The best movie of 2009 so far. Highly recommended.

How do you get to see these movies again??

Are you some kind of an indian pirate mafioso?

Oh yeah, Rashomon is definitely an invaluable film resource.
Have you seen any other of Kurosawa's work?

Besides Roshomon I've only seen 7 Samurai and Yojimbo, been meaning to check out some of his later stuff like Dreams or Kagemusha or Ran.

Ran is my favorite of his films. Epic like none other.
Oh! If you've never checked out Sanjuro, the sequel to Yojimbo, definitely watch that, too. I think it's at least just as great, if not better, than the original.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)

Just finished my third or fourth viewing of the series earlier today, so I popped this in. Sure, it's a wholly different work of art than the series, but I still find it an appropriate counter-point to the show, and it's still definitely one of my favorite Lynch films.

Sorry, V, I've got to disagree..

Public Enemies (2009)

A failed character study, a failed romantic drama, a failed historical bio-pic- all that comes through in Mann's latest movie is his plentiful digital gunfire, and even that gets old quickly. There was so much potential in a film about John Dillinger, but the script is horrendously derivitive; it ignores its time period (this was the depression- did anyone notice?) as well as its characters and is more concerned with meaningless quibble and false sentimentality. Johnny Depp is adequate, I suppose, for the material he was given, but I felt nothing for his character; in a scene toward the end of the film he finds identification with the gangsters of the silver screen, but there was no double revelation involving me. Bale was an entirely seperate disaster on his own; he recklessly blends about four different accents and two kinds of speech inpediments, and his face retains the emotional resonance of cardboard. A film about John Dillinger should be full of life, moral ambiguity, depthful characters; aside from a few well-directed action sequences, this film was left cold and uncared for by a director who should have known better.

Thats a pretty scathing review, K. I thought the film was awesome. Bale and Depp were just right for their characters - Bale put up a solid portrayal of someone torn between two choices and eventually going with the tougher one, and Depp was very, very iconic in his portrayal of Dillinger. Mann knew exactly where his two powerhouse performers were, and he used them very concisely and intelligently throughout the script which was pacy, intelligent and explosive (when needed).

The only gripe (if one has to be VERY picky) would be the camerawork which was sometimes too close for comfort and zoomed in unnecessarily in plenty of shots. Otherwise, its a very good, solid film. Mann has outdone himself with this.

I still recommend it highly to everyone else. Watch it and form your own opinions.
