maybe you just like the fact that you can brainwash a dog into "loving you" but you can't do that to a human.

personally, I think cruelty to animals starts by owning one as a pet anyway. would you want to live like that? they belong in the wild.

So you would be comfortable with wild, rabid animals running the streets.

well if they wandered from the wild, hopefully they would be shot quickly.

I think the difference between hitting an animal and hitting a human is that a lot of the time you can't explain to an animal why you're hitting it. You can show them, like if it was because it destroyed the furniture, but you can't explain to them why that's a bad thing.

You've obviously never seen a cat in action.

But to be fair in that situation I would have done something - maybe not punching some one straight off the bat would be a good idea but I don't think I'd let it go.

I don't think it's putting an animal over a person either. If some one was damaging your property then you'd do something too. My car/bike etc might not be worth more than a human live but i sure as hell aren't going to sit by and let some one steal or damage it..

When I see or hear stuff like that I also wished I was there so I could jump in and stop it.Well today I finally got the chance to jump and in and protect and save an animal that couldn't speak up for it's self.

I've been in a bit of a fued of sorts with a neighbor down the street for a few months now on the way he treats his dog.He keeps it chained up in the backyard and the poor thing looks starved to death. When he first got he had it in the backyard with no shelter of any kind. One night it was storming really bad.High winds, thunder, and lighting.I called the animal shetler and the police and they made him get a doghouse for it.But the neglect continued. Then a few weeks ago the dog died.I assume from starvation.

Then last week the bastard got another puppy.Couldn't have been more than two months old.I was shocked.why would somebody who can't take care of one dog get another?Well this morning I went out the my car and I hear the puppy yealping really loud and i hear the guy screaming at it for getting off its chain, whcih in fact is a little piece of flimsy nylon rope.I walk over and this guy is just beating this poor puppy over and over again with a stick.I yell at the guy and ask him what he's doing and he says for me to mind my own fucking buisness.I yell back ans say fuck you, thats not nessacary. He says it's his dog and he'll do what he wants with it and strikes him two more times while staring right at me.At this point I lose it and just charge the guy at full force. We end up on the ground throwing fists at each other.we shuffle for a few minutes then the cops show up and break us up.After statements and stories are took down the cops call the animal shelter and have them take the puppy from the man.I didn't get arrested casue the guy said he didn't wanna press charges which I'm sure there's gonna be alot more trouble with this guy down the road. And he no longer has the puppy cause the animal shelter came and got it.And I've already talked to a freind and there going to adopt the puppy and I know they'll give it a great home.

One more thing. What is the point of having a dog if your gonna keep it chained up in the backyard? i see this in alot of places.People tell me they do it for protection.Whats that dog goning to protect beside the little radius he can go with his chain.I've always had dogs and they have always been inside dogs.

So how does everyone else feel about animals and animal abuse?

I really hate people like that. I don't know what I would do in that situation. I know I would be extremely pissed off. I would have probably called someone to have his dog taken away from him. It would suck to be in that situation though.

I feel the same way. I would've had to have done something...

This part of the story I can definitely relate to. While I haven't seen anyone in my neighborhood personally hitting or beating their dogs, I constantly see them just chained or roped outside on a leash, which drives me utterly insane. I live in a low-income neighborhood with really tiny apartments and I think what happened in most cases is that people purchased dogs ("What a cute little puppy!") without realizing what they're getting into. Part of the reason why my boyfriend and I haven't gotten a dog is that our apartment is too small (and we don't want to get one of those little "toy" dogs - LOL). It's about being a RESPONSIBLE OWNER. If you're getting a pet, you need to be aware of their needs. Especially dogs. Dogs vary from breed to breed and have extremely different personalities - some need LOTS of room to run (weinerimers), and some just tear the shit out of your stuff unless you train them not to (terriers). People need to know what they're getting into BEFORE they purchase a pet, dogs especially. Dogs are pack animals and they NEED to identify who the alpha dog is. Owners NEED to train their dogs (not ABUSE them), but train them.

But people are lazy and stupid. Most of them don't see dogs as members of the family or as a responsibility; they're like a piece of furniture or an ornament. It's utter bullshit and it kills me to see those poor dogs tethered outside like that.

Back to your story - I'm glad that you stood up to him. I'm not sure if I have the cajones to do it myself (I'd probably call animal services and pester them until they took the dog away), but I applaud you for sticking up for the puppy. Good luck with this douchebag in the future. Hope he doesn't fuck with you.

This made me giggle. These are my cats:

They are hairless and wouldn't survive a day in the wild. :p
