As some of you might know, I spent the days around my birthday at my fathers place...nice area, coastal/country Australia. A bit boring this time around due to time and financial restrictions, but hey...All the same, this morning, before a 2 hour train ride back to my town...we went to some sand dunes.
BIG sand dunes that eventually lead to some beautiful, like multi-mile long, clear water beaches...which was great. We rode in his 4wd, across the dunes, to the beach. I got in the water a little, but whaty we were there for was essentially one thing.
To "sand surf"...I dunno what else you'd really call it. Stand or sit on a modified surfboard with "reigns", and get dragged along by a long connected rope behind the 4wd along the sand, and the incoming tide. Pretty fun. You glide across the shallow water and tear through the sand. On my first go, I stood up. I've surfed before, so I figure, what the fuck...
It's going great...I notice the board isn't waxed, but figure since I've got the "reigns", it's all good, it wasn't much like surfing at all. We got up to about 40KPH (look it up) The second time it went over the water and back out onto the sand, the top of the board was rather wet...due to a number of factors, when the 4wd made a slight turn onto the sand, I started slipping.
So, I figure I'm gonna fall, one way or another...and figure that if I let go of the reign things, and start running foward really fast, I'll be ok. Turns out that doesn't work, at least not on wet sand. I let go, plant my feet on the ground towards the side of the board, one step, two.....maybe even 3 or 4, and then the trip...all I can think of is how funny it must've been looking at this. For me, can't say I was scared, but I was thinking this is pretty much gonna hurt, in the split second before I made contact. I trip foward, tumble some, and the first part of me to make solid contact with the sand (that I felt anyway) was the left hand side of my face, and neck.
Apparently it looked like I'd broken my neck, but I guess I'm more resiliant than that...my main bother at the time was that I got sand in my mouth and eyes...yuck...So, that's where a chain of events in themselves occured, from the moment of that trip.
*Fell, and felt slightly humiliated
*Ripped a hole in the crotch, yes the crotch of my BRAND new long shorts, which I'd bought specifically for this trip....while not wearing underwear...all I can say is that I'm glad I was wearing a very long, oversized t-shirt.
*Got sunburnt...for a REALLY white guy like me, this is really not fun, also sand scraped my left arm and leg during the accident, and my face a little.
*I had mosquito bites, the sand and salt water seemed to like, super-activate the itch factor...VERY itchy now, even after showering before I left.
*Two hour train trip home to my town...putting up with this shit the whole while...also putting up with the fact that some bratty fucking LOUD kids where around that not even the full volume of my discman could block out.
*During the train trip, as I'm reaching for a cd, something around my chest (inner left hand side, edge of the rib-cage) doesn't feel right, like pulling a stitch, real close, or ON the bone...I felt around a little, and at a basic assessment at how I felt, and that I felt something kind of "move", I'd say that the abovementioned injuries weren't all I sustained, but I think I've also broken my rib....not badly, only about an inch of one of them seems affected by this, but...yeah, didn't make the day any better.
*To top this all off, there was a goddamned fly in the train, and seemed to keep landing in my hair. I FUCKING HATE FLIES.
So, I'm kind of tired right now, and gonna crash relatively soon, I just thought I'd pop in and hopefully give you all a laugh, because I'm pretty sure that if I were viewing these events from a perspective other than my own, I'd probably laugh at the unfortunate son of a bitch. The injury doesn't feel too bad, I'll have it checked out tommorow....but yeah, what a fucking day.
