when scream first came out it was great, some what shocking, and when compaired to other feature horror films of the time quite brutal. wether you like it, love it, or hate it it helped breath life back into mainstream horror.

and please dont bitch thats just my opinion.

Ok, I just need to comment on this. Now, I havent seen Scream, as Ive mentioned a few times around here. Looks to be a fairly decent film, I saw the last 10 minutes or so on TV. It's effect of the horror genre, however, is legendary. Helped breath life into it? How about helped create a half-assed, self-aware ressurection of the slasher genre? If by "helped breath life into it" you mean the quantity of horror films influenced by it, you have a point. However if you're saying the films that it influenced brought quality to the dying genre...if that's the case, I have nothing more to say to you.

Scream on its own ... was an entertaining fanboy homage to the 80's slasher film. It had fun with it.

UNFORTUNATELY it did resurrect the genre..intentionally or not.

i somewhat agree urgeok. I think it resurrected the genre, but it resurrected the GOOD part of the horror genre, with the good films, unlike the shit we see today.

The first was excellent, the second was just alright, the third was pretty good.

Urban Legends
Urban Legends: Final Cut
I Know What You Did Last Summer
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
Nine Lives
Valentine
Cry Wolf
Soul Survivors

These are the type of films spawned from the Scream trilogy.

Good?

I enjoyed Urban Legend for what it was. It wasn't anything special, but there are much worse films.

I also somewhat enjoyed cry wolf, I don't care about all the hype about it. It wasn't THAT horrible, and I enjoyed the ending, then the extra part of the ending where you really found out what was going on. The aol idea was kinda neat, and I admit the acting sucked and so did the gore and stuff, but it was a kind of slasher-lite treat for once. The i know what you did... movies are some of my least favorite movies ever, fuckin... terrible... The idea was cool, and it couldve been great if it was done at least 1/5th decently... Never seen valentine.

Urban Legeds had, if nothing else, a good concept. Wasnt executed all that well, but it was a great idea for a slasher.

EDIT- Stupid typos...

I liked (and still do) the first Scream film a lot.
Sure, it borrowed relentlessly...but that was it's whole deal...behind that, I think they managed to string together a pretty decent plot, and some good twists, and a suitably menacing faceless killer.
It was funny, had a few extreme stereotype characters...and some that were just begging to get killed. Not to mention the whole "plot" that revealed itself over the last 20 minutes of the film, I loved that...and that the killers ended up being completely incompetent fucks in the end, their plan makes me laugh every time I watch it, but I have to admit, the first time I saw it, I thought "coooool".

The second was not too bad...had a few nice kill scenes, but seemed to have been more a cash in than anything, in the end. I still enjoyed it upon first viewing, and I liked the dialogue...as a sequel, it was "ok", no problems here.

The third one, I simply cannot enjoy, and I've tried to watch it around 3 times...the killers motive was so fucking water-thin, it's like they were just looking for any possible way to have yet another person want to kill sidney...seemed like every character in the series either got killed off or became an asshole. None of the fun of the last 2 films.

As for the "clones" that came out...I didn't mind the FIRST "I know" film, although I hated just about everyone in it. I think it had a slightly deeper plot, and a more scary atmosphere.
The sequel was complete shit, the first urban legend was ok up until the last half hour...the sequel to that, also shit..I understand there's a third film in the series now....don't know if I'll ever see that. Valentine...now there's a REALLY shitty film.
The rest aren't really noteworthy IMO.

The scream 3 killer was apparently the killer from every scream, or at least the first, if you understood it correctly. It seems like the point they tried to make was that HE was in charge of the idea for the 1st killers in scream 1, and just didnt happen to be there, like he organized it. In scream 3 they find there was a 3rd killer, and it was him, and it made perfect sense to me. He didn't try to blame the movies or peer pressure, he just wanted his sister dead, and i couldn't think of a better explanation than that. I think it was the perfect slasher trilogy, everyone had twists, it was random and fun, easy to watch too. Scream 3 was just weird, cause neve campbell wasn't in it as much.

Q: Who would be considered the most pretentious - Wes Craven (Scream) or Stanley Kubrick (2001)?
