[REC]
Really scary Spanish found footage flick. I have a review on my channel if you want a more in depth review.

Damn Heathen 09-10-2014 05:29 AM

El Retorno del Hombre Lobo -- 8.5/10; I'm finally delving into Paul Naschy's filmography and kicking myself for putting it off. Here we see the wolfman battling vampires, a mummy, and the Countess Bathory.,with the order of the day being extensive histrionics that give the action scenes a haunted-attraction vibe. None of it comes off particularly schlocky, though, as the sets are well crafted and the scenes are shot in a painterly fashion. This will become a staple in my Halloween playlist.

horcrux2007 09-15-2014 06:40 AM

Watched In Fear back on Thursday. Review is in my signature.

Damn Heathen 09-17-2014 02:41 PM

La Noche de Walpurgis -- 7/10; Lesbo vamps prancing in slow mo, a werewolf with a drooling problem, a nod to Tombs of the Blind Dead...yep, this is a good time.

Damn Heathen 09-19-2014 01:49 PM

Vortice Mortale -- 3.5/10; Three vixens play a little too rough with their conquests. Most of the horror either passive or after the fact, which makes for a dull watch.

Damn Heathen 09-22-2014 01:03 AM

La Rose de Fer -- 10/10; One of the richest horror films I have ever seen. As the characters become lost in a vast cemetery and in their contemplation of death, so too does the viewer. It seems to have inspired various parts of Dellamorte Dellamore.

I can't wait to look into this movie. I've been desperate for stuff to watch lately. Huge fan of Cemetery Man so I'm sure I'll like it.

I recently watched Lisa and the Devil, a Bava film from the 70's. Not sure what I'd rate it but I actually quite enjoyed it. It had some cheesy, romantic qualities but all in all it was very interesting and fun to watch.

I think I found the most disturbing foreign movie yet.....

Salo (1975)

I rented it by disc through Netflix. I am not sure how to describe this movie other than if you have a weak stomach, don't bother watching it. I don't think I can even rate it.......

I honestly thought Salo was pretty repetitive, and any "deeper meaning" was completely lost on me.

I know what you mean; ,it's like I kept expecting something more to come out of it. If there was any symbolism, it went straight over my head.

Funny Games (1997)

Austrian thriller film about two men hold a family captive while they are in their vacation home, and they physically and psychologically torture them with sadistic games.

Pretty interesting take on the home invasion genre, and it was especially relevant in the late 90's when movies were becoming even more gory and gritty. This movie is mostly a critique on horror movies of the time. The film intentionally contradicts itself, and one of the men occasionally breaks the fourth wall. On one occasion, he makes a bet with the family and asks the audience's opinion on the bet. The other captor frequently states the rules of a thriller film, such as how he won't kill the family immediately because there's "not as much entertainment value". There's even a scene where one of them rewinds the film itself so that the events play out how he wants it to. It's a pretty morbid movie; there's hardly any gore, but the scares are mostly psychological. Other than that, the movie is a little dull at times.

6/10

The US version is a shot-for-shot remake.

CAT O' NINE TAILS. Good show, really enjoyed it even though Argento said it was his least favorite film.

Damn Heathen 02-25-2015 03:37 PM

The Perfume of the Lady in Black -- 4.5/10; Rather dull, but with a great finale.

They don't come more heavy-handed than this. Couldn't be bothered with the remake.

'Possession', Polish, 1981.

I think Zulawski may have inspired some of Cronenberg's early body horror.

Anyway, I thought it was genius and Isabelle Adjani is as lovely as she is batsh*t.

Polish Director (by way of Ukraine) - shot in Germany.

Anchen 03-01-2015 03:23 AM

... And it's in English, true.

I was mentally categrizing it with another one of his works I saw a few years ago, Szamanka? Which I think was in Polish and also mindblowing and another metaphor-filled portrait of a woman going off the rails as a result of an unhealthy relationship.

Amazing musical score in that one too!

Szamanka looks amazing. Now to find it online.

Anchen 03-01-2015 07:04 AM

Oh you really should, I saw it at a film festival that also showed Possession and another one of Zulawski's that's not horror, but in many ways horrific at any rate. Anyway, I think I was the only one in the audience who was thrilled rather than appalled at these screenings (one guy actually stormed out of Possession, yelling in anger, it was pretty funny.)

Hope you find it, I'd love to hear someone else's take.

Black Past -- 3.5/10; I admire the effort Olaf, but it's a bit too home-video for my liking.

FryeDwight 03-19-2015 01:23 AM

WEREWOLF WOMAN (1976). An offering on a 50 pack collection, sort of GINGER SNAPS before GINGER SNAPS which descends into I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE vibe.
Cheesy Italian flick has lots of gore and quite a bit of nudity, which can be a good thing, but the film is hard going and once is really enough. **

Damn Heathen 03-23-2015 08:00 PM

Mons Veneris -- 8.5/10; It destroyed my soul.

Alléluia (2014)
From the director of Calvaire and Vinyan.
Pretty good retelling/remake of the Honeymoon Killers.
Nicely shot and different enough to justify its making.

Borgman (2013)
Pretty strange Dutch film about a vagrant that insinuates himself into a middle class family very much to their detriment. Kinda reminded me of The Servant (on Crack) but really it is a very different animal. Don't expect a ton of answers either.

you need to delete everything from the copy and pasted link after the forward slash.

So this link: https://youtu.be/y9se1XPD48c

becomes this: y9se1XPD48c

You put that between the bracketed youtube and /youtube
