Can anyone reccommend some movie similar to Shrooms. My co-workers all really liked that one and want more suggestions from me. i was thinking something along the lines of Haute Tension, or Requiem for a Dream as they are mind fuck movies but I don't want to be considered a psycho for having seen them if everyone finds them too out there. Help please.

joshaube 06-12-2008 08:38 PM

Inside. It's been talked about.
[REC]. You guys know about it.
The Cottage. If you love Shaun of the Dead, see this NOW.
May. I agree with everything ChrnoGirl said.
Fragile. From the director of "The Darkness." Really touching ghost-story.

I'll also give a shout out to The_Return, who got me to check out these two films way back when I first visited these forums:

Session 9 & Dead End

The Fountain.

Strongly recommended from me for anyone who likes finesse in cinema. I know its not a horror movie, but yet, its a MUST watch for any movie connoisseur.

my buddy who is a very well respected horror film reviewer rated this movie higher than anything he's seen in years.

I am with him. It was my first watch and I was so totally blown away.

It demands a second and third viewing soon. THE best movie I have seen in a longass time.

Better than Aronofsky's other stuff?

Pi + Requiem for a Dream are incredible.

On par with Requiem. A slight notch above Pi.

But then I ve always been very partial and particularly fond of Requiem.

Either way, its a must-see for you, Andrew.

Straying for horror again, but:

11:14

Saw this one awhile back totally at random. My dad brought it home from the store and I'd never heard of it, figured it was worth a shot - wow! It's set up alot like Crash (2004) in the way that it's told, and the subject matter is vaguely similar, but it's chock full of really dark humor, great performances, and some very cool plot devices and twists.

If you can find it, give it a try.

joshaube 06-14-2008 06:56 PM

11:14 is excellent, sir. I think that is another one I watched because of a comment you made a while back. DeepDiscount has it for a mere 5.99, WORTH the buy, totally.

Good suggestion and I second it, liked it far better than Crash actually.

I found that I enjoyed them about equally, but for totally different reasons...

It's amazing that two movies with such a similar plot + method of storytelling can be so drastically different. They'd make a hell of a double feature, IMO.

The French Connection (1971)

William Friedkin's (The Exorcist) crime thriller- Oscar winner of 1971- is a picture that continues to stun me with every revisit. The film is so hard-hitting and balls-to-the-wall its nearly unbearable. Gene Hackman (who won Best Actor) inhabits the character of Popeye Doyle with ferocious angst and aggression and puts on a performance which is utterly believable. Roy Scheider backs this up with a hint of humor, slyly but unforcefully added for a bizarre taste. The result is one of the most intense and believable cop stories to ever grace the silver screen, and Friedkin's tight, documentary-like style continues to entrance in a disturbingly shocking, brutal way.

This, as always, comes highly recommended. Anyone who has never witnessed The French Connection must do so immediately. You won't be sorry.

Ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?

Excellent review of a great film, Alky.

I was just about to put Otis up here. I was expecting a crapfest but got an intelligent and twisted little dark comedy. I really liked it. :)

_____V_____ 06-19-2008 11:21 AM

Its wickedly humorous. :D

Gets a neat little recommendation from me and Despare to everyone in HDC.

missmacabre 06-19-2008 12:33 PM

I'll second the recommendations for the Death Note movies. I also recommend the manga and anime if you can get it with subtitles. Really good, very clever. Don't let your past notions on anime keep you from seeing this movie.

If I could only recommend one movie for the world to watch, this would be it. Please, watch it if you haven't already. It's incredibly well written and the acting is spot on.

A guy that I used to work with always raved about Brick...he kept saying he'd lend it to me, but he got fired before he had the chance, haha. I'll have to pick it up...

What'd he do to get fired?

el espíritu de la colmena (the spirit of the beehive)

highly recommended (for anyone that can handle a slow pace).

very, very good. turned out to be one of my very favorites of last year.

technically, it's an incredibly well-made piece of cinema.
it looks great, features some incredible acting, and truly nothing in it felt expendable or wasteful.

starting about twenty minutes into it, i found myself super tense and anxious until the very end.

however, it is a real fucking downer, but that's only incidental.

definitely give a shot, but make sure you watch it during the day or something, and have something pleasant to go to afterwards, cause it for sure will stick in your head for a while.
