Just watched Tobe Hooper's "The Damned Thing"

great, creepy opening
sloppy character work
nice mystery
excellent gore factor
overall sense of dread
very strange (disappointing?) resolution
excellent ending
Ted Raimi:)

a solid addition to the series

The only one I saw from last season was "Incident on and off a Mountain Road." I thought it was very weak. I read several reviews from the other episodes and decided that the series probably wasn't worth viewing. I may rent some of the DVDs at some point, but I'm not expecting much.

At the very least you have to rent (buy) John Carpenter's episode. IMO it ranks among his best work.

Okay, I'll check it out. What is it called?

Cigarette Burns

You can get it packaged on the same disc with Stuart Gordon's "Dreams in the Witch House"...not quite as good as Cigarette Burns, but still a great episode.

Being Canadian, it premieres here in one hour on SCREAM. Planning on watching it, and not loosing an OUNCE of sleep. Time change and all.

I loved the dark, serious tone throughout The Damned Thing (something missing from far too many episodes last year), the lack of any p**s poor acting (see Billy Drago in Imprint, the black cop in Deer Woman, etc.), and the way this one ended. I did dislike the CGI considering I was positive we weren't actually going to get a good look at the Damned Thing. As others have said on various boards, this was only a minor complaint. I'd give this an 8/10, which is as good or better than any rating I gave for an episode all of last season. I just hope this isn't the best episode THIS season. The fun part will be waiting, watching, and seeing...

SLIGHT SPOILERS

Eh... I just watched The Damned Thing last night. During a wind & rain storm at that. One might say it's the perfect setting. For me, the episode wasn't all that great. Throwaway, I wouldn't bother purchusing a DVD copy myself.

The acting was weak in a lot of places, and pieces of the dialogue just stuck out like a sore thumb. The gore was really great, and there was a lot of it. The hammer-to-the-head scene made me cringe a little, mainly the scrapping noises the backside made. No complaints in that department. What really bothered me though was the ending. First, WTF at showing the "monster" formed out of oil. Just completely retarded without even acting as a comedic factor. The whole compus thing at the very end, with a direct cut to credits afterwards also had me WTF???'ing outloud. It didn't click with me. I didn't understand it. I'm assuming it caught up to them, but why the hell did the compus freak out? I dunno. I'm not even a fan of this type of "break-down" horror in the first place (or movies where the monster is shown when they don't have the budget to do it properly), so perhaps those who are might like it better. I can't see anyone liking the ending though. Serious throughout, and then WHAM. Something just idiotic pops up, literally, from the ground.

6/10 for me. Average.
The preview for next week looks a LOT better.
Fun, comedic, grimm & gross, T&A-filled with a good cast.
Here's hoping for a better installment.
