Agreed...

I'll still always have Evil Dead 2... Which is my favorite.

kyl3thund3r 11-04-2011 04:01 PM

The idea of rebooting the evil dead actually makes me feel a bit sick with rage. As much as I like the evil dead 2, the thing i don't like about it is that it it's self was a reboot of sorts, which didn't really need to be done.

But to have no ash in it... what the actual fuck?

kampia 11-07-2011 09:08 PM

bah i cant believe another actor will play ash. some films should stay original!

kyl3thund3r 11-08-2011 02:54 AM

I had read that they cut ash out of it completely. they seem to have changed the format of it almost completely.

There has been plenty of outcry from fans, in the months since it was announced, that Diablo Cody would be working on the remake of The Evil Dead. With good reason people began imagining Ash using a hamburger telephone and calling people, "Homeskillet."

Now doing press to promote her newest film, Young Adult, Cody is setting the record straight.

Collider recently spoke with the writer about the project and explained both her contribution to the script as well as her desire to do it right. First off, one of the biggest things of note is the fact that while Cody did write a draft, most of the movie is still coming from the original version written by Fede Alvarez (who is also directing the film), which Cody says should give us quite a fright. "Because the director’s draft was really scary, I tried to stay away from some of the big horror set pieces," she said. "I didn’t wanna mess with his vision, because he’s the one who ultimately has to shoot it." She does admit that she included something "unbelievably violent" towards the end and a few wounds here or there, but nothing massive.

As for being part of the movie, she's fully aware of the backlash and hopes to assure fans of the cult classic that she will be doing the project justice. First mentioning that she wouldn't have done the movie if Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell hadn't been on board as producers, she expressed her love of the original trilogy and then said that the dialogue in the movie will fit the tone.

"I was nervous to take the job because I thought 'Ugh, I’m gonna get shit for this. People are not gonna like this, because all people know of me is like Juno and they think I’m gonna pollute Evil Dead with like wacky dialogue and cute stuff and folk music,'" she said. "And it’s like 'No, look I understand what this is. I’m interested in storytelling here and making it scary and good and true to the original.'"

She also hopes that Young Adult, which she jokingly calls a "horrifying movie," will help convince fans that Juno is not all she's capable of.

Yesterday we learned that Ghost House/Mandate Pictures and Sony/FilmDistrict would be headed to New Zealand in March to begin filming Evil Dead, the remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 The Evil Dead.

Fede Alvarez directs from his own screenplay co-written with Rodo Sayagues. Revisions were done by Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody.

The story centers on five friends holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. As per exclusive reports, there is a drug subplot -

Quote:

The "new spin" is the motivation behind the trip, with the lead character taking his younger sister to the family's cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she's actually possessed.
Now, we have even more details. There's quite a bit you may want to avoid if you want to go in cold.

********HERE THERE BE SPOILERS********ALERT***********

A whole bunch of new info hit regarding the character dynamics of the group, and the vaguest of plot outlines is beginning to shake out from all of the disparate details.

First off the tone is apparently not quite as campy as before. This is apparently going for more straight-up scares a la The Shining.

As per Moviehole, "Mia and David, estranged siblings who have recently lost their mother (Mia’s taking it the hardest being that she’s the one who spent most days at the hospital watching her mother deteriorate) have reunited, along with some old friends and his David’s fiancee, for an intervention at THAT old cabin. It’s here that the near rehabilitated Mia (who has apparently already been cast) will also toss the last of her drugs down the well and finally go cold Turkey.

A big storm sets in. Everyone heads to the cabin. The book of the dead is found, and arrogant Eric (one of the friends along for the trip) takes the most interest in transcribing passages from it. Always the dicks that bring the trouble, right?

Meanwhile Mia struggles with her newly sober self — BIG TIME. She was going slightly loopy anyway from a recent overdose (one in which she technically died from but was brought back) so no surprise that Mia is the first and worst to go bananas. And no surprise either that nobody believes her crazy claims of coyote dogs and trees attacking her!

Convinced this is just a crazy druggo coming to grips with her new reality, the gang insist Mia stay put. As far as they’re concerned, she’ll do anything to get out of the cabin and back to the comfort of a bar.

The stuff Mia starts seeing (she sees in the mirror a bloody face with a cracked skull sticking out) and doing (vomiting blood and vile at her friends; getting trigger-happy with a rifle) is alarming; but again, David and co say she’s not leaving until she’s cold turkey. Bad idea obviously — the more time in the cabin, the further the demon that lives there can climb inside her body and take it over.

Covered in burns and blisters, and with bloodshot eyes, and complete with a new macabre grin, Mia goes all Jack Torrance on her mates. Even after she’s injected with tranquilizers, the wild young woman is still a menace. They have no choice but to lock her in.. well, “Evil Dead” fans will know what that’s about.

There’s some fun moments. With great effects, they could look a treat. For instance, when the gang do decide its time to get Mia to the hospital, David grabs the girl and they drive to the bridge they came in on… Only its gone now! Water has swallowed it whole.

The demons plan, of course, is to take everyone’s soul by the end of the film (with Mia’s help). There’s no Ash to make sure that doesn’t happen, so it’s grim."

***********END OF SPOILERS************

With gory moments that remind one of “Hellraiser” or “Cabin Fever” more than anything, and with obvious “Shining” comparisons, “Evil Dead” sounds like it’s going to be a perfectly good horror movie…just not an “Evil Dead” movie.

Diablo Cody?

Fuck this will be utter SHIT.

roshiq 12-09-2011 11:32 AM

I think it's really very much annoying for the fans that just to sell the story they are declaring a completely different film as an Evil Dead film/remake by adding that book of the dead into the mix. I don't care how 'great' they would make the film but there is nothing Evil Dead about it.

They should seriously consider re-title the film in its pre-production stage.

Elvis_Christ 12-09-2011 02:13 PM

Can't wait for all the hipster rants about the Necronomicon by the Diablo Cody's rewrite

That should've happened with a lot of remakes they'd get taken more seriously.

Who cares if the story's been "borrowed" look at all the Italian knock offs... great stuff. Guess they are worried about being sued like all the drama with Castellari's The Last Shark.

man i have been talking about this on hdc since 2005 ( remember when everyone thought ash was going to be in freddy vs jason 2... lol)

im not so pissed about sean william scott playing ash as long as ash is at least in it. this movie has tcsm remake written all over it. i hope im wrong though. it still might be a ok movie but i agree that it probably wont be a good evil dead movie. v thanks for the great updates.

'The Evil Dead' Remake Has its Lead and it is Lily Collins.

If you read the headline and asked, "Who the hell is she," don't feel bad. Lily Collins is an actress, and she's been in a few movies that many haven't seen.

She was Sandra Bullock's daughter in The Blind Side, appeared in Priest and Abduction and has the role of Snow White in Mirror Mirror (the one with Julia Roberts). She was in a couple of episodes of the new 90210. Aside from two other movies in various stages of production, that's about it.

Bloody Disgusting broke the news and now the web is abuzz with the casting of the "new Ash." So, before anyone gets their underwear wadded up, calm down and remember a few things.

First, her character's name is Mia, NOT ASH. As stated by several people involved with the production, Ash will not be a character in the film, a rather wise decision as no one could ever replace Bruce Campbell. Mia is a recovering drug addict and the first person to notice the demons lurking around the cabin. She's not playing the action hero that Ash morphed into during the second and third films, but a strung-out junkie who no one believes when she tells her friends of the evil surrounding the cabin. Or she might be the first one possessed, depending on where you read the plot summary. Regardless, this character is not Ash in any way, shape or form, so let that rumor/hype die.

Second, anyone actually remember Campbell's acting in the original Evil Dead ? Let's just say he improved between the first and second films (to put it kindly). Instead of playing it straight, Campbell played to his strength, morphing into a campy, over-the-top, wise-ass hero. (He deserved an Oscar nomination for Bubba Ho-Tep) His skills as an actor grew quite a bit between the first two films and the role of Ash became a second skin for him, which he falls back into with ease (much like Jack Nicholson and his persona).

One final point. When most people talk about the Evil Dead films and Ash, they're often thinking of the second film only, with mere bits and pieces of the first film lodged in their heads. Everyone seems to forget the shabby acting and how Ash was unable to untangle himself from a bookcase. Hell, Ash didn't start killing Deadites until the final act of the film. Scotty scored the first kill, pushing Ash out of the way and whacking up Shelly with an axe. It wasn't until the second film that Ash became the Deadite exterminator and character we all love.

Speaking of which, it would be interesting to see if the new film ends like the old one, giving us the chance to see a different take on the hero of the Evil Dead films. Yeah, no one will replace Campbell in the film, but who wouldn't want to see some hot gal, victimized throughout the first movie, take on the Deadites in the second.

(Hey, the hot version of Ash is in the works, at least in comic book form!)

So give Collins a chance, folks. She's doing something right if she snagged a role opposite Julia Roberts. And it's obvious the remake isn't trying to imitate the original films. So complain all you want about reboots and remakes, but let's see what Collins can bring to the role.

_____V_____ 01-25-2012 02:34 AM

Bad news for those of you hoping to see a Phil Collins cameo as a big, bald Deadite in the upcoming Evil Dead reboot, as his daughter Lily has dropped out of the film’s leading role.

Collins had signed on to play recovering drug-addict Mia, whose attempts to wean herself off the narcotics are set to be complicated by the soul-sucking nasties released by the Necronomicon.

However, scheduling clashes with other projects have meant Collins has been forced to step down from the role.

Variety’s Jeff Sneider broke the news with the following Tweet: “Again, in case you missed it, LILY COLLINS is OUT of THE EVIL DEAD reboot due to a scheduling issue. Agents, start your engines…”

The new film, directed by Fede Alvarez from a script worked on (in part) by Diablo Cody will maintain the basic set-up of the original (kids go to a creepy woodland cabin) whilst also taking it in some new directions.

The official synopsis explains the differences as follows: “Mia and David, estranged siblings who have recently lost their mother (Mia’s taking it the hardest being that she’s the one who spent most days at the hospital watching her mother deteriorate) have reunited, along with some old friends and his David’s fiancee, for an intervention at THAT old cabin. It’s here that the near rehabilitated Mia will also toss the last of her drugs down the well and finally go cold turkey.”

The Evil Dead is set for a US release date of 13 April 2013, so plenty of time for a replacement to be found for Collins. As long as there’s room for a Bruce Campbell cameo, we’ll be happy.

_____V_____ 02-20-2012 01:52 AM

Evil Dead recently gained a replacement for Lily Collins in the form of Jane Levy, and the star of US show Shameless has wasted little time before waxing lyrical about her love for the franchise.

“I'm so excited," she said. "I'm a big fan of the original. To me it's the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They've changed it a lot, but it's still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can't see it!”

“As for the tone,” she continues, “I think the humour in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don't know that they meant it to be funny...this one is not funny. It's definitely dark.”

Meanwhile, Bruce Campbell has also had a bit to say, albeit briefly, confirming that the malevolent trees of the original will be making a reappearance, and that, “they’re not terribly well-behaved this time either.”

Girls, you have been warned… stay away from the shrubbery!

Evil Dead will begin shooting in New Zealand later in the year, and will open in the US on 12 April 2013.

A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.

The ‘Evil Dead’ Remake Is At Least An R, “So Bloody It Will Make Your Head Spin”

Quote:

Director Fede Alvarez recently wrapped up photography on Evil Dead, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures’ remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror classic, that was shot in Auckland, New Zealand.

Raimi told Collider, “It’s really bloody. It’s so bloody, it will make your head spin. I’ve seen almost all the dailies and they’re really going for it. It’s gonna be grisly and intense and non-stop.”

Does that mean it will have to be R-rated then? “Definitely R. Maybe worse.
The film was written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues (with a polish by Diablo Cody) is produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the popular Ash character in the original trilogy.

The film is due in theaters on April 12th, 2013.

'The Evil Dead' remake at New York Comic-Con: A gory new trailer, and the wisdom of Bruce Campbell

Quote:

Footage Screened: An extended and extremely gory trailer for the remake debuted in front of a crowd. The beats of the film are familiar: A group of young people go into a remote cabin. But the trailer quickly descends into extremely visceral violence. Some of it looks familiar, including the saw-assisted removal of a demonic hand and a frisky tree. Some of it is all new: The trailer ended with one of the female characters cutting into her own mouth with what appeared to be a box cutter. Aesthetic-wise, it looks like they’re going for something in the neighborhood of “an orgy of bloodshed.”

Snap Judgment: The sheer extremity of the violence in the footage screened earned roars of approval from the crowd. Still, speaking as a lifelong Evil Dead fan, it was a bit disappointing to see that the film is mostly ignoring the goofy slapstick which made the later entries in the series so memorable. This Evil Dead looks like an undeniably freaky horror film — it’s just not clear how much of an Evil Dead film it is.

The film is set to hit theaters on April 13, 2013.

I'm glad they took out the Ash character, no one could do a better performance than Bruce did. I like that they are taking the humor out of it, it has the potential to be really frightening. I am tired of all of the remakes but this is one I will check out.

Yeah...it may be a complete spook-fest but the trailer did one good thing to me...brought me back to Raimi's original cabin for some moments where I had one of the creepiest encounters & plenty of greatest chills of horror cinema for the very first time in my life back in those beautiful childhood days.

Well, I came to this thread just to rant about one of my favorite movies having a re-make, but you guys made me think twice...without an "ash" actor replacement, there is chance of a good re-make, at least decent...And the footage seems appealing

I was very skeptical when I heard about this 're-make'. But after finding out that Campbell and Raimi had heavy involvement, I had second thoughts. It's a given that the original cannot be touched, it is a work of art. But the teaser for the remake actually doesn't look too bad and I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.

What I've read on it is pretty much it will be like what the nightmare on elem street remake. Pretty much just not the same. I kinda agree with a lot of people about that this movie shouldn't be touched and left to stay as a classic.

Bruce Campbell says Evil Dead remake is aiming for an R rating

Quote:

Bruce Campbell has given an update on the forthcoming Evil Dead remake, confirming that the filmmakers are aiming for an R rating, and stressing that the fans are always at the forefront of his consideration.

“We do care what the fans think,” says Campbell, in relation to the initial reaction to the news that a remake was on the way. “There was a lot of negative reactions… they were concerned. But we’re all over this project. Hopefully that will mellow fans out.”

As for the film’s excessive gore content, Campbell reveals that the movie has yet to be rated and that an R would be the bare minimum they could expect.

“We have to try and get it to R. Wish us luck. We haven’t gone through the ratings nightmare yet, that’s coming. We have a screening coming up for the MPAA, I can hear them laughing already. ‘You want an R rating?’

“I can hear their evil cackle from here. We’re gonna see, but we’re gonna give them the toughest version that we can give them. That’s what you want from a horror movie, man. Especially one called Evil Dead.”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez, Evil Dead opens in the UK on 12 April 2013.
