I didn't think it was that great - very verrrrry slow. The ending was ok but though they could have done more with it.

Ichi was a better film from the director.

Audition = 5/10.

Audition

Okay, dont blow the ending for me since the dvd we got through netflix was defective, so i havent seen the last 30 minutes yet, but so far, this movie is great. im not a huge fan of Japanese cinema in general, but i have been very impressed by the acting and character developement so far.

And i do hope that they dont make a remake of this one in american. They should just do a subtitled release a-la crouching tiger, hidden dragon.

ShankS 12-06-2004 10:18 AM

well near the end you see........ :D

yeah agree, its a good film, even non-jap film fans tend to like it :)

I definitley wouldn't wanna blow the ending for you, because to be honest, It's pretty much the only part that I really liked...Of course, you and I have a few 'differences of opinion'... ;)

EXTR3MIST 12-06-2004 10:57 AM

They escape in a helicopter.

Vodstok 12-06-2004 11:26 AM

Let me guess, Hugh jackman thinks he's killed him, but it was really a body double?!?! Am I right?!

slasherman 12-06-2004 11:34 AM

I didnt like this asian movie....I like a lot of them but not this....maybe i missed the ghost ?

EXTR3MIST 12-06-2004 11:37 AM

That's right - confuse him.

fi_wilson 12-06-2004 02:45 PM

I know I'm in the minority on this one but I was really disappointed by this film. Found it boring and the ending an anti-climax.

Well...I'll share that bottom 2% with you...The ONLY part I really liked was the end, and even THAT was...less than stellar...

Vodstok 12-07-2004 04:43 AM

OUT OF MY THREAD, YOU FREAKS!!!

Just kidding. Rayne is right though. if she didnt like it, i probably will ;)

Just tell me you hated Dungeons and Dragons. That made Spawn look good....

tut tut tut....

fi_wilson 12-07-2004 07:26 AM

Wow I'm really surprised to find some fellow peeps in dislike of this film. In my experience almost everybody holds it up as a modrern masterpiece.

slasherman 12-07-2004 07:39 AM

I cant see why..? Its not spooky, exciting or well written....The plot (or did it have a plot ?) didnt make any sence...

EXTR3MIST 12-07-2004 08:29 AM

Fuck it, I just like the bit where she sticks needles in his eyes and cheese-wires his feet off.

Then they escape in the helicopter.

Vodstok really shouldn't still be consulting this thread.

Vodstok 12-08-2004 04:10 AM

Dont worry, i wasnt :)
\

I was surprised with the ending. The brutality lasted a little shorter than i expected, but so far, this is my favorite japanese horror flick.

Anyone else think it sounded like she was saying "Kitty, kitty kitty" while she was sticking in the needles?

And, i laughed my sick fucking ass off when she cut his foot off. She tossed it aside like "and...its...off! IOkay, enough of that. " *toss*

Apparently she was actually saying "kiri, kiri, kiri" which is the sound a drill makes in Japanese. Or so I've read.

Sam

EXTR3MIST 12-12-2004 09:34 AM

You mean they don't just go, "DRRRRRRRRRRRR" in the land of the rising sun?

Those crazy ass Japs, man.

SamCostello 12-12-2004 09:40 AM

Well, yeah, they do. :-) It's just that when you render the sound in the language, it's "kiri."

Just like in English dogs say "ruff" (or whatever) and in French they say "Aaow." Same thing.

Sam

EXTR3MIST 12-12-2004 10:06 AM

And French cats?

They don't go, "Aaow" but "Squeak!"?

This surely leaves the mice to go, "ruff" and we come full circle.

Imagine the French version of Tom & Jerry.

SamCostello 12-12-2004 10:29 AM

In French, cats actually say "mew" I think, but yeah...

Sam

EXTR3MIST 12-12-2004 10:39 AM

According to Phil from the pub, people arriving in the UK from Indonesia are offended to hear our dogs bark "woof... woof!" as apparently this means "I make bum love with your sister" in Bahasa.

Kinda conversely, dogs in Indonesia go about saying "wank... wank!".

SamCostello 12-12-2004 10:41 AM

Heh. Nice one.

Er no, they actually say "Miaou"... And dogs say "Wouaf"... Don't hold it against me.

Oh, we're talking about Audition ?? Hmmm. About halfway through, it seemed like a totally different movie made by a totally different person. I liked it, though, except I found it wayyy too looooong.

Vodstok 12-13-2004 05:55 AM

Actually, in france, cats sound like Eva Gabor.

Dont you people pay attention? It was in Aristocats.....

Seriously, though. The subtitles said "Deeper, Deeper", so i assume they are at least partially right.

Everybody wants to be a cat,
because a cat's the only cat
who knows where it's at.
Everybody's pickin' up on that feline beat,
'cause everything else is obsolete.
Now a square with a horn,
can make you wish you weren't born,
ever'time he plays;
and with a square in the act,
he can set music back
to the caveman days.
I've heard some corny birds who tried to sing,
but a cat's the only cat
who knows how to swing.
Who wants to dig
a long-haired gig
or stuff like that?
When everybody wants to be a cat.
A square with that horn,
makes you wish you weren't born,
ever'time he plays;
and with a square in the act,
he's gonna set this music back
to the Stone Age days.
Everybody wants to be a cat,
because a cat's the only cat
who knows where it's at;
while playin' jazz you always has a Welcome mat,
'cause everybody digs a swingin' cat.
Everybody digs a swingin' cat.

I think the only reason the end sticks in peoples mind is the fact that it is so sudden and unexpected - a departure from the rest of the mundane movies moments.
Overall rating: OK - 5/10

jenna26 04-26-2005 09:55 PM

I liked this movie a lot because of the slow build-up. The last few minutes were intense in my opinion. And I thought they did a good job of developing the characters along the way and building a kind of subtle suspense. A good film, if not a great one and it stuck with me.

kung-fu-jesus 04-28-2005 01:15 PM

i personaly liked it, it was a nice change. most all jap horror films are supernatrual( or atleast most of the ones ive sceen) and i fucking hate films that are all about the supernatrual. i live my killers living or the living dead, either way solid, violent, and not some fucking tortured soul.

i fucking hated the grudge and the ring. im more into the vamp, zombie, and slasher flicks of the genera. as long as its not all supernatrual its ok.

i take back what i said about haiting all supernatrual films. i sorta liked darkness falls( mabey just because the made the tooth fairy out to be something more that just a bitch in a to-to), and i also kinda liked darkness.

basicly i dont like it if the ghost just bitches and moans through the whole film, or when jap films that i didnt like that much gat riped off and made even worse.

Audition

I just recently saw, this movie, and I personally thought it was too slow. Although I loved the last 15mins of it! I like how you never really saw much, you just heard the poor bastard in agony.

Just goes to show you, that when a girl is hot, you better watch your back.

Shes definetly hot. But i could never really follow this movie. Maybe if it had a cheesey English Audio option i could handle it. But its hard for me to read basically an entire novel while watching a movie

I doubt if there's a horror fan alive that has seen Takashi Miike's audition and didn't love the last fiveteen minutes of the movie. It is just so sudden and unexpected that this hot and seemingly gentle woman is a psycho.
Check out his other movies.

Vodstok 05-19-2005 04:04 AM

The best part is that she is such a little girl about the whole thing... And she victimizes a very nice guy, not some creepy asshole.

I just rented Gozu. I didn't finish it though, I was tired. But the part with the dog at the beginning was pretty fucked up. It's a little slow though. But I'm hoping it will be worth the payoff, just like Audition.

IDrinkYourBlood 05-19-2005 10:26 AM

I didnt think the movie was slow at all, It kept me in at all times. The auditions themselves were pretty funny. I give it a 4 out of 5.

just saw this for the first time yesterday. extremely boring for the first hour or so, but i cant say i really understood the ending at all. any explanation for the ending? was the dude with no tounge, 2 fingers and no feet real or part if his imagination?

I appreciate Japanese horror films, and I especially liked the originals of "The Ring" and "The Grudge."

But "Audition" has to be the most disturbing Japanese film I've seen. A beautiful young woman who loves to torture the men she lures to her apartment.

I had trouble watching some scenes, they just "hurt" too bad.

I don't know many people who've seen this one though. A twisted friend of mine happened to have it and forced me to sit through it.

You needed to be forced to watch it? If there was a flabbergasted smiley i would clickin' on that bad boy! ;)
