If you're refering to my decision to let the 'ban on sight' go, after one of the other mods questioned my decision to enact it...I would like to respond to that:

1) The mod who decided that I acted in a 'questionable' manner, is FAR from an "idiot"

2) Are you suggesting that we need a ROGUE mod, who does NOT consult with the other mods, or consider the input of the other members of this forum before taking action, and acts SOLELY on his/her own, based on their own perceptions, wants, opinions, likes, dislikes, etcetera?...I have to strongly disagree with that...That's impossible here
As they do...This is the game that we play...Perhaps they just want new screen names...I seriously doubt that creating a new screen name will alter anyone's personality
We tried that last time...We received NO response (I even put it in the moderator's forum)...Horror never even looked at it...The ONLY person who DOES have the power to do anything here that would actually WORK, won't do it/doesn't give a shit

I don't know about the others, but I never sleep, this baby doesn't allow it...And...One of the other moderators (the best we ever had), is having a pretty damned difficult time right now, as his mother became very ill last month and just died last week (Happy Holidays, huh?), so I don't think that he's overly concerned with trying to uphold the illustrious reputation, of this most respectable forum at the moment...Kinda puts things into perspective a little, doesn't it?

I read what we've all said collectively and then what the members said and Rayne's response. Since Horror doesn't really feel like doing dick, then I suppose that the "Ignore" option is the best. I mean, you could think about it like this: What's the worse thing you could do to people like these jokers to them and for them? Give them attention. Therefore, anytime this situation arises, we just use ignore.

If you want to give them a good "shouting at" first go ahead, but then, ignore.

Now, Ive never been a mod here, but Ive moderated smaller forums before. Maybe its different here, but I highly doubt it: Banning someone takes a grand total of 20 seconds (at most) to click a couple buttons. I agree with you Rayne that they'll just keep coming back, but if you start banning them on sight, what harm would it do? It's not like its strenuous or anything, and not hard at all to recognize these jokers when they sign up. Banning on sight keeps them off the forum for awhile, and eventually they'll get bored/discouraged and leave.

With more mods, there would be more chance of a mod being around when a troll makes their new account, so they really could be banned on sight.

Well, that was kinda what I thought, too...But, this isn't exactly a dictatorship...

AND...When they DO come back, they usually come back with a vengeance, creating 10 times MORE shit...If they are ignored, they just get bored and quietly slink away...OR, if they aren't intelligent enough to go away, or they don't have any other life outside of the internet, no one would really care or even KNOW if they were still here or not, if they simply ignore them...Just let them 'talk' to themselves for a while...

When we requested the power to IP ban people 2 years ago (when Horror actually WAS posting in the moderator forum, and communicating with us)...He told us the reason HE didn't feel that IP banning was necessary was:

1) "What if another (innocent) user wants to visit the forum at the home of the IP banned person, and they are restricted because of someone else?"...He said that wasn't fair

2) "Many times IPs are random, and a person gets a different one every time he signs in, and in those cases it wouldn't even work"...I have NO clue what he was talking about there

3) "Everyone deserves another chance"...He truly believed that if someone were banned, they would straighten up so that they wouldn't be banned again:rolleyes:

4) "How bad could it possibly get?", "How much 'damage' could a couple of irritating people really cause?, it's ONLY an internet forum"...This just shows that he doesn't spend any time AT this forum


So yeah, if the other mods (mod) agreed, we could ban them 50 times a day...But, who has that kind of time?...It takes THEM just as much time to create a new screen name, as it takes for us to ban them...I DO like a lot of games, but that one sucks

Basically, many ISP's assign dynamic IP addresses to their customers. So each time someone logs in/resets their connection, they are allocated an IP address from a pool of IP addresses that the ISP administers. So they may get a different one each time they eg reset their ADSL router. So banning them by IP could mean that

a/ they just reset their connection and get a different IP address - 'permanent ban' avoided

b/ if an 'innocent' member of the forum is with the same ISP and picks up a 'banned' IP on dynamic allocation, they will have problems.

subnet ban mask. shit happens.

I'll admit that I have trolled at forums before (and not only the time that you told me to stop:p), and from personal experience after being banned once or twice and having to make new accounts, the fun goes away FAST. Most sites (Pretty sure HDC does this?) need to send a verification email...so everytime you get banned, you need to make a new hotmail account, too. Way more work than its worth. Id say a few bannings would be enough to keep most anyone away, for awhile at least.

Hence why I say we need more mods. Even if they DO keep coming back, mods will be here to stop 'em. Couple extra mods to take the workload off you and Zwoti, ad poof. Pest problems solved.

But hey, like I (and others) have said: the Ignore feature works miracles. Better than nothing:)

If most of us ignored them, or at least stopped responding to their posts, I have a feeling they'd go away. I've never used the ignore function before, but I'm going to give it a try.

I mentioned it before too, but if you just "actually" ignore them, just sort of tune them out, it's possible you'll stop caring, and you'll see their comments here and there but it won't affect you.

It works quite well. I have a few people on ignore.

well, i'm usually not in favor of banning people and generally just take Crabbie's line of ignoring people who are annoying.
