Darbareye Elly aka About Elly (2009)

http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/.../AboutElly.jpg

A group of 3 married couples (Sepideh-Amir, Shohreh-Peyman, Nazi-Manoochehr), some with children, visits to a seaside town & stays in a seaside villa for a short break. The only single people in the group are Ahmad who has recently separated from his German wife and Elly who is a nursery teacher to Sepideh's child. Sepideh (who brought Elly in the trip) has organized the whole trip, as well as playing matchmaker for Ahmad and Elly.

After the very first night, in next morning Elly wants to go back home because of her worried mother but Sepideh doesn't let her. Sepideh and Shohreh went shopping, men were playing volleyball and little girls were playing at the beach with Elly while the other kid (Arash) was swimming. After a while, the girls came and reported to their fathers that Arash was missing. The film really takes off just at that point when, in an apparent attempt to rescue the 'missing' kid, Arash from drowning, Elly disappears. Was she drowned too or did she just leave...but why would she do that?...whatever actually happened to Elly?

Iran's official submission to 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language category in 2010 (though didn't get the final nomination) is a very nicely crafted suspense-drama that interestingly play with its characters, somewhat in a 12 Angry Men fashion where lies, suspicion & speculation slowly starts to digs off some dark sides of each others very human nature.

The Stone Tape (1972)

Combining aspects of science and superstition was a frequent & fantastic theme in Nigel 'Quatermass' Kneale's works and followed by that, his 1972 BBC Telefilm The Stone Tape concerns a team of scientists who move into their new research facility, a renovated Victorian mansion that has a reputation for being haunted. Especially, one particular big empty room that they wanted to make their computer room turned out spooky! Investigating & sensing something wrong in the place; they gradually learn that the haunting is a recording of a past event stored by the stone in that room. Believing that this may be the key to the development of a new recording medium, they throw all their expertise and high-tech equipment into learning how the stone tape preserves its recording. However, their investigations serve only to unleash a darker, more malevolent force.

Directed by Peter Sasdy (Taste the Blood of Dracula & Hands of the Ripper) with a good cast of actors, this is somewhat a thinking person's horror film, very low on body count with zero gore and not so much concentrated on jump scares but still effectively delivers an intelligent ghost story. Even, since its broadcast on BBC Two as a Christmas ghost story in 1972, the hypothesis of residual haunting - that ghosts are recordings of past events made by the natural environment - has come to be known as the "Stone Tape Theory" by para psychological researchers (Info source: Wikipedia).

But sadly, this critically acclaimed & so much significant gem of magnificent 70s Horror somehow didn't get much attention from the genre fans. Most probably for its plot structure & unavailability of DVD, I guess.

Like a M.R. James story, this fascinating tale of supernatural strangely grows spookier minute by minute, particularly when it comes close to its chilling final revelations.

Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan aka The Ghost Story of Yotsuya (1959)

Considering its time of release, it was surely quite unbelievably creepy & gory for the audience back at that time. Along with great Nakagawa's fantastic style of film making where we can see Bava like continuously changing colorful screens & brilliant use of lights & shadows, this film also comes with some awesomely creepy set pieces, i.e. freaking ghosts rising from the ground or peering down from the ceiling!

Like its more than hundred years old original story (which mainly written as a Kabuki play), the film is mostly filled with typical Asian melodrama where characters grows in the 1st half but 2nd half strikes with violence & ghostly encounters.

Overall, a must see for the fans of Gothic horror & J-Horror.

Although the story has been adapted to film many times in Japan but this is generally considered the finest screen adaptation of the story as well as Nakagawa is considered to have been Japan's first great horror film director. Besides having provided his critically acclaimed Jigoku and this best version of the Yotsuya ghost story, he also directed Kaiden hebi-onna (Ghost Story of a Snake Woman, 1961), Onna kyuketsuki (Lady Vampire, 1959), Kaidan Kasane-ga-fuchi (The Ghost of Kasane,1957) & Borei kaibyo yashiki (Black Cat Mansion, 1958)....Damn! These all movies have now become hard-to-find films in most of the parts of the world & also in the torrent sites. Acclaimed video-distribution companies like Criterion or Blue Underground very much need to release A complete Nakagawa Horror Collection asap, IMO.

Knowing (2009) Smashing and hard hitting supernatural sci-fi thriller starring Nicholas Cage in one of his more likeable roles. I'm no special effects hound but I found what's used in this genuinely jaw dropping. It has a very diverse collection of elements to it so you may not like them all depending on personal view (especially towards the end) but I was completely gripped throughout and I strongly recommend it to anyone who may have avoided it like I did. Great for getting in the mood for the apocalypse!

The Silent House (2010): A Uruguayan horror/ thriller shot in one continuous take. Tense and claustrophobic, really worth checking out.

Posted this in last seen movie thread, but figured I'd post it here too.... Well worth a watch.

The Man from Nowhere: Awesome Korean Action movie. Imagine Tony Scotts Man on Fire being given the Korean action treatment. Everything that Korean cinema does so well is delivered. Its a simple plot and perhaps not as well orchestrated as something like Oldboy but it still has bags of heart. Acting is amazing but subtle while the action scenes are intense and brutal. Pacing is spot on, everything is spot on. Best action film I've seen in the past few years, highely recommend.

I'd say I was comparing it to Man on Fire moreso than Oldboy. The only reason I mentioned Oldboy was to point out that The Man from Nowhere was based around a much simpler premise, but that didnt detract from the heart of the movie.

It's hard to make a recommendation for a Korean action flick without, at some point, mentioning The Vengeance Trilogy...

Safe in Hell (1931)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Just picked this up through Warner Brother's archive series. Despite them fucking up The Devils release, bless them for recovering forgotten films like this one.
This is a remarkable pre-Code gem. Featuring a rugged cast of characters, and an amazing, shining performance by Dorothy Mackaill, Safe in Hell is almost whimsical, but ultimately anchored by brooding and intense undercurrents, and paced with increasing tension. The last act, then, is a heart-breaking gut-punch. Highly recommended.

Clean, Shaven (1993)

http://images.moviepostershop.com/cl...1010381078.jpg

Along with A Woman Under the Influence, this is the best film about mental illness ever made. Spare, haunting visuals react and contrast with claustrophobic, chaotic, and terrifying sound design; more-or-less objective visuals and more-or-less subjective audio give a harrowing and heartbreaking insight to main character Peter Winter, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and is searching for his daughter. An incredible film that gets better with repeat viewings, as the audience is charged with deciphering what is real and what is a product of Peter's fractured mind. Highly, highly recommended.

The Skin I Live In (2011) I was already a fan of Pedro Almodovar (Bad Education, Talk To Her, High Heels, All About My Mother) before I saw this possibly his first horror film so had high expectations-it far exceeded them! This is based on a book (forget the Spanish author at the moment) like a lot of his films and draws inspiration from Frankenstein but this is no reinterpretation of the story it goes in a different direction and Almodovar fans like me can enjoy joining the dots to his previous films. Nevertheless this is a jaw dropping film and you don't have to have seen any of his previous films to get it. This is a film to watch in awe-awe at it's ideology, it's subtle performances (especially Antonio Banderas) and its fluidity. If Insidious and Trollhunter don't count as 2011 films then I choose this as my fave horror or any film of 2011.

127 Hours (2012)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...27_hours-1.jpg

Hands down, one of the most captivating and gut-wrenching movies that I have seen in quite some time. Brilliant direction from Danny Boyle and an incredible acting job from James Franco. The story itself is incredible, but Boyle and Franco breathe life into this tale. It's at times horrifying, lonely, and ultimately hopeful.

Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet.

Me too - To be honest, even after the great reviews, I kept thinking to myself, "Great story but this movie has GOT to be boring..." But it's anything but boring. I couldn't tear my eyes away from it... And the climactic scene is so incredibly intense and cringe-worthy... Definitely some images that I won't be able to get out of my head for a while.

Just posted this in last seen movie thread, figured I'd post it here. Definatley one to check out for those that havent seen it yet. Pretty solid violent drama, I'm sure a fair few of you will have seen it already, but those who havent should check it out.

Tyrannosaur: Gritty drama directed by Paddy Considine. Solid peformances from Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman, telling a story of two people trying to come to terms with their lives. I thought it drifted towards cliche at times and maybe wanted to be more thought provoking than it actual was. That said, it holds itself together and has plenty of impact. It's not a movie that is gonna appeal to everyone due to the violent and miserable nature, but its a solid movie that survives on some fine acting and plenty of well delivered scenes. 7/10 type of movie that genre fans are gonna enjoy.

Chronicle (2012)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../chronicle.jpg

I really, really liked this movie. I did. I liked the concept of taking the super hero origin and putting it in the hands of teenagers who just want to use it to mess around. You have some well fleshed-out characters, and some really solid acting, especially from Dane DeHaan who plays the troubled, unhinged, and eventually genuinely creepy Andrew. The movie creates a realistic bond between these three boys who are exploring the powers mysteriously stowed upon them from an unearthly discovery... There's the conflict of Good vs. Evil, especially when it comes to the freedom to do almost everything... I loved the acting and the direction (though, again, as I've said before I'm a HUGE sucker for found footage films)... I also think it's highly original; it's NOT a super hero movie... It's NOT a super villain movie... It's NOT a teen drama... It's NOT an action film... yet it takes bits and pieces of each to create a truly unique character piece that I think that many people on here will enjoy.

Highly recommended.

The Whisperer In Darkness (2011) finally saw this long awaited HP Lovecraft Historical Society film. As with The Call Of Cthulhu (2005) this is another labour of pure love that instead of making into a silent movie they have aimed for black and white 50s sci fi horror. This is an outstanding piece of work all shadowy cloak and dagger intrigue, secret alien invasion plot, surprising contemporary dialogue and plenty of mythos to sink your teeth into. I actually can't wait to watch this again as I know there are things I may have missed such is the intricacy of it's delivery with at times a glorious atmosphere of dread without any concessions to the mainstream at all. Though having said that this may be a great film to get a new audience interested in all things Lovecraft. I truly hope it succeeds.

The Mutilator (1985) I saw this years ago in the horror section in HMV as part of Vipco's Banned films series. Thankfully I didn't buy it as Vipco were notorious for releasing savagely cut versions of films. So after forgetting about it for years then I saw elvischrist mention it as an awesome film last year I decided to finally track down a full uncut version (you can't believe some UK releases that claim to be "uncut" as they are not always truly uncut) anyway this definitely was and what an absolute blast I had watching this. It is an 80s slasher film so essential viewing for any 80s slasher fan. But what makes this stand out from the crowd is it's genuinely spooky low budget atmosphere. Granted the acting may make you hate the characters but the death scenes are so violent and OTT it's hard not to give it a round of applause at it's unique style. An adorable and addictive film I will treasure :)

Dark City (director's Cut) (1998)

Outstanding thought provoking sci fi-thriller (with some horror and film-noir elements thrown into the mix) with familiar faces Kiefer Sutherland, Melissa George and Richard O Brien. This manages a rare thing in that by the end you are not left scratching your head despite some of it's mysteries remaining in the ether. There are some very jaw dropping special effects, an intense brooding atmosphere, tons of gripping suspense and handles the mind-expanding concepts beautifully. A Rare gem and higly recommended.

The Cabin In The Woods (2012)
This is made out of pure unadulterated love of horror, there are so many references to other horror films it's impossible to count. But despite this this still manages to impress and stand alone as a great movie in its own right. There's plenty of CGI enhanced (like in The Midnight Meat Train and Adam Chaplin) gore to satisfy hounds like me but there is also a multi-layered mystery to give it some substance. In a way this film defines the genre whilst offering it up as fresh and genuinely exciting. A much needed shot in the arm for those who feel slightly jaded as this cleverly turns any approaching cynicism completely on its head. Manages to be both graphic and subtle which really is quite an accomplishment as it is backed by some thrillingly suspenseful scenes. Can not recommend this enough :)

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps774f49cd.jpg

Uhm. Ok. Wow.

I was really trying NOT to keep my hopes up for this one because I was worried that I'd be disappointed... But to be honest, this is truly one of those rare movies that remind me of what I absolutely love horror, gives me hope for modern horror movies, and just satisfies me as a fan. Simply stated, it's a horror movie lover's horror movie.

I love the nod to pretty much every movie trope ever (though my boyfriend kept pointing out the very obvious and prolific Raimi nods which drove me nuts but that's OK)...

I have a slight qualm over the ending, probably just because the scenes leading up to the end were so ridiculously AWESOME, GORY, SCARY, and esoteric, I didn't want it to end... And also I think this is one of those movies that's almost too clever for it's own good, meaning the story is so odd, unique, and dark that no ending would be satisfying.

HOWEVER...

[SPOILERS]

I was just pontificating over how incredibly neat it would be if they released an extended Blu-Ray edition that had 4 alternative versions, based on what they were about the "choose" in the basement (the conch, the Pandora's ball, the necklace, the movie reel, the musicbox) - Would there be any difference in the ending based on there choice? I think it would be a neat way to extend this concept of modern sacrifice having to be based on the victim's will - If their will is different, does the world end? o.O The geek in me wants to find out.

Oh. OH. And I cheered out loud when Sigourney Weaver stepped in the final scenes... GEEKGASM!!!!!!!

I ALSO totally and absolutely geeked out to the nod to Portal - I mean... As a horror-loving console player, I've pretty much just wet myself with excitement over that.

[/SPOILERS]

Ridiculously good. Also one of those RARE self-conscious movies that isn't annoying and pretentious. It was very fun, very well-directed, and acted, and thoroughly enjoyable.

HIGHLY recommended.

4.5/5.

The Stone Tape (1972) Thanks to Roshiq for the rec.

This is the kind of thing you need to go into without knowing anything about it as it relies a lot on mystery and suspense building up to a quite spectacular finale. The acting and production is very 1970s British TV as are the social attitudes of the characters. But what makes this stand out from the crowd is that it is actually very scary, very effective at building up tension and a cumulation of horror rather than jump scares, plus is very profound and thought provoking. The sort of thing that will keep you pondering it for days afterwards. There's some truly fascinating concepts explored here and are delivered in a very down to earth non-patronizing way. I want to watch it again already as I'm sure a second viewing will enhance my enjoyment. Highly recommended but don't expect voilence and gore this one's all about fear factor :)

The Vipco release is legit but cut. Pretty sure the Dragon disc is a bootleg with a tidied up version of the uncut VHS tape. I read awhile back Code Red was working with the director to bring out a decent release of it. Bummed I slept on getting their version of Nightmare that disc is pretty expensive now on eBay etc.
