The first was the best...
...as is usually the case.
I think Wes Craven came up with a very interesting and original idea for a horror monster, but it's also rather obvious that he didn't originally intend to make any sequels.
Every sequel was nothing more than a shlepped-together rehashing of the same story, released more to take advantage of the moneymaking potential of the original idea than to actually add anything fresh to the horror genre. The story lines were becoming so comical by the second sequel that it wasn't really horror anymore, it was more like shock-comedy, with Fred rolling off a bunch of inane one-liners instead of trying to be truly horrifying.
The original will always be a classic because of it's originality, but all the sequels were so UN-original that they will only be remembered by diehard fans of the series, and few will share their enthusiasm.
