Dean Koontz had a spate of good books like Watchers, Phantoms, Midnight anbd Lightning, but he misses way more often than he hits. It's like he writes novels for every single idea he has, and just hopes some of them dont suck.

Vampires
the best one is from Bram Stoker, go figure. |
i'm reading that Dale Brown book (or is it Dan ?)
Angels and Demons - the prequel to the Davinci Code... the guy everyone is raving about and reading on the subways .. i'm not liking it ... very simplistic ... tries to dazzle with 'true facts' actual prose is pedestrian... and falls into every cliche thriller trap possible. (beautiful daughter of a scientist for the hero to fall in love with ...) yeah, thats never been done before. Why do they always insist on a rediculous love story when one isnt warrented ? |
I'm reading some shit called House of Bones, not liking it so far
|
Does not finishing a book because it had a stupid and unbelievable conclusion count ? Then the last book I almost finished reading was Dean Koontz's 'House of Thunder' this morning. Everything was cool until (SPOILER!) we find out that the heroine's nightmares are all because she's actually being brainwashed by Soviets who captured her a year before. What a crappy way to finish off what was a really good book up until then. Worst of all is I have another Koontz book on my desk I was going to read afterwards. I'm tempted to read the ending first just to make sure it doesn't end up as lame as this one.

Anyway...I just finished Phantoms by Koontz. I definatly liked it:) |
Meat Is Murder with is about cannibals in real live and in movies. It's really interesting.
|
Narcissus in Chains by Laurell K. Hamilton. It was actualy pretty good, but the ending was mediocre. I reccomend all books in this series. Especialy Burnt Offerings.
|
Just finished Children of Dune by Frank Herbert. That is the 3rd book of the Dune series and was shockingly good. The first book Dune was great, and then I read the 2nd book Dune Messiah and it was not nearly as good and the first, although it wasn't terrible by any means. So I figured I read the 3rd to see if, as sometimes happens, the series just continues going downhill after the first. It didn't. The 3rd was just as good as the 1st.

the series gets weirder as it goes after #3 |
i'm about 1/2 way through The Two Towers ..
figured i'd reread it to see what was left out of the movie (and why) as i remembered Legolas and Grimly had much bigger contributions in the books fut the focus in the movie fell on Aragon I had forgotten how well those books were written .. |

The last book I read was 'Beyond The Pale' by Savannah Russe. It was really short and I've read better. It was ok. I'll read anything recommended. |

i think he made the first few books accessable but he later allows his books to go deep into his vision of a possible future ..he sees it like he's already been there. I dont think i've read any other author who sees the impossible so clearly. |
I was away at my cabin last week, and pretty much all I do there is either read or watch movies:D
Here's what I read: Falling Angel by William Hjortzburg(sp?)- Great book that inspired Angel Heart. Seeing as all the stores here suck, I cant compare it to the movie, but it was a great read. Fast paced, action-packed, and an ending that'll hit ya like a ton of bricks [Unless you've seen the movie, of course:P] Pet Semetery by Stephen King- I thought the same of this as I do of most King books [Green Mile and The Shining exempted]. It had a great plot, but the man really isnt a very good writer. His tangents into pointlessness had me bored into submission in some points. Overall, it was OK, I guess. Along Came a Spider by James Patterson- My parents both love the Alex Cross novels, so I firgured it was time I read one. I certainly wasnt disapointed. Well written, and fast-paced for the most part, plus it had tons of twists, most of which were pretty unexpected. Oddly enough, all 3 of those have movies based on 'em, but I havnt seen any.... |
i just finished darkness, tell us by richard laymon. it was not Laymon's best but i still injoyed it.
|
just finished the Two Towers, and started The Return of the King.
interesting read just to see where the movie deviated from the book - and why .. |
Finished 5 of Christopher Moore's books.
Island of the Sequined Love Nun Practical Demonkeeping The Lust Lizard Of Melancholy Cove Bloodsucking Fiends(A Love Story) Coyote Blue Really looking forward to reading his "Lamb, the Gospel According to Biff,Christ's Childhood Pal" and "Fluke Or,I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings" There is a new one out of his,but I can not think of the title. |
'Booger' from Franklin E. Wales. I met him through a mutual friend and he was interested in me doing an accompanying CD based on it. I was so impressed with it that I'm working on a screenplay for it.

I have read Haunted. Let me know what you think of it when you're finished. Have you read his other books? |
Kiss the Girls by James Patterson- Definatly a recomended read if you're into crime/detective type novels. Having read Along Came a Spider, the 1st book in his Alex Cross saga, I am definatly becoming a fan of Mr. Patterson, and I plan to read more. He has a knack for creating creepy vilains, not so much in this as in ACAS though.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman- Been hearing tons of good things boput this guy, so I figured that I aughta read something of his. Definatly didnt disapoint. Very good read. The varied characters were a strong point: It seemlessly combined everything from the very human, very realistic character of Richard, to the larger-than-life characters such as Croup and Vandemar. The world he created was also breathtaking, as well as very realistic i a fantastic sort of way. In fewer words: I loved it, cover to cover. |

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. It's every bit as sad and disturbing as it's made out to be.

..pretty interesting book about Sam Raimi.... |
Finished the second Abarat book, and I enjoyed it more than the first one, I must say. And now I am reading A Stroke of Midnight by Laurell K. Hamilton. I am actually starting to like this series more than the Anita Blake series (which to me began to rapidly go downhill after Obsidian Butterfly).
