_____V_____ 01-07-2007 07:30 PM

This franchise started off so promisingly but excessive dramatisation and too much cheesiness caused its downfall. Its just like a candle's flame burning brightly in the beginning then flickering out with short dazzling outbursts.

The original started it all, and it was a classic. Everyone still remembers Mrs.Voorhees and his little boy. My introduction to the franchise. Excellent.
Part II took it one step forward, and the thought "Oh so there was Jason in the woods after all!" struck the minds. Jason's first badass show. Excellent. My favorite of the lot.
Part III, easily the second best, when they took it into a new 3D frontier and Jason became really badass with his victims **SPOILER** the poker-rod scene and the arrow scene. Fantastic.
Part IV was supposed to be Jason's end, and it was nicely done but in the end Tommy Jarvis had a change of "soul"? I liked it till the dramatic climax.
Part V of the F13 franchise can be related to Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, **SPOILER** because there was, realistically, no Jason in it, but Tommy was there. Good in parts, but yeah, average overall.
Part VI took off where IV had left, with **SPOILER** Tommy going and digging Jason's corpse up and it gets re-animated by a bolt of lightning. First hint that Jason has some other-wordly connections as well. Cheesiness galore and some nicely timed deaths. Good.
Part VII was easily the worst of the series. What was this supposed to be? Jason vs Carrie? Maybe the SK character would have made more sense in this one. Poor by my standards.
Part VIII took it to another level. Till now Jason was in the woods and semi-urban areas. Now he's striding through no less than Manhattan. The deaths on the ship and then in the city are nicely done. Good try, and a bizarre ending. Average IMO.
Part IX was the second worst of the series. The whole idea of **SPOILER** being Jason-possessed? Wtf was that all about? This one stuck in my throat and never went below to get digested. The ending was a shocker with Freddy's gloved hand making a cameo. Mediocre is what I give to this one.
Part X was another change. Although it was tough to ascertain if they took it up after VIII, they tried something different. Most people bash this one as "one which went overboard" but I say, after 9 parts of the same hash and re-hash, did the audience need another one with the same stuff? At least they got thinking and took him where he had a more menacing presence, in a spaceship. Where there's nowhere else to go cept fight it out(ala Alien). Decent try, good entertainer.
FvJ is not strictly F13, so it doesnt fit the discussion here. Also we have had several threads discussing it before and I ve already posted my views on it.

My Grading would be :-

Part II
Part III : 3D
Original

Part IV : Final Chapter
Part VI : Jason Lives
Part VIII : Jason Takes Manhattan
Part X : Jason X

Part V : A New Beginning
Part IX : Jason Goes To Hell
Part VII : The New Blood

Excellent review of all the films. I also think part II is the best of the series. Actually, they're all good until Jason becames this invincible creature/zombie. I just hated how they seemed to throw away any credibility, and just turned it into a yearly cash cow. The series could've went in several different directions, and they might be regarded more highly:

Get rid of the zombie shit. They should've kept him as a killer like he was in II. There might not have been as many sequels by doing this, but it would have kept things a little more believable.

Although V definitely isn't the best, this direction had lots of potential. Similar to what Carpenter wanted to do with Halloween: Make the rest of the films not even involve the same killer/plot. The film makers should've ignored the cries by fans for Jason(at least for another movie or two), and seen what they could do. If done correctly, they might have been able to steer the series from slasher flick cheese into maybe a drama/psychological horror direction. A big 'What If?" scenario there.

I also hated how this franchise always ignored the fan requests to have a film take place during a snow storm. If they were gonna listen to fans over the bitching about V, I dont see why they couldn't listen to this simple request.

Some of the comedy in Jason X redeemed it for me. I especially loved the whole 1980s, Earth hologram. Sure it wasn't as good as some of the other movies in the series but it could have been a lot worse. What impresses me is the fact that these horror films not only come out with so many sequels but they manage to get mainstream theatrical releases rather than just straight to video follow-ups.

SPOILERS FOR JGTH

You think? I really enjoyed it...yet another attempt to re-work the story, but I think it worked pretty well. Crieghton Duke was the best thing to happen in the series since the hockey mask and its really a shame that he didnt survive to make it into another sequel or two. The kills were great, the alterations to the story worked alot better than most of the other attempts...I thought it was really fun.

For me, it looks like this :

1- Friday the 13th
2- Part III
3- Part II
4- Part VI: Jason Lives
5- Part IV: The Final Chapter
6- Jason Goes to Hell : The Final Friday
7- Part V: A New Beginning
8- Part VII: The New Blood
9- PartVIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
10- Jason X

The first chapter will always remain my favorite, not only because it is a horror classic by any means, but also because, by the time I saw it (around 1985 I guess), I had heard about these films and the killer Jason, so it was a total surprise for me when I found out the identity of the killer. As Alky said, part III had some really nice death scenes, plus Jason gets at last his infamous hockey mask! Part II was very solid, but lacked a little something that I and III had. Parhaps it was that potatoe sack. Part VI was a riot, one of the most entertaining of the series IMO with its numerous decapitation scenes, as well as being the first one I saw in a movie theater! Part IV was okay, but the series was starting to look a bit tired already at that point.

As for Jason Goes to Hell, I guess many of you don't remember (or maybe weren't aware of this at the time), but it was produced by Cunningham in an attempt to, as he said it himself "finish what I've started in such a way that no one will be able to bring it back", as he was sorely disapointed by the turn the whole series had taken and thought it had become a pathetic parody of itself. So for that only, and for Cunnigham's and co's audacity in doing something totally off and stating that the movie's sole intent was just to kill the beast, I think it deserves its place there. Unfortunately, as Jason X painfully reminded us, they did not succeed!

The rest is just garbage in my opinion, perhaps with part V only being "bad" as part of the series where it would have been "ok" as a stand-alone movie, while Part VII's only good moment being the sleeping bag scene, which is one of my favorite in the whole series. Nothing good to say about the last two on my list!

I wonder how great Friday the 13th part 5 and Hostel would have been if Sergio Martino would have directed them back in the 70s?:D

crazy raplh 01-10-2007 04:56 PM

Jason Vorhees is immortal, I would say part 2 or 3 I love the style, feel everything about it. I wish I could move back to the year 1982. lol

alkytrio666 01-10-2007 05:02 PM

I know what you mean...when the Friday the 13th franchise started off, the teen slasher was still fresh. If you're going to watch a movie about teens getting drunk and stoned and having a lot of sex, and then getting killed off one by one...there's nothing like one of the F13s. In a sick kind of way, it's a comfortable atmosphere to sink into.

davidd60 01-17-2007 03:16 PM

Absolutely! I think nothing will ever beat the "teens getting killed during sex" double impalement in a bed death scene from the second one (if I remember correctly)!

joshaube 01-19-2007 05:44 AM

I've watched the first six in a night-long marathon on Scream last year... on, well, friday the 13th. I can't say which I preferred from those... but I'd probably say 1 & 2. After continuely the same formula hour after hour, the quality degrades quickly. I can say that watching this in a marathon doesn't work too well.

Some very mixed opinions there. I havent watched any of the Friday 13th films in a long long time so long ago I cant even remember what ones lol. I have this kinda problem where I dont like watching new films if I havent seen the old ones lol so Im a little behind. However would you suggest that I go right back and watch them all through in order or am I just being crazy if I do so? lol
