I know it's loathed by some but I still give it 6/10. It's creaky, it's old and it has Peter Cushing. ;)

A good if flawed film. A good cast of actors and well made. The only downside for me is the moth-person - which is just a person dressed as a moth!

The Gorgon has Hammer's usual quality of great cast and good production values.

Just a shame that the mechanical snakes look so awful.
In an interview Barbara Shelley says that she would have loved to play the Gorgon herself (which the studio wouldn't let her do because then everyone would know who the Gorgon is - even though most people pretty much guessed who it was anyway!) and would have been quite happy to have real snakes on her head - which she says would have looked great - then sighs as she refers to the awful mechanical ones!

That would have been fascinating, shame she didn't play the gorgon I'm sure they could have still disguised her somehow. I didn't mind the mechanical snakes-I felt her presence was still creepily striking enough to have the desired effect.

Yes i'm sure with make-up and dark lighting you could have hidden the fact that it was Barbara Shelley. But there you go...

And as i say, ironically you didn't have to be Columbo to work out who The Gorgon was anyway!

She was also great in Village of the Damned (1960) and if you have seen it-Ghost Story (1974) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071791/
although Marianne Faithfull got all the attention from it.

Didn't like Ghost Story, but Village of the Damned is a classic!

Some pre 1969 flicks I enjoyed recently,

Destroy All Monsters
Voodoo Woman
Rasputin: The Mad Monk

Fine films, all of them!

Destroy All Monsters is my fave Godzilla flick.

The Bloody Pit Of Horror (1965)-Italian cheesefest supposedly "based on the writings of the Marquis De Sade". I doubt Sade fans would enjoy the campness of this but I could be wrong. The Crimson Executioner's enthusiasm is hard not to enjoy. But overall a bit too cheesy to wholeheartedly recommend.
