SUBSPECIES -- Great vampire movie! A shame it went down so early in the sequels tourney.

Dunno why it took me so long to see this as I wanted to watch it since it came out. Its a great 90's chopsocky Cop flick with Donnie Yen dropping his old school kung fu to try out some MMA moves this time around...

Donnie Yen, Is that IP Man? Either way gonna watch it.

I saw that movie when I was 8 or so... It was at an after school program and it SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME.

I was on a swimteam and I was scared that, as I was swimming, the monsters were going to burst through the floor of the pool and eat me. It was actually a pretty horrifying experience.

The Tall Man (2012)

Whooooooooo - boy. Where to begin with this disaster?...

First of all, I can't believe that this is the same director who created Martyrs, quite possibly one of the most disturbing movies that I have ever seen, and certainly one that has haunted me more than any other disturbing movie I had seen prior to viewing it.

Secondly, this really shouldn't have been pinned as horror. It's really more of a crime drama (I suppose) with a pretty heavy-handed message around the well-being of children from poor and/or abusive homes.

Among the many issues for me is that the Point honestly doesn't deliver - Laugier is trying to have a dialog with the audience in terms of how to truly "save" poor and destitute children from a system that "doesn't work." But, quite frankly, we don't see an adequate amount of the destitution or the "broken institution" to really have a case here.

Then there's the tone... First, it's horror (I mean, the name "The Tall Man" really connotes to me the delightful possibility of The Slenderman), then there's Small Town Conspiracy, then there's crime drama, all wrapped in a pretty over-the-top message which, honestly, could have been interesting if Laugier had gone with an honest, gritty crime-drama instead of trying to coat this in horror.

This movie was baffling to me, to be honest. It's not a horror movie by any means; it's a crime drama with a clear message that Laugier wants to get across, but it's only shoved down your throats in the last few minutes, and it's not a dialogue, it's a diatribe.

Utter fail, to be honest. Can't believe this was by the same guy who did Martyrs. Oy.

2/5.

The Loved Ones (2009)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...loved_ones.jpg

Ahhhhh, torture and exploitation. Not my favorite genre, but I lump this in with Mum & Dad; there's more to it than just torturing a kid. I appreciate that, here, the victim is a teenage boy, I appreciate the humor and the metaphors drawn to high school prom, and there were a couple of great scenes of a girl in a pretty pink dress acting like an absolute psychopath (talk about pointing out the insanity of prom, vanity, social pressure, etc.

I also have to say that the acting was fantastic and there was a pretty wonderfully creepy climactic moment that I didn't expect, that separated this from exploitation films that have come before. Also some great humor toward the end.

I think that Ferox will love this.

For me it's hard to give a rating as it's just not my genre.

3.5/5.

The Prophecy II

I saw Looper and thought it was really good. The kid who played Cid is one of the best 5ish year old actors I've ever seen.

Red Room 2

Equally as wtf as the first. Although the first was better, and a bit more disturbing IMO. The ending of each film was equally strong I believe. Anybody seen either of these?
