I strongly believe that a shotgun is the best all-around zombie defeating weapon. It's easy to use, and has enough power to take down the undead in one shot.

But if I had to go with what was actually in my house right now--I'd go with a baseball bat. It extends your reach and enables you to bash your opponent with little effort.

the two butcher knives under my pillow.

Nope. accuracy with a shotgun- absent ammo- low capacity noise level- way high. shotgun is the best on the big screen.

Katana. It's lengthy, light, durable, not easily broken, sharp as hell, swift, and perfectly cliche.

You still have to get too close. A good defense is the best offense...
Unless you have a $12,000 katana it will get dull pretty quickly after a few passes through flesh and bone.

Not as quick as you think. Ours hasn't gotten dull, and we've hacked the hell out of trees and shit for fun with it for years.

They may not be as dull as hell but it takes considerable sharpness to lop off a head and it wouldn't stay that sharp for long. We are of course talking about killing something that doesn't exist so you can always make theories. Maybe the flesh would be decayed enough to provide little challenge but the bone won't be rotted.

I've got a very nice, very sharp, chef's knife...

You would have to be dangerously close. If I HAD to be close I'd use a bat.

i think the attic method is the safest from anything. You climb into the attack, pull up the string and trapdoor, and poof, no more zombies.
