Hold That Ghost is another good Abbott & Costello film for October viewing.
|
It's a dark and rainy day and it's October....perfect day for a horror classic:
"Son Of Dracula" (1943) -Lon Chaney jr Plot: IMDB Count Alucard finds his way from Budapest to the swamps of the Deep South after meeting Katherine Caldwell, of the moneyed Caldwell clan that runs a plantation called Dark Oaks. She's obsessed with occult matters. Who better to guide her through this supernatural world than Count Alucard, whose name no one bothers to spell backwards? No one, that is, except the wily Dr. Brewster, an old family friend. He'll join Professor Lazlo, a specialist in the occult, in fighting this "Alucard" and the woman he's influenced. Or has Katherine influenced him? Meanwhile, Katherine's fiancé, Frank Stanley, will find his courage and his sanity sorely tested when he accidentally shoots Katherine to death, yet finds that she goes on living. Phantom's Review: Probably my favorite among the Universal Dracula sequels. Clever script. very atmospheric and stylish. Very much like a film noir. Chaney Jr does a fine job as the title character and all the supporting players are quite good. One of the greats. -- |

Ive got to find that Curse of the Crimson Altar. Its got one hell of a cast. I found a copy of Bride of Frankenstiein in one of the local video stores a couple days ago. Great show, the best of all the Frankenstein movies.

Just watched Psycho again the other day - one of my all time favourites.
I got completely into the story and found it very scary. When i first watched it in my teens, i never found it that scary - being into all the blood and gore films at the time, so old films like Psycho seemed tame in comparrison. But having watched it several times since, and with getting older, not liking the gore films so much, when i revisit an old film like this i realise how frightening it is. It must have been incredible to have watched this film on its original release. Only knowing it was a Hitchcock film and going along for a look. You get into the story of Marion and her theft - will she get away with it? Is that cop on to her? The terrific tension caused by Bernard Herrmann's score. Then it seems she has changed her mind, after a talk with the young man at the motel. She's going to take the money back. And then... wham!! It must have scared the hell out of audiences at the time because though you feel things aren't quite right, you would never have seen that coming. A classic film as frightening now as it was 50 years ago. |

Seeing the screenshots above - why has there never been a special edition dvd of The Curse of Frankenstein?
It would have been ready made for a commentary with the late Jimmy Sangster - as per on other Hammer titles. Sadly this can't happen now, but still a commentary with an expert like Marcus Hearn or Wayne Kinsey would be very good. |
After watching Hammer's Dracula Lee Movie Marathon last weekend, this time planning to have a Hammer's Frankenstein Movie Marathon...back to back in coming weekend.:)

I watched "Creature from the Haunted Sea" this weekend. lmfao it has one of the ugliest monsters known to man. looks like a big turd. I love this parody film.

"Frankenstein Created Woman" (1966) The Fourth foray into the Hammer Frankenstein series. The Horror Channel showed the version with the restored Beheading scene so that was very interesting to see (especially as even with that scene the film is still rated PG lol) and I was very surprised that there was such a decent tragedy type story to it.

The Curse of Frankenstein
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...100214317_.jpg I really enjoyed this. Great story, the monster looked really cool and the acting was excellent. |
Cushing is great as Dr. Frankenstein. One of his greatest roles.

Horror Hotel (AKA City of the Dead - here in the UK) is a great little known horror with a very eerie atmosphere.

And like Chief Brody said, it might actually be easier to find under the title City of the Dead. |
Back to Back Hammer's Frankenstein Movie Marathon
The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/...Collection.jpg Frankenstein Created Woman (1966) Frankenstein Must be Destroyed (1969) Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974) It's been an awesome holiday to watch all of them one after another. |
That's quite a marathon!

All great films apart from the last one. I just hated everything about that film when i saw it. Such a sad end to a great series.:(

Dracula from 1931.
Not as good as Frankenstein, imo. Particularly since the film's lack of scoring is particularly notable (in the early days of sound in film, films were left with little to no music as it felt it would confuse the audience) but I thought that the sequence where Dracula and his brides rise from their coffins the first time, in near silence, was actually pretty eerie. |
