret to keeping soldiers shrunken for an indefinite period, escapes from behind the Iron Curtain with the help of CIA agent Grant. While being transferred, their motorcade is attacked. Benes strikes his head, causing a blood clot to form in his brain. Grant is ordered to accompany a group of scientists as they are miniaturized. The crew has one hour to get in Benes's brain, remove the clot and get out. Phantom's Review: Slow moving, but highly entertaining sci-fi adventure. Interesting story, good acting and Oscar winning special FX, and , of course....Raquel Welch, the most gorgeous woman in movie history. A really good movie. |

The Gorgon (1964) rewatched this hammer film and actually enjoyed it even more this time round (thank you V!) I also love that it gives a different gorgon sister airtime instead of medusa (I love all three regardless) for a change.
