Help please...

Reformatted the pc...I never remember to do one thing, write down what makes the sound work...
So, I'm here, without sound.

How do I determine what I need, and install it?

It could be a problem with your sound card or driver:

This may help: (based upon Win XP)

Left Click on Start, left click Control Panel, left click on Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices. This should tell you your make of sound card.

or alternatively

Go to desktop, Right Click on My Computer. Left Click on Properties. Another screen should appear - Left click on the Hardware box. Another screen should appear - Left click on Device Manager box. A tree structure should appear with various names each with a '+' or '-' next to it.

Look for Sound, video and game controllers. If you Left click on the '+' next to it, another list should appear - (audio) drivers. If there's an exclamation mark next to any, then there is a problem.

It may be a simple case of downloading and installing a new driver.

Try searching for soundcard on google or http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/

Got xp...but still even following your instructions, I am not really getting anywhere.
No sound device is indicated..."No audio device", but, it's always had sound before...I dunno if I got a soundcard specifically or it was onboard or somethin'

Also, it's not picking up my additional HD...
