Clash of the Titans would have been a good movie if they hadn't gotten all of the mythology wrong

MythMan84 01-26-2004 05:42 PM

it was still a good movie but ya they did kinda mess with it like the kraken is actaully a squid, medusa dont got a tail....etc

i agree w/ u a little on that one sam cuz different versions of the stories show them differently like in one story say medusa may have a tail and in another story she won't. but i get what your saying. just that sometimes they change things in the stories. i hope you understodd what i am trying to get at

Evisceration 01-26-2004 05:50 PM

Didn't they used to make old black and white movies of mythological creatures back in the day?

Or maybe the just made one....I can't remember. I don't even know what it was called.

Freddy Krueger was loosely based off of a mythological creature called an Incubus.

yo have you ever seen a pic of an incubus now that is some crazy shit

Mytho

Congradulations, Avenger!
CENTAURS and SATYRS might be fun.

mictlan 01-26-2004 08:40 PM

I don't have any first-hand knowledge of this... but supposedly there is a Malaysian vampire called a Penaggalan. It's always female, and when it hunts at night its head separates from the body and flies around... dragging the internal organs along with it. Bet it's just beautiful...

I've heard that this Penaggalans are pretty common in Malaysian horror films. Anyone ever seen one of these films?

I've never heard of that. We have a lot of really weird folklord running around in North Carolina. The Devil visits here quite frequently, if you'll believe the legends. Of course, to me, that's about as ridiculous as telling me Elvis still hangs in Vegas. However, it passes the time. Perhaps there IS some negative entity that shows up.....who knows.

Haunted 01-27-2004 04:11 AM

I fucked up... nevermind. The coffee hasn't had time to stimulate my brain.

Avenger, if you could delete this waste of space accidental post that won't go away, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll end up cringing with embarassment everytime I see this. Thank you.

deckard66 01-27-2004 06:45 AM

I only know about mythological creatures from Heroes of Might and Magic.. so thanx video games! lol
hahah but one of my favourite creatures would have to be... hmm.. Unicorns! ahhahaha no prally like umm.. Gorgons or Centaurs! or troglodytes!

buddy 01-27-2004 07:35 AM

banshee might be good for a movie, rural western ireland as a setting.. lots of 'whoooooooing' over the hill there.

also someone should remake the 12 labors of hercules, or was it 10.. with the cgi these days, they might do a badass hydra and river diverting

Dr.Kelvinstein 01-27-2004 10:26 AM

Did I see Goya's Nightmare referenced on the board? WTF?

I mentioned Nordic mythology earlier (Rune Stone, Berserker), but just remembered 13th Warrior. It's a great retelling of Beowulf, and Vladimir Kulich as Beowulf is very cool.

Also....Mirimax solicited Neil Gaiman to do a straight Beowulf script, and he might even direct. Now that would be COOL!!!!!!!

The Lambert Beowulf was cheesy in a good way. I saw a animated Beo on HBO Family that was very cool. The sword he uses to kill Grendel's mother has a hilt in the form of a Thor's hammer pendant. Groovy.

And the Seamus Heanley translation of Beowulf is just flat out beautiful whether it ever makes it to fim or not!!!!

Probably on topic for the main post:

I actually have a series of short-stories i was writing (x-filesy type about cryptozoology) where the focus of each story was a creature from various mythologies that i would "justify" scientifically.

The first story in the series was based on a cross between the "redcap" from english(?) folklore and the OwlMen that were supposedly seen around an old church in southern England.

Others i had plots for:
Kraken
Ahuizotl
Doppleganger
Sea Serpents
Ghouls
Rusalki

All of them had ties to their mythological roots, but were explained intelligently as a part of their ecology, and were all done with a horror bent.

the main charcters were the same in each story, one of the being the brother of this guy. (click me)

fluffho 01-27-2004 01:14 PM

when iwas little, like 7 my babysitter and her daughter (like a grandma and grandaughter, gradaughter being like 30) were watcing some asian horror movie.

the movie was called Aswang. in the houses here we dont see the roof from the inside, we have nice drywall. well the family in this movie was kidna poor, so u can see all the bannisters or beams supporting the roof. so the lady, who si pregnant, is sleeping in bed

so aswang, lwho looks like an old woman, is on top of one of the beams. so she opens her mouth and this long nasty tongue comes out. so u see her put her tongue in her belly, the lady gasps. then it cuts. then the next morning her sister comes in and she screams. her belly is all flat and everything was sucked out

man, i was gonna go to the philipines the next month to visit family and i cried so much. then turned out my family was rich as hell and they have nice dry walled ceilings like here so all was well with the world

Evisceration 01-27-2004 01:17 PM

lol...Ass Wang....

Anyway, that actually sounds like a good movie. I should check it out sometime.

And The Odyssey, although not a horror, still had mythical creatures in it....

Vodstok 01-27-2004 01:17 PM

Wow, that is fucked up... Poor kid...

fluffho 01-27-2004 01:19 PM

haha. yes i slept with the light on until one night i ran into my parents room screaming.

well i dunno where ud find it. only thing i do nkow is there were no captions

thers another asian movie with some nasty vase where some gremlin lives in it but i dunno bout that one

fluffho 01-27-2004 01:24 PM

or how about thsi one? not exactly a mythological creature, but myth none the less.

read it in one of those books that are supposed to be real. well when i got to the killer trees i figured it wasnt, but then again africa has some pretty wild jungles..

anyway this is one that gave me nightmares for quite some time. the same reason why i have no mirrors in my room. actually, for a few years i forgot about this thing. so in therapy (yes therapy) i brought up my fear of mirrors, then i remmeberred this oh my god i started balling. bowling? well that was bad. .. im a pussy

well im not sure how well of a movie u can make but ok here goes.

its in a motel or something. so some guy walks in, and hes like yeh i need a room. so the owner tells him 'we on ly have 1 room left' brings him up. then tells him 'ummm, make sure u only sleep on the right side of the bed'

so hes like 'wtf' but hes like ok whatever

so i guess the bed is on a wall, and on that wall there is a mirror. so he sleeps on the right side.

hes facing the mirror, and for whatever reason wakes up. he sees some dude come in through the door, ((ghost type dude), go to the left side of the bed (the one hes not on) and starts making like a strangling motion. u know, at the pillow, puts his hands down and starts yeh...

so the dudes lke 'wtf' so ok hes like ehh im dreaming.

so i duno i guess his brother comes down. so hes like uhhh ok 'u sleep on the left side'

so blah blah dont remmeber if he looks in the mirror that night

but the next morning his brother is strangled

....? SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME, that was in 9th grade. now i am a sophomore college and it still messed me up. but i think it was the the fact that it had scared me so much that messes me up, and not the story itself. anyways ive told this story twice since (speaking) and i cried both times..... ... i dont nkow why either!

Evisceration 01-27-2004 01:26 PM

Wow, that's freaky as hell.

I kind of have a phobia of mirrors, well only at night. It's hard to explain but whatever.

fluffho 01-27-2004 01:30 PM

i have a hella fear

it was at night and i was in the bathroom dancing and my hand flicked the light switch and i SCREAMED

Do you guys have any favorite mythological creatures? I've always liked the gorgons...Medusa rocks (pun intended)...

Doesn't have too be from Greek mythology...Could be Nordic...Valkyries are cool too...

Actually, ANY mythological creatures that you prefer...:)
