Scary (the only one ever): Session 9

bwind22 09-02-2005 09:28 PM

When I came to this thread, I was under the impression you were talking about sub-genres of horror. Even though that's not the topic at hand, that's what I feel like typing up, so that's all you're gonna get outta me.

Vampire (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire)
Zombie (Night of the Living Dead, Dead Alive)
Hillybilly (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn)
Hauntings (13 Ghosts, The Amityville Horror)
Sci-Fi Horror (Alien, Event Horizon)
Psychological (Silence of the Lambs, In the Mouth of Madness)
Werewolf (Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers)
Slasher (Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street)
Occult/Satanic (The Wicker Man, The Devil's Advocate)
Exploitation (Last House on the Left, Cannibal Holocaust)

I may have missed some. Feel free to add to this...

I wanted to add "Fairytale" (Company of Wolves) and maybe "Satirical" (Dawn of the Dead).

It occurs to me that many movies could fall into several categories, so abbreviations/codes could be formulated for all of these, and movie lists could be made with all the abbreviated category names listed after each title.

I used to shop at a video store that did something similar, and reading their catalog was really interesting, because they would list things as belonging to multiple categories.

It's definately a zombie flick. The fact that the zombies are "just people infected with a rage virus" doesn't change that in my eyes (Or the eyes of Danny Boyle, the director.) Them being infected with rage is what makes them zombies in the first place. They lose their humanity and become bloodthirsty cannibals.

Here's a quote of the films director referring to them as zombies in an interview....

Quote:

iW: We're you inspired by any classic horror films?

Boyle: Alex Garland, who wrote it, is a big genre fan, particularly of zombie movies. He's a real aficionado. I thought, "Well, I'm not going to dwell too much on them, so that'll be a good balance between us." So I tended not to.
