Brutal. 1988.

MichaelMyers 08-01-2017 04:16 AM

1988. What a year to be alive!

hammerfan 08-01-2017 04:45 AM

1979

Repo'd 08-01-2017 07:14 AM

1988 is a terrific year, but 1979 has several movies that are top ten/fifteen picks for me (Phantasm, Alien, Driller Killer, Phantom Der Nacht, Zombie) so it's surprisingly not that tough a choice, in my case.

It's 1979 for me, and I'd be willing to bet that this won't be the last time 79 gets my vote. IF it gets beyond this challenge, that is!

Jake.Ashworth 08-01-2017 09:06 AM

This is always one of the toughest decisions of my day... Damnit, Im at a loss...

79

I literally typed, deleted and typed both dates like five times...

It's not too late to change it again.

Nope, Im definitely 79. When the post has gone through, its final.

Roiffalo 08-01-2017 10:32 AM

Thought for sure you were going to go with 88 for Hellraiser II, Jake. I am shocked.

I would have, but the combined strength of Alien, Amityville, Phantasm and Zombie was just too much.

Gotcha. If I had more horror movies checked off my list my votes would probably be very different too.

You need to diversify. Lol. I spend Friday and Saturday nights watching, every week. I require myself to put down 4 every week. No matter how ridiculously tired I am or how ridiculously low budget the movie.

1979

Tough one. Alien, When A Stranger Calls (the opening 20 mins of may be the best in horror), Salem's Lot, PHANTASM and the initial effect of AMITYVILLE HORROR (Throw in 79's Zombi, Nosferatu, Love At First Bite & Driller)... overall that's more impressive than the 88' gems of BEETLEJUICE, THEY LIVE, Brain Damage, Killer Klowns & Serpent and the Rainbow.

Jake.Ashworth 08-03-2017 06:59 AM

Im rebelling on this one 82.

Repo'd 08-03-2017 08:43 AM

This battle is like watching a great middle weight fighter(1982)take on a heavy weight(1931).
82 lands a few sharp jabs with Tenebre, Basket Case, Slumber Party Massacre and the Cat People remake, then nails it's competitor with a solid right cross of Creepshow and follows that up with a wicked left right combo of The Thing and Poltergeist.

Then the heavy weight shakes it off, stands 1982 up with a huge left hook of Dracula, throws a vicious right uppercut, M, and then obliterates it's opponent with another massive left hook, Frankenstein.

Knockout- 1931 takes the bout over 1982.
82 has some solid titles but 1931's big three is going to be tough to beat as we move along.

Thanks again for this tournament, V, And to all you forum freaks that are participating! This has been phugginn phun.

Sculpt 08-04-2017 05:34 PM

This is a tough one in that my 54 is really only hoisting 'Gojira', 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' and 'THEM!'. But what a marvel the three are.

For 1965, I really like The Last Man on Earth for it's many facets: stark, claustrophobic, intelligent and spiritual. Otherwise 1964's boasts some visually beautiful and striking films, none more than Blood and Black Lace, although otherwise described as stupefying. Onibaba has excellent direction and Kwaidan also boasts terrific sets, though can be can sighingly incomprehensible ("to Westerners" they say), though perhaps just not for everyone. I thought Devil Doll was scary and effective, although it doesn't garner much popular praise.

The Tomb of Ligeia, is notable, but I've just never been a fan... as I find the gothic slowness and melodrama so painfully aimless... neither scary nor sharp, not making any point... there's apparently romance and emotion in there... but I can't access it from the ether. And again, with The Masque of the Red Death... I really don't get it. Using an overused phrase, it is what it is... has some nice visuals, but I didn't find it scary nor stark, and whatever the point was, I didn't enjoy the trip. No accounting for taste sometimes.
