I think it is your drivers, rather than the soundcard. My soundcard is onboard as well but, does show up in the device manager.
If you search google on "no sound device", it should give a some forums with possible answers, though looking at them, most seem to indicate driver problems. sorry I couldn't be more helpful re: no secondary HD, sounds like a BIOS problem, or perhaps a partitioning (Hard-drive) problem. |
s'all good, I'll follow up....
|
motherboard drivers (chipset)
control panel>admin tools>computer management>disk management that should show up whatever disc are present. if it does not show the 2ns physical disc, check the bios to makes sure that it finds it. if the bios shows it, then might be drivers (chipset will sort that) |
Thanks zwoti...I did what you said and a couple of other things, and the disk is now being recognised and at the moment, formatting.
Still having issues with the sound...just not sure what to do. I've determined that I don't have a soundcard...it's onboard sound. But, at this point I'm stuck. I tried getting the reccomended ac97 driver thing, but that didn't work either. What's a soundcard worth? Are they worth getting? I mean I've always been happy enough with the onboard sound, I'd just like it to work. ...Why the standard pc/windows can't have some kind've internal scanning application that says what you've got and what's needed to make it work, when it's not working...is beyond me... |
Start --> Control Panel --> Add Hardware
Let it scan your comp for stuff which hasnt been installed yet, and when it shows up, put in the software installation CD/DVD of the motherboard which came with the machine and point it to the Drivers/Win XP folder of the disk. It should pick up the driver. Or else, autorun the CD/DVD and install it from there. If you havent got the installation disk, then let me know. |

I have aida32 on my pc (free to download and run, googling it will find several places, offering it). This will give you an idea of what's "inside" your pc, software/hardware etc. This could identify the problem. One question though (excuse me, if this sounds stupid) I am assuming you had no problems with sound before you formatted the hard- drive, your speakers are working etc... You can also try Start, Run, enter dxdiag in the space provided. A screen should appear with headings at the top. Click on 'sound' tab, this should give 'device name' ie what-ever plays your sound, card, driver etc. There is a test directsound box, click on it. You will be asked if you can hear anything. A small screen underneath will tell you if the test was successful or not - hopefully yes. You can also try the 'music' tab. Another box should be present, with a list of devices - with the words "test using this port" above it, there should be a test directmusic box underneath it. Click on the items on the list, then 'test .....' box. Again you will be asked if you can hear anything. A box underneath will show if the test was successful or not. I had a similar sound problem before as well ie I couldn't hear anything. Trying to remember how I fixed it. (Didn't need a new sound card anyway, that's for sure) |
computer cookies question
i have a traking cookie in my computer called "liveperson" should i be worryed that im being stalked or some thing. is it literaly a live person?

Download AdAware and Spybot and run them both just to make sure it's not part of a spyware thing.
|
It should be ok, if you have sometjhing that detects it, then it should be able to remove it, does it?
|
Yeah spybot is good, if that doesn't work let me know, I had a similar problem a while ago and have a long list of free ware virus removers......

|
can't you just deleat them as well hu hu ha...........
|
lol yeah but im hopping i get to tell them off i love doing that to ignorant dull men/
|
This is a "tracking cookie", just delete it if you don't want it on your system.
LivePerson is a company that makes chat/electronic communications programs. It is not an individual stalking you online. |
thank f%%k god. i can be calm now lol
|
No problems.
No need to get worried about that one. You should still run antispyware software from time to time just to make sure your computer is clean. Antispyware software will often report tracking cookies (eg spybot s&d and adaware) and give you the option to delete them. Basically these cookies can track your browsing patterns because they are present on several sites on the web (ie where the company in question has a banner or linked content) so they can build up a "profile" of your browsing which they probably could use for market research etc. But it's not like a spyware infection that will slow down your computer or steal your passwords or anything like that. |

Anyway...here's your answer - Solution 1 - "Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes. Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore." Solution 2 - "We first need to stop unnecessary (possible s*yw*re) running at start up. Click Start > click Run and type in "msconfig". Click on the Startup tab. http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ uncheck everything there except your antivirus, firewall and internet connection if you see it there. Click ok and restart. when your computer reboots you will get a window which says you have made changes to the system configration utility, then click on "do not show this message again" B] We now need to clean internet explorer of possible s*yw*re. And security exploits. Open your internet explorer Under the general tab click on 1) Delete cookies 2) Delete files 3) Click on settings (next to deleted files ) and the click on "view objects) . Delete all the objects listed there (these are plugins which is come back when you visit the site like flash) This will get rid of any s*yw*re tool bar and malicious activex controls 4) Click on clear history Click on the security tab 1) Click on the Internet icon and click default level 2) Click on the Local intranet icon and click default level 3) Click on the Trusted sites and click default level 4) Click on the Restricted sites and click default level Click on the privacy tab and click default Click on the programs tab and click reset web settings Click on the advanced tab and click restore defaults. Click your internet explorer and reopen it. C ] Run the essential s*yw*re removal programs 1-5 .This is to clean the whole system of s*yw*re and viruses, which would hijack internet explorer. 1. Download and run firefox to protect your from future attacks and pop ups which are coming in through internet explorer. Then update your windows through firefox http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogsp...ssentials.html 2. Run the sdfix and vundo and combo fix http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogsp...combo-fix.html 3. Run the anti s*yw*re remove programs spybot and superantis*yw*re to get rid of the nasties http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogsp...yw*re-and.html 4. Run a free online virus scan to be sure you computer is virus and s*yw*re free. http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogsp...irus-scan.html 5. Get the clean up tools to clean up the s*yw*re from your temp folder (the place they are stored when downloaded by internet explorer) http://securitynewsfromthenet.blogspot.com/2007/03/clean-up-tools-to-prevent-people-from.html" Solution 3 - Here are some links to s*yw*re removers: Ad-Aware 2007 Free - http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10695895.html Spybot Search and Destroy - http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10401314.html Look here for some information on s*yw*re + more removers: http://www.download.com/s*yw*re-Cent...-2023_4-0.html I hope these help!" |
I like SPYBOT S&D
|
Spybot S&D
Adaware Windows Defender seem to be the three popular free ones. It doesn't hurt to install all three and run them all. It's not like antivirus software, where you should only have one installed. Also, could download Kaspersky antivirus and install the 1 month free trial. This also detects malware, trojans, etc. and may be helpful. After you have cleared this, do as ___V___ said and use Firefox instead if IE (if you aren't already). It will stop a lot of infections just by using it instead of IE. Make sure you have an anti-virus installed - AVG or Avast are reasonable free alternatives. At the end of the day, when you have a lot of spyware on your comp, it can be really hard to get it completely clean. If you have your original Windows disc and applications discs, sometimes it is quicker just to back up all your data (photos, docs, music, email, etc) and reformat/reinstall. That way, you have a fresh system that you know is completely clean. However, if you don't have the discs for everything, this doesn't work. |
i'll admit to a devilish impulse to making a thread in general forum entitled sqy vare (with the right spelling) just to screw with MD - but then my conscience got the better of me -- - damn that conscience.

Burning Software
...Any ideas of something I could download?
Of course, free would be the preference. Just looking for a good cd/dvd burning app that can handle multiple file formats and extensions, data and video burning available. So, any ideas/links? |
I am using Nero 7.2 Pro. If you are looking for a free one, I d suggest BurnOn. Its fast, hassle-free and supports all formats.
If you are looking for conversions before burning your shit, then ConvertXtoDVD. |
Thanks, I got it...
I'm having a bit of trouble though, in terms of how to use it for what I'm after. Do you know what steps to use, to put .avi or other divx related files onto a playable DVD, eg, not a data one? Thanks. |
It should have a PDF file explaining how to do it.
Try downloading from here, Cheebs :- http://www.burnworld.com/burnoncddvd/ It basically converts all recognisable formats into 1:1 mode. |
Help to fix this SHIT...
More pc issues...well, had this for a while, but thought I'd give it a go to fix.
WMP has stopped playing all kinds of video files, and I don't know why. Music is fine, just not video. To start, I have downloaded the latest version of wmp, and same deal. A window comes up when I try to play a (.avi usually) file, that says "wmp encountered a problem while trying to play the file, please click web help for assistance" Then I get this page when I click it, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...nalid=80040241 I've followed all the instructions there, and my "sound device" is working fine, fully updated. The files arent corrupt as I've burned them off before and managed to play them from dvd players fine, also nero (when I had it) played them. So, any fixes aside from a complete reformat here? |
Try downloading a codec pack, that could clear it all up, or you could just get Divx, Bsplayer, or Media Player Classic, because WMP just isn't that good, Or winamp, if your going for the features you get from WMP
|
I am guessing the compatible video plug-in for WMP is either corrupted or gone.
Sometimes WMP tries to access other video plug-ins to play a video, like for example, Nero's Showtime plug-in. Either way, I think you need a plug-in/codec pack for WMP, or a re-install of the WMP shit. |

I have no idea what that means...
Still can't figure out how to just put avi's on a playable dvd, it's not the most user-friendly application I've seen. Thanks anyways...but unless I can sort this, it'll be yet again, a matter or downloading the assfucked nero until it stops letting me use it... |
Sooo....I tried winamp.
Music works fine. BUT When I try to play a video, it SAYS it's playing it, but all I get is the winamp thing, and a little black box with no video on the screen, no sound, nothing but the name of the file in the top of it. Is it just me, or is that fucked? Guys? ...not having fun here. |
hmmmm.... I would download and install a codec pack, that should clear everything up, if not, then its time for the old reformat.
