Hausu is a cinematic fun house of childlike imagination. Completely out-of-its-mind, and an absolutely singular (and often virtuosic) work of horror, comedy, and melodrama. Every moment of the film is another delightful experiment; colorful, hyper-kinetic, and the most fun you're bound to have movie-watching. Supposedly conceived to get dwindling audiences excited again about Japanese cinema, it's certainly enough to reinvigorate nearly anyone's love for film.

Eureka's Masters of Cinema series has already released an incredible edition of this movie (R2), and Criterion is supposed to be doing it stateside at some point this year.

Trailer:

I help run an arthouse theater in Iowa City and am currently in the process of getting this print. I've heard nothing but excellent things about it.

Have you talked directly to Janus films? From what I hear, they're pretty eager to get this out to any theatre that wants to screen it.

Definitely let me know if you get a hold of it. It's going to blow your mind.

That might possibly have been the best trailer I have ever seen. I really need to see that now.

Yes indeed. The only roadblock is "pitching" the film to my fellow board members tomorrow, but since we're all pretty like-minded, I don't see why we won't be getting it.

Best of luck! You should definitely utilize all the great press material available on Janus' website. I mean, the screencaps and trailer speak for themselves, haha.

Watched The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) tonight, and I should recommend it along with more of Peter Greenaway's work:

The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)
A Zed & Two Noughts (1985)
The Belly of an Architect (1987)
Drowning by Numbers (1988)
The Falls (1980)

Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrve CTWF... Absolute BRILLIANT filmmaking. The only other movie of his that I've seen was 8 1/2 Women... It was... Ok... I felt as though it was just absurdist artsie crap. I might be too harsh on it, but it just came across as self-indulgent.

I'll have to check out his other stuff, though.

FINALLY got around to seeing American Zombie and I thought that it was great. I would say that it's probably more "dark comedy" than actual "horror," but I thought that it was a blast. I was wary about a mockumentary at first, but ultimately I think it's a good addition to the Zombie genre and a must-see for all zombie fans. Definitely more low-key than the usual zombie fare, but it works. Highly recommended.

4.5/5

It's not a perfect movie but it's refreshing and different.
